Title: Noobie here and am trying to convert from YaBB 2.1 / 2.4 to smf.
Post by: mrnuke on January 10, 2011, 02:39:20 PM
Ok, I tried to read through the manuals and post about the conversion but it doesn't seem to work for me.

I have a few forums I want to transfer to a new host who offers SMF.

I installed SMF at the new host but can not figure out how to convert my existing forums to the SMF.
Do I have to have SMF installed and configured at the old host where the YaBB forum is active?

I tried to copy the full YaBB forum to the new host where SMF is installed and working and then run the conversion script,
but it does not transfer anything at all and errors out.

Hi, mrnuke and welcome to the forum!

I believe that the converter archive has a readme, with full instructions.

EDIT: I just checked and it hasn't, oddly enough.

I'll do some resarch and post back.

On the download page:

QuoteThe following files are converters from other forum software to SMF  To use these converters simply upload the contents of the archive to your SMF directory and execute convert.php.

From that, I'd assume that you DON'T install SMF, first.

Thanks, but does that mean I have to install SMF on the old host where the YaBB forums currently are working? Then run the SMF converter?

I don't think so.

Just upload the files to where your YaBB install is, then run convert.php.

Thanks K@,

To run the SMF converter , SMF has to be located on that server also, so that means the SMF has to be installed on the server that YaBB is currently running on.  Problem is that the old host doesn't have an installation of SMF available on there. Hence the reason I am moving everything to the new host. This might be just too much hassle than it's worth.  :o

Thanks for the link TE, I would have never thought of trying to read the instructions myself.... really..  ::)
