This will be fixed as soon as possible. When you get the message, it truelly is under high stress. Working on reducing stress at the moment.

You have to just INCREASE the cross-sectional area or REDUCE the force in that particular direction. ;) That should decrease the tensile stress.. ;D

SleePy and his team are doing a lot of work, under the hood, at the moment.

These glitches are to be expected, unfortunately.

It's bloody frustrating, I'll agree.

But, in the end, we should be better than we've ever been. :)

2- why do we need new servers?  The ones we have are actually very good.
3- Idjit spammers and DDOS affect even good servers

There is no mail in the queue.  So it has all been sent out.
You may want to check your spam folder to see if mail has gone there.

Kinda noob question, is this software server enchanted or smf enchanted ?
if SMF enchanted will we see it in core ? (Gold or RC5)

It would be nice if some of you guys that have experienced alot of trouble with this give some feedback on how the servers have been behaving for you the past days :) Has it improved? Do you no longer get those errors or at least on far fewer occasions than before? :)

It should have improved drastically.

Please let me know.
Thank you.

it is a bit better with the server load messages not coming up, but the load time on some pages is taking a bit longer then I would expect.

Page created in 9.648 seconds with 14 queries.
Page created in 4.681 seconds with 18 queries.

I dont dare to claim the server is stressless yet. Afterall, it still remains under attack. Ran a test earlyer by shutting down one of a couple defenses, the CPU load spiked instantly to a sick level. Just shows how much they are trying ;)
But, it's on the road to being properly stable again, just needs some extra tweaking :)

Just made more modifications, hope it will show even less errors :)

Thank you for all the input, it helps alot to analyze the situation!! :)

Really? o0
All the time or like a few times in a row at a certain time? (If at certain time, do you have a time for me by any chance?)
If it is constantly, that would be really weird. There are some spikes but nothing it should get a heart attack over.

Please do let me know if, after you received errors, it improved. Judging by the current status of the servers, all is well and it should be running OK without issues. Although I do see a small spike approximately 10 minutes ago, which may have lead to a stress notice.

Note that we have 2 servers. At the bottom of the page, under the build time, you can see which server is used to serve the page.
Currently, this will be only .134 or .135. The server .134 is showing the most issues.

It's probably got fark all to do with your host.

It could be loads of things.

Which servers you get routed through, how much traffic there is, that kinda thing.

Yoshi...

If you ever notice your connection's particularly slow, sometime, just open a CLI (DOS window) and enter "ipconfig /flushdns" followed by "ipconfig /renew".

Sometimes, that can make an amazing difference. ;)

K@, that has nothing to do with the "page created in". From the first couple of lines of PHP in index.php until it gets sent to the output buffer is what that is tracking. Most of the time is spent with the database, and a lot for parsebbc(), there are some other functions that are called a lot which can also make a big difference.

In most cases, the biggest difference can be achieved by tuning MySQL and turning off SMF features which you don't need.

Not the time at the bottom - Page created in 0.07 seconds with 15 queries. - that's the physical time to create the page itself in PHP and send it back out the door.

I have been getting them repeatedly for about the last hour. It took me over 30 minutes to get logged in. Each time I attempted, I got the "Server is under stress.." message. If you have User Account Control enabled, you may still run in to issues on Vista and W7 :P Even as Administrator account :)

Keep in mind that clearing your dns cache will not always result in a solved problem.
It simply depends on which server you will visit when it tries to determine which IP to use :)

Trying to trip them up is really the only way we can work at this. It isn't just this forum, others are starting to get targeted as well. So, hopefully we'll see if any commonalities occur and we can use that. Then the bot owner will just change their bot and we'll start all over again.

Title: Re: High Stress?
Post by: LiroyvH on February 20, 2011, 12:21:34 PM
If it would be that easy and would actually be a solution; it would have been done.
Returning the attack is really the most... Well, stupid (cant find a better word :P) thing to do. There is absolutely no point, a waste of bandwidth and it is illegal. "But what they are doing is illegal aswell" is unfortunatly not a valid argument. Besides, running a single attack will also cause CPU load and traffic load. And I do not own a botnet to do an actual DDoS rather than DoS.

Various of reports have already been sent out to abuse teams. The problem with this is always: shut one down, get many in return.

Title: Re: High Stress?
Post by: LiroyvH on February 23, 2011, 06:40:42 PM
I know :D

Ok folks, another security measure has been set in place to see if it will limit the attack even further. However, the reason I only set it up in there now and not immediately is because I have my concerns about how it functions towards normal visitors such as yourself :) With the settings I put in there it *should* not cause issues, and my tests turn out it wont, but as always on heavily visited websites: you can never be 100% sure if it works towards all the users ;) My tests say they do, practice will sometimes turn out different. This far: all seems to be going well as expected.

So if anyone experiences on several occasions that your connection is actually refused (so you get a connection error instead of the "High Stress" error) rather than getting an error page from our server: please let me know immediately so I may investigate if that was due to these new settings :)

If I am right, and I shamelessly do believe I am, nobody will notice this new security setting except for the attackers. Please do report it though if it becomes agressive to you :)

Reports on the stress errors are still more than welcome as well! :)
Do you still experience them? Do you experience them even less than before? :) Or, which is ofcourse something I can never rule out, did it turn worse for you?

Thanks in advance for your reports. They are very helpfull as thelp help me actively see when something goes wrong: where it goes wrong :)
Thanks!

- Liroy

I'm gonna have to give up, for now.

I tried pinging the site and it totally times-out.

So, it's looking like there's some serious sever outage, somewhere, rather than it being a problem with the site.

You will keep switching between .134 and .135, which is normal :)
It attempts to distribute the load.

The reason why most people only get high stress errors on .134 is because that server is getting most of the crappy requests. That's due to the setup. Because of that, it will also stress quicker as it has to handle more. I dont think .135 has showed high stress errors for months now.

I did notice .134 has showed some issues today, the most recent 5 minutes ago :P, and i'm busy analyzing it to see which of the new settings needs a bit more tweaking to prevent issues.

I will check both your IP's to see if anything happened, thanks for reporting :)
Could you please tell me:
- What time it was at?
- Did it happen immedieately the first time you tried to get on or where you able to browse the site just before it happened?

Thanks.

On a sidenote, one of our webservers, the .134 one, is having some issues at the moment.
Working on resolving them.

Mine was around 12:00 GMT. (A few mins before I posted the message.)

It would be stuck on "loading..." via FF for minutes... I was accessing it via the uni comp.. so my IP would have been diff at that time. I accessed it for the first time when this happened.

Hi kat,

I scanned your IP and there have not been any blocks or limitations for you.
Next to that the servers have not been down in such a way that you could totally not reach them. All that could have happened is the high stress error, but not a total failure when trying to reach the systems.

I'm afraid it was a local issue at your side :(
Title: Re: High Stress?
Post by: kat on February 28, 2011, 02:13:47 PM
Four different browsers, three different computers, one of which was in the local pub.

Weirdness.
Title: Re: High Stress?
Post by: LiroyvH on February 28, 2011, 03:05:09 PM
Really no idea. If it didnt work at the pub either: it can most certainly not be the server that has blocked you. However, as it didnt work on all those places, maybe they use the same provider and they had issues?

If nobody was able to reach SMF, I think we would have noticed far more complaints o0
That and I do not see anything that would indicate a interruption in the service. Weirdness indeed.

No, we have very good servers. The traffic we are receiving in the form of attacks is sickening though. When the firewall and modifications made to the systems are shutdown the servers get overloaded in a matter of seconds...
We have plenty of servers and a couple of more powerful servers to host our vmware environment.

We are just changing some software, details will be given out later.

Could be your internet connection. I have not seen real performance issues myself nor has the server reported any major issues that would slow the site down noticeable. Trust me when I say if there would have been such a issue: I would have got a notification immediately. :)

Doesnt matter, the route from your ISP to the network we are in could have caused a issue at the time while it may have been good to others.
Like I said, I have not seen any issues nor has anyone else reported them as you can see in the posts above yours :) I will not rule out the chance there *could* have been something up, but at this moment it strongly looks more like a temporary issue at your side than on our side :)

Hang in there regarding the errors. I can make more changes to the system but I dont feel comfortable applying them at this time as they are really agressive measures. Some of the measures I have configured now already made me slightly uncomfortable when starting them up as, in theory, it could affect regular users. The settings currently allow pretty much a normal functioning of the servers for everyone, except for the *bleep*'ers that attack us, and I like to keep it that way.

The servers are stable now most of the time since the modifications have been made and that is the best I can do for now without taking risks of affecting real visitors, our members. I dont think anyone here wants to get banned from our server while not doing anything wrong :P
The several defense measures I have put in place on the servers do their job better than I had hoped for, when I undo them the server dies within a few seconds under the pressure. But: software measures only go to a certain extent and cannot be extended endlessly without affecting the general performance. That in itself would counter what I'm trying to do. If the software that tries to stop the stress errors start causing bigger problems for our users, the desired effect (a stable environment) is set back to null. That's not what I want, and I doubt anyone wants that :P It would be like attacking ourselves. Hence, i'm not going to make the system security even more agressive at this point.  If anyone is wondering: No, the type of attacks we are receiving cannot be properly blocked by the hardware firewall on our switch.

We, and especially SleePy on certain fields, are working very hard on a completely new approach (details will follow later when everything is ready) regarding how our servers function. It should reduce loads and effective attacks a lot without much interference from security measures and extra security software.

So in any case, please hang in there and rest assured we are working on it :)
The stress errors once in a while at this moment cant be completely avoided due to the nature of the attacks we are receiving and how far I'm willing to go with our servers.

Actually, the stress went up when we found a girl for the server. It went fine for the first few weeks when they were like... Getting to know each other very well. However, later it got annoyed with having to explain so much about the technical stuff, constant requests for attention and her desire for lots of chocolate once a month. That and apparently the chain was too long as she managed to get out of the kitchen in to the living room, which caused annoyances and high tension when there was a football match... Overall, it was not much of a success :( We tried though.

Just kidding :P

Serious question, if I may?

At certain times, the ol' place runs like a slug on dope.

Opera hangs. Firefox hangs. IE (Spit!) hangs.

K-Meleon doesn't.

OK, it slows, a bit.

But, it always gets there.

How come?

K-Meleon is a bit less resource intensive than the others... Perhaps if all the regular browsers hang and a lightweight thing does not, one might wonder if you have plenty of resources available in your PC? Enough memory, for example. Also do note that if you have other websites open with flash or java, it may eat quite alot of memory and CPU.

Can't see that making a difference. Would be worth shoving a networking sniffer on it and logging the packets themselves to see what's different.

Apart from my browser, nothing else is open. No other sites open, either.

4 gig of RAM, 60% free.

Virtual memory in use: Zero

Pagefile in use: Zero.

2.8 gig dual-core CPU.

Look in your system tray -- probably something else's eating up stuff.

This thread is locked for now.
Please go into the new server setup topic if there are any issues.

The high stress errors should, and probably will not, occur again.

Thank you :)
