Hi there,
Ive been running SMF for years now and ive just upgraded and upgraded.
i have noticed there is now RC2.0 or whatever, whats the major differences ? and is it worth upgrading to it ?
located : http://www.fast-n-modded.co.uk/forum/index.php?action=forum
i currently cant upgrade as i get error 403, which i know is permissions, so i need to adjust that, but im wondering can i just upgrade to RC20.0 or whatever, what will it give me extra ?
i wanted to add the facebook like mod to my forum, but i know thats rc .20 and above.
Any help in simple non jargon would be awesome !
Thanks
Rich
If you're using SMF 1.1.X there are going to be thousands of changes, there are some topics where you can see the new features including WYSIWYG Editor, Tableless theme, enhanced features like a better package manager and a lot of other things. If you upgrading from an RC to RC4 you'll see some changes but not a lot.
Here you can see some of the new features of SMF 2.0:

cool, so you can upgrade from, i think im 1.1.6 to an RC20 package without loosing all members logins, posts etc ?
Sure, all the data can be keeped, you are going to lose all the installed mods, here you can see how to do it:

Hope it helps!
thanks man,
great help indeed..
id loose installed mods but probably open up to lots of new mods tho right ?
happy days ! ;D
somebody on here should do a paid upgrade service for us noobies ! lol
check your mods some/all may have been upgraded already, some may not have been though. there is a paid upgrade service for those without mods it is part of the charter membership. you can also post in the help wanted board and pay someone to upgrade you, with or without mods.

i may take this up.. just as id hate to loose nearly 3000 members details :o
as long as you have a database backup you will not loose anything of value.

Sure, in fact there are a lot cool mods that are only available for SMF 2.0 :)
About upgrade, the best way to go is the charter member subscription, as a charter member you have a lot of benefits:

tried doing a backup recently but it seems to stall half way through, is it as i'm on a mac ?
depends on what method you are using to do the backup
using the admin,
ahh just unticked gzip and i think its going to download ok
please do not use the admin option to do a backup it is known to only do a partial backup, please use your cpanel or phpmyadmin to do a complete backup.
ok, ill have a look now :D
thanks
got it all backed up correctlly, or hope i have.. ive since managed to update to 1.1.12 but ideally i want to jump to rc 2.0 4, the one with a hell of a lot of facebook intergration but theres no help without jargon ! Should it not prompt me to update in admin panel ?
you can not do an upgrade to 2.0 RC4 from the admin panel it is a manual upgrade. Upgrading SMF (http://docs.simplemachines.org/index.php?board=3.0;sort=subject)

theres no help without jargon ! So a link which is full of it is not much help.. i'll soldier on :o
Upgrading is really simple.
Backup your existing database and forum files.
Download the large upgrade package. Unzip the package to your desktop maintaining the folder structure. Copy all the files to your server using your favorite FTP client, overwriting your existing files. Start the upgrade process by adding upgrade.php to your forum URL. That's about it.

Great. Be sure and mark this topic as solved if all is well after you upgrade the main forum.
