Otsikko: Complete nontech noob - godaddy and smf install
Kirjoitti: janeothejungle - helmikuu 12, 2011, 09:34:49 IP
Allright, so bear in mind that I am barely computer literate and please 'speak slowly' and pretend you are talking to a 6th grader when you respond (if you respond?).

Anyway, I found the simple tutorial here for using godaddy (enhanced hosting) and uploading SMF and once the install is complete it should all be wine and roses at my domain, yeah?  Well, I have the domain and the hosting at godaddy, I then installed SMF 1.1.12 and godaddy sent me a notice that it was done and that to launch I just needed to go to my domain.  Anyway, I go there and all I get is one line of text saying 'Welcome to your new site'.  What am I missing??

Please help! Thanks for your time (and patience, oodles of patience)

Cheers,
Kat

First of all, welcome to SMF. A little more details would be very helpful so I can assist you in this process. Did you complete the SMF Installation process of connecting it to your database, and putting all of the settings in place, and so fourth?

Hi, thanks for the welcome. I have not done anything aside from following godaddys tutorial which basically included clicking the app install and ends at smf installed,  'click on your domain url to launch'.  I've been trying to find a tutorial for 'what comes next' so to speak, but nothing is immediately discernible for me.  My server settings say OS/Hosting Type: Linux / 4GH Web Hosting
Hosting Configuration: 2.2
PHP Version: PHP 5.x
Data Center: US Regional

and I have access to something called MySQL which I presume is the database.  What I really need is 'setting up a forum for dummies'.   So my next step is to create the database, yeah? I created one and got shoved into a tool called phpMyAdmin, but now have no idea how to link it to SMF

Thanks again,
Kat

Ahhh. lightbulb.  Just found a tutorial for phpmyadmin (and a mysql for dummies),  but still not exactly clear as to how the database interfaces with a forum as a whole.  ie - do I create one database for the entire forum? and is it then set in stone, or an ongoing process?

Oh how far there is to go......  godaddy should be smacked for advertising 'easy' forum creation....

Have you checked out Installing SMF (http://docs.simplemachines.org/index.php?board=2.0;sort=subject) yet?

If you're getting a "welcome to your new site" page, then there's likely an index.html file there that's generating that content. Login to the file manager in your hosting control panel and delete that file, and it should automatically load SMF for you.

Brilliant. That totally did it.  Now to start figuring out forum modification!

Thanks for all the help!!
