hello SMF! i found more themes that i really want and everything is pointing to 2.0 RC4 or RC5 to be exact...but Ive already seen, i should go straight to RC5. I do not know how to do this at all. Im hosting with GoDaddy, this is my site http://carolinadiesels.com Ive seen where people recommend hosting a local test site...if so how would i do this? would i upload the RC5 locally then migrate all the members/post/threads/etc to the test site, then test before going live??
please give me any and all info on upgrading and any other tips to running RC5
thank you very much!!! Chuck
back to the top, Thanks,Chuck
ok, well...i added IIS, so im kinda stumbling here...i dont know what steps to take. anyone????
Hi, sorry for the slow response.
The best option would be to upgrade right to RC5 as it's the latest release.
See if this helps: Upgrading SMF (http://docs.simplemachines.org/index.php?board=3.0;sort=subject)
If you want to set up a local server, Google xampp. There's thread in the [[b:Tricks and Tips]] board on how to do so. That'll give you something to test with until you're ready to do the actual update.
thanks Kays...heres what im really wanting to do...install the 2.0RC5 on my PC for testing, getting a theme, simple portal, and hopefully Avea Media working on my test site. them import our threads, posts, members etc to the local site for more testing. then if it all looks good...then use the 2.0 instead of 1.1.13. i will read up on the upgrading SMF...but right now, i really want to get this local site to work.
i have windows vista, and i added the internet information services management console. but from there im really confused...how do i access it?i dont know what a certificate/needing one/and what files to name etc...please help....anyone?
also...i looked at Google xampp, but really dont want to install another program if what i have will do the job
Xampp adds an Apache server as well as MySql which is needed. Does IIS have or support MySql? I'm not familiar with it.
Copy your current database and initially set up a 1.1.13 forum. with that database Then do the upgrade. This needs to be done as the database schema has changed quite a bit for 2.0. Once that is done add your themes and then the mods making sure they work on the themes.
When ready save your themes so they can be reinstalled on the live site. Put the live site in maintenance mode and do the upgrade on it. Reinstall your mods and then the themes. Just make sure the mods don't write to your custom themes again.
Needless to say maybe, but before converting your live site do a complete backup again.

hmm, when you say copy and set up for 1.1.13...do i copy everything and all folders on the server? or back up through SMF maintenance ? ive never dont a complete back, not really sure how.
so basically install 1.1.13 on my PC, then import the backed up database? then i can do an upgrade to 2.0?
as for IIS, i dont really know what it comes with or supports. ill check into it-thanks Kays
Hello there.
I belive its better to do backup from phpMyAdmin - Export option, rather than from mainteance section in admin panel.
Then when you get your forum working there, you should do large upgrade for RC5, like its noted in instruction:
Upgrading SMF (http://docs.simplemachines.org/index.php?board=3.0;sort=subject)
Regards.

"phpMyAdmin - Error
Cannot start session without errors, please check errors given in your PHP and/or webserver log file and configure your PHP installation properly."

We cant help you with xampp or similar software usage, but we can help u with smf related questions.
Make shure u have database and all files backups, and just follow instructions in upgrade doc.
Regards.
ok, installed the upgrade...cant find the install.php file to change permissions...HELP
this is what my site says now...."Unknown column 'add_deny' in 'field list'" and its a blank page

but, i changed all the permissions for all of the upgrade files listed...they were 604...now they are 777...should i put them back?
