Thank you very much for the kind words, flapjack!
this is fantastic! big thumbs up!

Again, thanks :) I really appreciate it.
Now there's a useful mod :)

I'm probably going to end up re-writing the ACP end of Email Template Editor as it was built into one function rather than separating them. I'll add in the translations when I find time to make an update. And thanks! :D

Hello, I'm having a bit a problem with Email Template Editor. I want to move my forum to other host but I can't find where edited templates with Email Template Editor is. Could you tell me please?
Title: Re: Email Template Editor

Email Template Editor stores custom templates in a database table, switching hosts will not affect this mod as long as you transfer the database and files.

It can modify any SMF Email as long as the email is inside EmailTemplates.english.php.

Title: Re: Email Template Editor
Post by: Joker™ on April 07, 2011, 11:14:48 AM
Just a suggestion, you should move css edits into css files, most probably index.css.
Title: Re: Email Template Editor
Post by: Matthew K. on April 07, 2011, 11:24:28 AM
If I did decide to move CSS into an external file, it would be my OWN file. If I had one class, it would be different. But there's no point in adding another edit (to index.css) when I could just include my own file. EmailTemplateEditor.css
Title: Re: Email Template Editor
Post by: Joker™ on April 07, 2011, 11:32:28 AM
Yup that would also do the needful.
Title: Re: Email Template Editor
Post by: Matthew K. on April 07, 2011, 11:35:44 AM
Although in this case I don't see much of a benefit to moving my CSS to it's own file. It'd still be returned in $context['html_headers'].

Hi,

Excellent mod by the way, i was looking to customize the mod further by using BBCode links etc.. is this possible anyway as i can't seem to get it to work. the main one i would like to use is

Please activate your account by clicking here (http://{ACTIVATIONLINK})

Also is there a list of all the commands anywhere?

thx,
Title: Re: Email Template Editor
Post by: Matthew K. on May 16, 2011, 05:10:56 PM
Thank you very much :)

I considered adding the support for basic HTML/BBC although just wanted to get it released after a lot of work, I'll reconsider this for the update when 2.0 goes final, basic HTML is possible for emails.

Also, I do believe I added the list of preset variables (as I call them) in a helptext somewhere...
Title: Re: Email Template Editor
Post by: Yourmum90 on May 16, 2011, 05:24:50 PM
appologies, i have found a list on the left side when editing the email that has forumname, scripturl, themeurl and a couple more but i can't seem to find a readme file that has a list of all of them. The only reason i ask is that the username is not in the list on the left but is used in the default text.

Sorry for stupid question,
Title: Re: Email Template Editor
Post by: Matthew K. on May 16, 2011, 05:32:55 PM
Not a stupid question, so no problem.

It's possible I left one out from the left, I'll look into it for the update as well.
Title: Re: Email Template Editor
Post by: Yourmum90 on May 16, 2011, 05:43:54 PM
I also noticed {realname} are these tags already predifined in SMF and that your taping into them allowing us to edit them, or have your created all the tags yoourself? it could be that if some of them are built into SMF i am asking in the wrong area?
Title: Re: Email Template Editor
Post by: Matthew K. on May 16, 2011, 06:36:57 PM
I made all of the ones listed on the left, although SMF has some extended for certain templates, which if used out of scope will not display anything but the raw {var}.

A possible feature I was considering adding would be custom "presets" which would allow you to add your own, although for the time involved, I didn't think it'd be worth it.

Hi,

Thanks for the advice, i have checked the permissions and all seem ok, i am also able to use other mods and use the forum without issues. I have contacted my host and awaiting a reply, are there particular permissions that are required for the mod to go through. A long shot just not to sure what else to check as it worked ok on another fourm with the same host.

It should be compatible with SMF 2.0 using Version Emulate, either way, I'll be providing an official update shortly. It's on my to-do list.

Hello,

Really like this MOD...I did the Emulate thing and it works on 2.0, then I reverted back to 2.0 and it still works. It would be Nice to have a 2.0 version made.

Is it possible to have the Test Button send out Test emails with the Normal Varibles and not the Test once instead?
Title: Re: Email Template Editor
Post by: Matthew K. on July 08, 2011, 10:09:09 PM
Eventually, I will release a version of Email Template Editor for SMF 2.0, although I am working on much more important things; especially since it works with emulate anyways.

Regarding the variables that can be sent in test emails, as I explained in the help text (I think?) the only variables that can be passed using the Test Email Template are the GLOBAL variables, all other variables are not global, and would have to be honed to a specific file, this would cause many more edits required for the mod, and then would still not fully allow all variables to be used, this is the way it will always be, unfortunately, and I apologize for the inconvenience.

Best Regards,
Labradoodle-360

As a workaround we're using the warning system for that purpose (with 0 warning points for a non-warning). Not ideal, but it does the trick.
Title: Re: Email Template Editor
Post by: treehugger on August 08, 2011, 01:43:56 PM
Am tidying my Admin.php file by manually adding mod changes to it and I need to make the following change:

Code: [Select]
Find: [Select]
'profile' => array($txt['custom_profile_shorttitle'], 'enabled' => in_array('cp', $context['admin_features'])),
),
),
Add After: [Select]

// Labradoodle-360; Email Template Editor
'emailtemplates' => array(
'label' => $txt['email_template_editor'],
'file' => 'EmailTemplateEditor.php',
'function' => 'ModifyEmailTemplates',
'icon' => 'application_view_tile.png',
),
// End Labradoodle-360; Email Template Editor

I assume that means drop the email editor code in BEFORE   'profile' => array etc. which would give me

Code: [Select]
),
'featuresettings' => array(
'label' => $txt['modSettings_title'],
'file' => 'ManageSettings.php',
'function' => 'ModifyFeatureSettings',
'icon' => 'features.gif',
'subsections' => array(
'basic' => array($txt['mods_cat_features']),
'layout' => array($txt['mods_cat_layout']),
'karma' => array($txt['karma'], 'enabled' => in_array('k', $context['admin_features'])),
'sig' => array($txt['signature_settings_short']),
// Labradoodle-360; Email Template Editor
'emailtemplates' => array(
'label' => $txt['email_template_editor'],
'file' => 'EmailTemplateEditor.php',
'function' => 'ModifyEmailTemplates',
'icon' => 'application_view_tile.png',
),
// End Labradoodle-360; Email Template Editor
'profile' => array($txt['custom_profile_shorttitle'], 'enabled' => in_array('cp', $context['admin_features'])),
),
),
'securitysettings' => array(
'label' => $txt['admin_security_moderation'],
'file' => 'ManageSettings.php',
'function' => 'ModifySecuritySettings',
'icon' => 'security.gif',
'subsections' => array(
'general' => array($txt['mods_cat_security_general']),
'spam' => array($txt['antispam_title']),
'moderation' => array($txt['moderation_settings_short'], 'enabled' => substr($modSettings['warning_settings'], 0, 1) == 1),
),
),

Is that really right, or should it go in AFTER  'profile' => array etc. please?
Title: Re: Email Template Editor
Post by: Matthew K. on August 08, 2011, 02:38:07 PM
You add
Code: [Select]
// Labradoodle-360; Email Template Editor
'emailtemplates' => array(
'label' => $txt['email_template_editor'],
'file' => 'EmailTemplateEditor.php',
'function' => 'ModifyEmailTemplates',
'icon' => 'application_view_tile.png',
),
// End Labradoodle-360; Email Template Editor
Right after
Code: [Select]
'profile' => array($txt['custom_profile_shorttitle'], 'enabled' => in_array('cp', $context['admin_features'])),
),
),
Sorry for the confusion, hope this helps!
Title: Re: Email Template Editor
Post by: treehugger on August 08, 2011, 02:48:27 PM
Thank you for your quick reply Labradoodle -360. :)

I confuse easily and some mod writers say Before means After and other say After means After and guessing by deciding whether something 'looks' right doesn't always work - not for me anyway. ;D
Title: Re: Email Template Editor
Post by: Matthew K. on August 08, 2011, 02:53:28 PM
Not a problem treehugger.

And actually, if you follow the parser it's always "after" if it says "after" and same for before, the confusion is with the actual XML as it's reverse, search for "1" and add "2" BEFORE 1.

Enjoy!

 :-[ :-[ :-[ It's taken me about three years to finally train myself to remember that Before means After -  :'( no wonder my mods are causing havoc!!
Title: Re: Email Template Editor
Post by: Matthew K. on August 08, 2011, 03:55:37 PM
Sorry to hear that, it does get quite confusing sometimes. But just remember the XML is backwards of what it sounds like, and the package parser parses it correctly.

Title: Re: Email Template Editor

This should definitely work with 2.0.1 out of the box...using version emulate.
Title: Re: Email Template Editor

The auto loader won't work and when I go to parse the manual download instructions it says that it isn't compatible with this version. Not sure what you mean by version emulate.

Possibly, the HTML formatting allowed in emails is limited, and it'd be tough to control.

I am on smf 2.0.2 now

after emulating and installing without errors. when trying to access the set up option of this mod I get this error

Fatal error: Cannot redeclare template_add() (previously declared in /Themes/default/AutoRespond.template.php:18) in /Themes/default/EmailTemplateEditor.template.php on line 188

its not urgent but any help appreciated.

thank you so much for the fast respond. that fixed the issue.

actually I forgot to mention earlier that I had it installed on my test forum (no mods installed) and all went well. but this forum was installed 2.0.2 right away unlike my active forum which was 2.0.1 then patched to 2.0.2

I even thought that it could be another mod installed and causing the conflict, therefore I uninstalled PM new members, yet did not fix the problem earlier. which made me wondering what is the real cause of it?

I mentioned the above to other members and mod author

thanks again
Title: Re: Email Template Editor
Post by: Matthew K. on January 12, 2012, 11:39:32 AM
The modification "AutoRespond" conflicts with Email Template Editor, apparently :)

Why? Because both of our modifications have "template_add"'s, which is dumb, function names should NOT be that generic. Whenever I get around to updating this modification, the problem will definitely be solved.

I'm trying to install this mod (Email Template Editor); running SMF 2.0.2 w/update 1.0, and have used package installer w/o problems for a few other mods.  When I try to install Email Template Editor by uploading the zipped file from my PC, I receive the following error:

The package you are trying to download or install is either corrupt or not compatible with this version of SMF.

The zip file permissions are 0777.

When I try to install directly from SMF, I receive the error:

Although the package was downloaded to the server it appears to be empty. Please check the Packages directory, and the "temp" sub-directory are both writable. If you continue to experience this problem ...

Packages & its subdirectory temp permissions are both 755.

Suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Try installing the package via the Package Manager without modifying it at all. Use Version Emulate under the "Advanced" link.

Thank you.

What version should I emulate?  I tried typing in "SMF 2.0 RC5" but I still don't get the option to install (nor with 2.02).  Please see attached screenshot.

Post by: Matthew K. on March 25, 2012, 05:09:23 PM
Version Emulate literally can't hurt anything, it just attempts to install a mod for your version that aren't "officially" compatible with your version even though the edits may still work.

I specifically installed this MOD, because I wanted to edit the eMail that gets sent out on Birthday's.

I can't seem to find the Birthday email in the template. Am I blind, or, is this something that wasn't integrated into this mod? Thanks! :)

That is actually an existing setting somewhere, I believe. Part of Calendar, maybe? I don't think it's directly a part of email templates.

Birthday email template is in Administration Center » Mail » Settings, but you can't edit it there, or edit option is somewhere else..

Yeah, who knows, they might incorporate it for 2.1 if it's requested enough for the core. It's definitely more useful than having to manually modify the files, plus it stores the originals in case you want to revert.

Although it's definitely time for a rewrite if I ever have time :P

First off, GREAT mod!!!

Secondly, I have another mod (Join Reason) that I have modified to request for the name of the person/place referring them to my site.  I'd like to integrate their answer into the auto-generated email that comes to me as Admin (Admin Notify Approval).

My question is this: when using your mod to write up an email, there is a list of Global Preset Variables and I'd like to enter in a variable into that email that will automatically pull that into the email sent to me. Is that a possibility?

***EDIT*** I did notice that you had asked a previous poster to refer to the Join Reason mod dev on instructions regarding this, and I seem to have gotten a partial answer, but I still do not know how to manipulate the Global Variables to add a '{JOINREASON}'

Thank you!!!!!

Title: Re: Email Template Editor

Understandable, but isn't the Global Preset Variables for the Email part of your mod? How do I add more variables aside from the prearranged ones? ({REALNAME}, {USERNAME}, etc)
Title: Re: Email Template Editor
Post by: Matthew K. on October 30, 2012, 12:50:26 PM
Yeah, of course it's from my side. It's a simple str_replace(); on all of the variables. So to get join reason in scope it may be more than using a $context variable or something. The variables that are provided are variables that are already in scope, or already available for use in the template(s) already.

Look in one of the edits for a str_replace(); there are two arrays, one is 'searches', and one is 'replaces'. An example would be: $message_body = str_replace(array('{USERNAME}', '{REALNAME}'), array($context['member']['name'], $context['member']['real_name']), $message_body);
Title: Re: Email Template Editor
Post by: fairchilde on October 30, 2012, 08:12:54 PM
That makes perfect sense, and should be easy to manipulate. Is there a location or file that I should be looking for the existing str_replace and add this one to? I searched through the files on my host and couldn't find any instances where it was used. Any follow up recommendations?
Title: Re: Email Template Editor
Post by: Matthew K. on October 31, 2012, 10:23:13 AM
Well, if you parse the mod on the mod site, or look in the package, you'll be able to find all of Email Template Editors code, which would also have the str_replace(); be it in an edit, or in a file, it'd be there. Most likely, when I wrote this...I put it in a direct modification, and not it's own file. Which would make it easier to track for you, actually. But not as good of a practice overall.

Let's go ahead and parse it...Email Template Editor (http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=2926), select 2.0 RC5 from the compatibility list on the right, and then click Parse. Hmm, I don't see any str_replace();'s. So that must mean it's in an Email Template Editor file. So, we'll download the .zip, extract the archive, and open "EmailTemplateEditor.php".

Lines 73-81:
Code: (Global Preset Variables) [Select]
// Global Pre-Set Variables...
$context['email_templates']['preset_variables']['global'] = array(
'forumname' => '{FORUMNAME}',
'scripturl' => '{SCRIPTURL}',
'themeurl' => '{THEMEURL}',
'imagesurl' => '{IMAGESURL}',
'default_themeurl' => '{DEFAULT_THEMEURL}',
'regards' => '{REGARDS}'
);
Actually, it's quite surprising how well I wrote this for how long ago it was.

Hope this helps!
Have a fantastic day!

Hey guys; Installed and works great, but I do have a question.

The email it brought up when I first asked it to let me edit came in with a lot of {DESCRIPTION's} that didn't phase through into links and so such, such as: {USERNAME}, {FORGOTPASSWORDLINK}, {ACTIVATIONLINK}, {ACTIVATIONLINKWITHOUTCODE} and {ACTIVATION CODE}

I'm happy to manually add them, or whatever, but... I have no idea how to go about it. I mean, I see your code quote above, pointing out where the ones that worked are, but how do I know which bit is relevant for the information I don't have?

Thank you :)
Title: Re: Email Template Editor
Post by: Matthew K. on January 16, 2013, 06:21:23 AM
Those "quick variables" will only work in certain email templates that already parse them.
Title: Re: Email Template Editor
Post by: FireDitto on January 16, 2013, 07:06:25 AM
Oh.

How would I go about making them work now? Can I make them 'global'?
Title: Re: Email Template Editor
Post by: Matthew K. on January 16, 2013, 07:11:36 AM
To make a "global preset variable" or whatever I call them in this modification, you'd need to write some sort of str_replace(); that actually replaced the "text" with the substance you expect. For instance...$string = '{scripturl}' -> str_replace('{scripturl}', $scripturl, $string);

If the data is not in an existing variable, you have to retrieve it somehow with a query or what not, so it can definitely get more complicated depending on what you are trying to access. What is your goal here?
Title: Re: Email Template Editor
Post by: FireDitto on January 16, 2013, 10:14:16 AM
I think I understood that, lol. I need to go to bed, so I'll re-read that and make sense of it in the morning.

Namely, to make whatever crops up in the default email style work as it was intended to; I just want to easily edit the flowery text around the needed information. So that would be those above, and whatever others crop up in the other email templates, I expect.
Title: Re: Email Template Editor
Post by: Arantor on February 19, 2013, 04:03:29 PM
As a suggestion, would it not be worth taking the time to go through the email templates, finding out what variables they use (not just what they claim to use, but what the source actually exposes to the email loader), and providing that as a list to users?

I've been doing that today and I've gone through all the templates, figuring out what's available, it's pretty dull to backtrace everything though ;) I did also harmonise some stuff, for consistency as well as provide a description to users of when each email will be sent.

When I first saw the mod, I actually thought the list on the left were actually a set of buttons that one could click to have the variable inserted directly into the body, like bbcode etc. is in the main editor normally. Might be another nice feature to add.

It certainly would be a great addition to 2.1 and I see no reason at all not to include it as a core feature (you're a developer, just implement it and worry about complaints later, hahah). I'd also be inclined to move it to Admin > Maintenance > Mail as a subitem rather than in the main area, though. Keeps all the mail stuff together.

If it does get added, spending the extra day to collate all the information is really worth it IMHO.(Screenshot attached for what it can look like. I suck at UI.)

Title: Re: Email Template Editor
Post by: srs on May 19, 2013, 06:15:58 AM
No idea. I am setting up the forum on a windows platform using a well established web site.
My local copies of the web site are in one of my local drives - not c:
The installation should be taking place on the web site copy, NOT anywhere on my own computer or involving my own computer's file structures.
Title: Re: Email Template Editor
Post by: Arantor on May 19, 2013, 09:43:01 AM
The installation takes place wherever the webserver has the files. IIS uses C:\Inetpub to store websites... and I seem to remember it's an utter pain changing that.

Title: Re: Email Template Editor

for sure. it would be easier for me personally.. but i think it would be easier and more helpfull to make a small update of the mod... less people would be confused.. less people have problems on install.. its unnecessary to hint every few posts to emulate old versions..
so the community participates by only changing a single line in a xml file..

What's the point in saying that? Now that Arantor is helping the development out, he's adding a lot and fixing a lot, which is taking longer, but it's still important to do. I'm not going to waste my time backporting mods to 1.1.
Title: Re: Email Template Editor

And that's relevant how exactly?
Title: Re: Email Template Editor
Post by: Matthew K. on January 04, 2014, 06:57:41 PM
I'm not sure what the point of Solo's post was in the first place. But I do believe he was referring to the fact I was saying SMF 2.1 will be out soon, as a reason for not backporting this modification to SMF 1.1, so I was explaining why SMF 2.1 has taken so long. Which is a very good thing. It's going to be a lot better with everything you're doing, and I appreciate all of the time and expertise you're putting into it.
Title: Re: Email Template Editor
Post by: Arantor on January 04, 2014, 07:01:22 PM
Well, I wouldn't really use the '2.1 is coming soon' aspect because that's not really the right aspect to look at.

1) This mod basically can't be backported because 1.x doesn't use the email template system, it was built for 2.0. So you'd have to modify every single individual place that does email sending.

2) SMF 1.1.x will soon be unsupported by us. Though that IS because of 2.1, but not because 2.1 is new as such, but because that will mean we have two active branches of SMF that are supported and maintained.
Title: Re: Email Template Editor
Post by: Matthew K. on January 04, 2014, 07:09:20 PM
Yeah, so I'm right in a sense, but maybe not as detailed as how you just put it. Sorry to all if I wasn't clear on why I wasn't backporting this. I've not written any modification for SMF 1.1.x outside of freelance work, in a very very long time.

Also I could port it back, but I'd have to rewrite everything, like you said.

Hey everyone...

I have gone through and manually installed the mod in to version 2.0.8. Everything was found spot on, with no changes needed. I have verified everything 4 times now, and can not get the Email Template Editor to show on the admin page under Configuration.

Everything is spot on. The package install file and each file modified have no difference in what to find and what to add. The install.php has been installed, and the files have been copied to the right places.

What can I post to possibly assist in helping?

Thanks!

Attach your ./Sources/Admin.php and ./Sources/ManageSettings.php.

So I *somewhat* fixed it. I went back through and manually uninstalled it, and deleted the files it copied. I then went in to the package file and added 2.0.8, and it installed with no errors at all. Now, my only issue is that it shows no templates in the listing. And if I select any of the templates and hit create, it wants to create them as brand new templates.

So now I don't know what is wrong. Would those two files still help?
Title: Re: Email Template Editor

No. At this point, it's successfully installed. You select a template to create a "clone" of, and create it as a brand new template, from the clone, or, the original. Go ahead and create it and then you'll be able to modify it as you wish.

Okay. Just wondering, since your pictures you show have a bunch of stuff listed, I didn't know if they were supposed to list first, then you can edit them, or what. Thanks again!

Any update on this mod for 2.0.9?  I really don't want to do a manual install.

You should be able to use version emulate. The next update will be for SMF 2.1, which will also include an update for SMF 2.0.9 most likely.

No. As of now, this modification does not support HTML content in the emails. This is in the plans for the future if I get enough support to make a new SMF 2.1 version.

I installed this mod through package manager with no errors. I was able to send a test email to myself through that function. I changed the Admin Approve email, but not the request membership email. So, then, I signed up a test user to my forum. The request membership email showed up (forum default since I did not change that one) but the Admin Approve email did not come through. Any suggestions on what is going on. I have no errors in my error log. I am running SMF 2.0.11

I would go through the modifications that this mod makes and make sure that they were all installed correctly. If so, let me know.

Should work, you can give it a try.

Remember to do a backup before you install it - How can I install a mod that doesn't work in my SMF version? (http://wiki.simplemachines.org/smf/How_can_I_install_a_mod_that_doesn%27t_work_in_my_SMF_version)

Actually...SMF does this automatically. You can debate about whether it's wise to do additionally yourself, but SMF's well for backing up the files before you install a mod.

And this modification should work using version emulate. I'm not going to be updating any of my mods until SMF 2.1.
