The hint is that in order to comply with the rules, there should be no validation errors.

Yes, you can show it every where you want by add this line
require_once($boarddir."/NChat/NChatBoardIndex.php");
You should add this line before or some where to show the chat box at the bottom
template_info_center();
P/s: a update available, in this up date, I decided to display a unavailable error message instead of reload the window - I thought I'll help if your Internet line was disconect - but it was a stupid idea :))
Thanks for your Translation. It's very helpfull when you tranlate the unavilable error message to serbian_latin-utf8 too!
How could you change the default color of the text? MY theme is dark, and you can't see the text at all when it's set at black.

How could you change the default color of the text? MY theme is dark, and you can't see the text at all when it's set at black.
You can change the style of
NChat_admin_shoutbox DIV tag by adding
color:red; at the end of style attribute:
find this tag in NChatBoardIndex.php and NChatHandle.php
<div id="NChat_admin_shoutbox" style="width:100%;height:150px;overflow:auto;border-style:solid;border-width:0.5px;"></div>
Replace with this code if you want the text is red
<div id="NChat_admin_shoutbox" style="width:100%;height:150px;overflow:auto;border-style:solid;border-width:0.5px;]color:red;"></div>
Tried the edit. Default color still comes up as black.
EDIT: Just found out that the code you gave me changes the username colors in the chat. I was asking to change the actual message default color from black to a different one.
Oh men, Sorry! How stupid I am! I just forgot what I have done before!
Open NChatBoardIndex.php and NChatHandle.php
You will find:
<select onchange="NChat_color();" id="NChat_color">
<option selected="selected" value="Black">'.$txt['NChat_black'].'</option>
<option style="background: Red;" value="Red">'.$txt['NChat_red'].'</option>
<option style="background: Teal;" value="Teal">'.$txt['NChat_teal'].'</option>
<option style="background: Blue;" value="Blue">'.$txt['NChat_blue'].'</option>
<option style="background: Green;" value="Green">'.$txt['NChat_green'].'</option>
<option style="background: Brown;" value="Brown">'.$txt['NChat_brown'].'</option>
<option style="background: Orange;" value="Orange">'.$txt['NChat_orange'].'</option>
</select>
Now you see:
<option selected="selected" value="Black">'.$txt['NChat_black'].'</option>
Remove the selected="selected" and add it to the Color option that you like.
Replace this code will show the default text is red:
<select onchange="NChat_color();" id="NChat_color">
<option value="Black">'.$txt['NChat_black'].'</option>
<option selected="selected" style="background: Red;" value="Red">'.$txt['NChat_red'].'</option>
<option style="background: Teal;" value="Teal">'.$txt['NChat_teal'].'</option>
<option style="background: Blue;" value="Blue">'.$txt['NChat_blue'].'</option>
<option style="background: Green;" value="Green">'.$txt['NChat_green'].'</option>
<option style="background: Brown;" value="Brown">'.$txt['NChat_brown'].'</option>
<option style="background: Orange;" value="Orange">'.$txt['NChat_orange'].'</option>
</select>
Add this line before the end tag (</script>) of the javascript block of NChat Mod:
NChatInput.style.color = document.getElementById(\'NChat_color\').value;
Thank you, worked liek a charm.
So I got the admins names to change to red, with your previous code. Anyway to get the moderators a different color from users?
Or even better, is there a way to recognize colors of membergroups?
Nice mod, I too changed it to default red - works great!
I would like to change posts from bottom to top to top being oldest to bottom newest is this easy to do? Thanks again for the gr8 mod!

Yes, but now you just can define color for 3 gruops: Admin, Supper Mod, Guest
just open NChatSetting.php and you will see a serialized string. Find the part
"admincolor";s:7:"#ff0000" and change it to the color you want!
Not that you should you the #rrggbb format for the color (so you do not need change the string len....)
I'm working for this feature, that you can edit some more thing in the index (like the way you disable, enableguest), but I was too busy. :(

Yes, that simple open NChatHandle.php, In NChatReader Function find and replace this line:
for($i=(count($mess)-1);$i>=0;$i--){
With this line
for($i=0;$i<=(count($mess)-1);$i++){
That worked, only when the page loads or is refreshed it is showing the oldest and I have to scroll down to see the newest each time the page gets loaded. Any quick fix?

Yes, you can do it, quite of simple, just a single javascript line.
But it work not exaclly in IE, but 100% in FF, GC and Opera.
Add this line before the end of NChatMod javascript block
document.getElementById("NChat_admin_shoutbox").scrollTop = 2500;

I don't know about that theme. But I sure that you can add this Mod for any theme by:
1. Open BoardIndex.template.php
2. Find
function template_main()
{
add after
global $boarddir, $boardurl;
go any where (inside function template_main) where toy want to show this shout box, add:
//NChat Mod
//You can move this line to somewhere that you hope to see the chatbox
require_once($boarddir."/NChat/NChatBoardIndex.php");

If you want to make the text (other than the actual shouts) whit, then in NChatBoardIndex,
<div id="NChat_admin_shoutbox" style="width:100%;height:150px;overflow:auto;border-style:solid;border-width:0.5px;">
<div id="NChat_admin_shoutbox" style="width:100%;height:150px;overflow:auto;border-style:solid;border-width:0.5px;color: white;">
If you want the option to have white text in shouts (and enabling it by default), in the same file,
<option selected="selected" value="Black">'.$txt['NChat_black'].'</option>
<option selected="selected" value="White">White</option>
<option value="Black">'.$txt['NChat_black'].'</option>

If there is no message after page loades, this is not a bug, I thought just how to the browser work. When you refesh the page, the browser will stop all the current request...so you get the message.

why i can still chat as guest?
When you click on disable guest, the page will refesh, and so, you get the message (I have exaplaned).
Did you wait untill the page reloaded? And did you remember to logout? When you disable guest, guest no way can chat any more!
Rememmber to check the button - if you still see It say "Disable Guest" thats mean something wrong!
The functions of the Italic button and Underline buttons are reversed - the Italic button causes underlined text, and the Underline button causes Italic text. :P
Where do I change the color of the control button text (disable guest, clean, add smileys)? Now it's' white and I can barely read it.
Where do I set the refresh time of the chat box - I don't want it to refresh too often because my host might not like it!
When I click the Add Smileys button the smileys appear, but when I click the button again they do not disappear.
How can I add the chat box to the unread replies screen also?
After installing the Chat, I cannot use Home and End keys to move up and down the forum page. Before I could hit Home and it would go to the top of the forum, and End would move to the bottom of the forum.
I think it's just what I need, but I would suggest you add more and easier ways for the admin to customize it, maybe in a new update.
Thanks.
I think there is an error in one of your files.
From the file NChatBoardIndex.php
<button id="bold" onclick="NChat_format(this.id);" style="width:35px;font-weight:bold;color:black;">'.$txt['NChat_blod'].'</button>
Shouldn't this --> NChat_blod
be spelled like this --> NChat_bold
?

That's what I'm trying to figure out.
I've placed
//NChat Mod
//You can move this line to somewhere that you hope to see the chatbox
require_once($boarddir."/NChat/NChatBoardIndex.php");
After this -
// The main content should go here.
echo '
<div id="content_section"><div class="frame">
<div id="main_content_section">';
// Custom banners and shoutboxes should be placed here, before the linktree.
and everywhere else I can think of in index.template.php and the chat box never shows up. Where in the file is the code supposed to go?
@xrunner: you forgot something so the shoutbox does not show. Here is the step for showing the shoutbox before the link tree default themes:
1. in the function template_body_above()
{
add
global $boarddir, $boardurl;
2 Find:
theme_linktree();
replace with:
//NChat Mod
//You can move this line to somewhere that you hope to see the chatbox
require_once($boarddir."/NChat/NChatBoardIndex.php");
theme_linktree();
OK it's working!
Love the mod! Very simple.
But, on my themes it shows a black border around the chat box. Doesn't show the border on the default theme. It's not a HUGE deal but it looks bad. Anyway to edit the border out? 8)

Did you now anything about html and css. If yes you can edit the border by adding some css in to the div tag...
I'm very bad as designing, when I erite the mod I wonder that shuold I do anything ... like a frame around the shoutbox, but i say no because i think it never suit for all the theme :D
Appreciate the reply, I tried to change the CSS from border-style: solid; to border-style: none;
I tried, dotted, thin, etc, etc, etc. Nothing seems to affect the border at all? Anyone know more about CSS that knows how to change it?
Seems the border only shows up on firefox of all places. So maybe I'm doing the CSS wrong?
I'd also like to be able to float the text input box to the right of the coding boxes and make it smaller to make the shout a bit more compact. But nothing I'm doing seems to be affecting anything lol.
Anyone good with CSS?
lol, I figured it out.
I put a couple of   next to the text box, changed the width to 50% and added a float left to the div container that starts the html code boxes.
It goes back to normal when you select smilies, but hey.. can't have it all.
Oh yeah, I had to add a br clear=left right after the text box or the whole forum below will float too. If this helps anyone.
I tried to show the chat on all pages using your instructions. I cannot figure it out.
Does this work by editing the default theme? Or do you edit each theme? I tried both, it won't show up.

I tried editing index.template.php in the default theme first and it didn't work. I was using a custom theme though, and when I edited the index.template.php file in the custom theme directory it appeared on all the pages. make sure you put in the new variables too - $boarddir, $boardurl;

I tried editing index.template.php in the default theme first and it didn't work. I was using a custom theme though, and when I edited the index.template.php file in the custom theme directory it appeared on all the pages. make sure you put in the new variables too - $boarddir, $boardurl;
Can I have a quick example of what you mean with the variables? I don't see this in the thread.

Ok thanks bud! Works fine, must have missed this part. lol
Did we ever figure out how to get moderators working?
Just wondering. Is there any chance of playing a small sound wav or flash when people post? I kinda miss that.

So....what people? You or someone else?
You just can do the thing (the sound when post) just for your seft - and there is no way for your freind! :))
IS there any way to use a submit button? Because it's not possible to chat from the PS3 browser. Enter brings up the ps3 on screen keyboard even with a keyboard plugged in.

affter the text feild.
You are awesome! Thanks!
I sound like such an idiot but how can I edit it by adding new colours to the colours tab?
- Luis.
nvcnvn,
I know you are busy now, but I sincerely hope you can find time to make a second version and incorporate some additional suggestions in the future. I think with a few more improvements it's going to be the best shout box available for SMF.
Thanks.

Luis, nothing idiot here! :)
You can open the
NChatBoardIndex.phpFInd:
<option style="background: Orange;" value="Orange">'.$txt['NChat_orange'].'</option>
and add after
<option style="background: #c0c0c0;" value="#c0c0c0">Gray</option>
this will add the gray color (not sure this color called gray ornot ;)) my Enlgish very bad :D ). You should now something about RGB format for more color!

Is it possible to make links clickable? Or is that a new feature on the next version?

Nice guest! yes it will on the next version.
But maybe if you want you can:
Open
NChatHandle.php Find:
function NChatParser($subject = ''){
global $NChat, $smilies;
Add after
// Only do this if the preg survives. These line is SMF's code :P
if (is_string($result = preg_replace(
'~(?<=[\s>\.(;\'"]|^)((?:http|https)://[\w\-_%@:|]+(?:\.[\w\-_%]+)*(?::\d+)?(?:/[\w\-_\~%\.@,\?&;=#(){}+:\'\\\\]*)*[/\w\-_\~%@\?;=#}\\\\])~i'
,'<a href="$1" target="_blank">$1</a>'
, $subject)))
$subject = $result;
how can i make so that guest can see the chat but not able to chat?

1 Remeber to disable Guest.
2. Edit these code:
2a. Open NChatBoardIndex.php
find

echo '
replace

2b. Open NChatHandle.php
find

hello...at first i have to say your Shoutbox is really great good work.....Now to my question...is it possible to change the Background of the Shoutbox?
Open NChatHandler.php
Find
<div id="NChat_admin_shoutbox" style="width:100%;height:150px;overflow:auto;border-style:solid;border-width:0.5px;"></div>
Replace
<div id="NChat_admin_shoutbox" style="width:100%;height:150px;overflow:auto;border-style:solid;border-width:0.5px;background-color:yellow;"></div>
For the background as yellow!
Have some fun!
That background code doesn't have any effect on my forum. I tried many different colors and checked the code - it has no effect.

I use Firefox. It doesn't seem to work under that browser.

thise are my simple custom changes to the NChat MOD ( Browser - Mozzila Firefox ) :
Step 1 : Find and add these lines :
.../NChat/NChatBoardIndex.php
find -if($NChatInfo['can_chat'] == true){
echo '
add after - <center>
<span style="text-align:justify;color:red;text-shadow:4px 4px 8px #758ACC;"><blink><font size="4";>Oui5 General Chat[/color]</font></blink></span>
</center>
<p> </p>
find - <div id="NChat_admin_shoutbox" style="width:100%;height:150px;overflow:auto;border-style:solid;border-width:0.5px;"></div>
replace with - <div id="NChat_admin_shoutbox" style="width:100%;height:150px;overflow:auto;border-style:solid;border-width:0.5px;background-color:#DCE3E9;"></div>
<div style="height:35px;">
<p> </p>
find - <input id="NChat_input" onkeypress="if((event.keyCode == 13) && (this.value.length > 0)){ NChat_sender(); return false;}" contenteditable="true" style="width:100%;" />
replace with - <p> </p>

I don't mean to speak for the author, but I'm pretty sure whoever is logged into the forum is automatically an online chatter, effectively (unless guests are allowed to chat).
this is a global forum chat, not individual , all online members will be also online for chat too, by default
in the next update will be included :
Future Developments:
Ability to set:
+ Chat Window refresh time (default : 3s)
+ Number of messages shown in the window (25)
+ Set maximum length of each message
+ Turn On/off censor (On by default right now)
+ Turn On/off smilies, bbcode support, etc
+ Admin, Mod, Guest user colors in chat
+ Archive function
+ Channel chat (private chat with one person)
You two are wrong, if I didn't use it inside my board.
I can use it acessing the link : www.mycommunity.com/forum/chat
What I want to show, are the users online on that page.
Best Regards.

Sr, I forget this, the answer is:
There is no simple way to do this!
Okay, so I am getting a similar issue to the guy who posted on the second page. I installed the mod, and it said that the mod was installed successfully. The chat box shows up on the front page of my forum, but right above it, it says "The ./NChat/index.php is now unavailable! Please contact admin forum about this issue!" I cannot post in the chat box, but it is visible and appears to be functional except that message.
Anyone have any ideas what could be wrong? Thanks.

using smf 2.0 rc5, tiny portal
installed nchat and it turned off the tp shoutbox, which is fine if we are going to use the nchat mod BUT
when the chat window came up we got this error message and for the life of me I have no clue why it is looking for something in the tpsubs file.
Notice: Undefined index: show_download in .../Source.php on line 201
that line deals with the tiny portal downloads part and I even turn off shoutbox and downloads removing the block for shoutbox too and yet it still came with that error
is it not compatible to use with tiny portal mod?

alright, I have uninstalled it for now but would love to have it work with Tiny Portal
just to let you know that Tiny Portal sent me the adjustment to their file to get it to behave with the portalThis is an error that I've fixed in the next release of TP. If you go to that line #201 in TPSubs.php you will see something like this:
Code: if($context['TPortal']['show_download'] == 0)
Change it to this:
Code: if(!empty($context['TPortal']['show_download']))
sorry if i missed it in all the answers here but so far i have got it to show on all pages, added a space between the box and the bbc buttons, fixed it so the I and U are no longer reversed and the B shows now too. A nice silver border and a submit button. font color is set now too for both the input box and the main area.
how to get the member group colors to show in the box for members?
is there a way to set the time stamp to be universal to show for everyone, something like month/date/year/time for instance 06/08/2011 then the time?
also -- sometimes when it refreshes or we go from one page to another in the forum I get that "unavailable message too. Is there a way to disable that message or if it is to show the page is refreshing....where to change the text

For now Just 3 simple color gruops: admin, supper mod and all the left as member.
There is no simple way to do that, I thought... but I'm thinking about that.

The mod timestamp is forum timestamp (you can edit in the Features and Options)

For forum timestamp: Features and Options >> General >> Default time format
The smiles come from Yahoo as the feature of the MOD

That worked, only when the page loads or is refreshed it is showing the oldest and I have to scroll down to see the newest each time the page gets loaded. Any quick fix?
Where do I donate for the cause?
Yes, you can do it, quite of simple, just a single javascript line.
But it work not exaclly in IE, but 100% in FF, GC and Opera.
Add this line before the end of NChatMod javascript block
document.getElementById("NChat_admin_shoutbox").scrollTop = 2500;
It's not working, really. I was trying that before read this post... and after that too. Sorry for my bad english.

What did you do with the looping in the mod? I couldn't really install it since my browsers detected never-ending loops and returned faults. Have a check soon (:

Sory but when you see it and where!?
Did you see the live demo here!? http://forum.thi.vn/
And what is your browser (anme and version!)
When I installed it on my server @ vnsp-community.net, have a look.
I used SMF's package installer to do the job, but the browser returns faults, both with Chrome and Firefox.
See these images:
1) Chrome: trisle.net/pictures/chrome.png
2) Firefox: trisle.net/pictures/firefox.png
The fault basically means that there are too many loops/redirects that can never end. Maybe I will lock at the script myself to see what happens...

Oh men! Thats some issue link to the package installation sytem, not my mod! Try to logout, delete all cookies and install agian!
Bạn ơi, đó là vấn đề liên quan tới hệ thống cài đặt, chứ đâu phải do gói Mod! Thử đăng xuất, xòa hết cookies rồii cài lại thử nhé!
It is possibly a server configuration issue, not the cookies/cache's since all the other mods are installed properly.
It works on my localhost as well, will try to install it manually.
Anyway, cám ơn (:

Just simple open the NChatBoardIndex.php
Find:
if($NChatInfo['admin'] == true)
Replace with:

When you want to modify some thing, just visit:

I mean to make option to reformat time format in chat :) I hardcoded your chat in my own format - just time [XX:XX]Nick:message, coz my forum time format is too long [Month 18, 2011, 11:01:36] and users with low resolution and small monitors making me crazy :)

Oh, I see! I will spend time for that!
Oh my gosh ... Why did you put all those configuration settings at the top of the chat box! Oh please, please put all that stuff on a configuration page under "Modifications"!
Also, can you please tell me how to remove that entire Horizontal Admin help bar? It's taking up too much room vertically. It would be better if all that configuration and help was placed under Admin - Configuration - Modification Settings - that's really where it's supposed to go.
Thanks for your work on improving this mod.
Oops - found another small bug.
When "Last line on top" is selected, and a new Shout is made, all the existing shouts automatically move down and you can see the new shout.
But, if "First line on top" is selected, and a new shout is entered, the existing shouts do not automatically move up. You need to move the scroll bar at the right to see the new shouts. This should be corrected so the new shouts move up automatically, like they do when "Last line on top" is selected.
You have not read my note (http://thismod.com/community/index.php?topic=3.0) yet...

1 To let it on the Modification Settings it will take more time! The thing is I quite of busy so I choose this way.
2 There is a point for that, for some setting the admin can edit the setting and see the changes immediately, but it really a mess so 3 show you how to hide it.
3 See http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=429695.msg3077644#msg3077644
Just you, an Admin can see the setting area so I do not thing it taking to much room.

Yes, I know how to hide the settings box, but I don't even want to see the Admin help bar - it doesn't belong there, it belongs in the Mod configuration area.
If it takes too much time for you at the moment then so be it, but it still needs to be located in the proper area. I appreciate your efforts on the mod, but It takes up more space than the previous version and it doesn't look as good on my forum. I hope you can find the time later to move it all to the proper area. I don't even want the single Admin help line there, It's taking up vertical space that I don't want to lose. To compensate for the loss of vertical space by that Admin help bar, how could the "Save" button be moved to the front of the text entry box, making them both on the same line? That would save vertical space. How could I do that?

Well, I do think it's a bug, I've used other shout boxes that put the newest shouts on the bottom and they scroll up automatically. Your shout box scrolls them all
down automatically when the Last line on top mode is selected, but it doesn't scroll them
up automatically when first line on top is selected. That's a bug in my book. I don't mean to seem unappreciative of your work, but a bug is a bug.
Quote
I sure that there is a message that say you should reload the page to take effect for this setting!
There is no message telling you to reload the page ... Have you tried it yourself? Anyway - reloading the page doesn't fix the bug. I'm not even sure exactly what it is you are trying to tell me here. I'm not saying the first line on top mode is not working at all, I'm saying it doesn't automatically scroll the responses
upwards like it should. You should not have to move the scroll bar every time a new shout is entered in this mode. Do you understand what I'm telling you? Do I need to explain it better? I don't want to use that mode if all my members have to scroll the shout box responses
up every time they enter a new shout.
Maybe I'd better make another post with a picture of what is going on.
maybe I will moe the admin setting area to the right way but not right now, maybe it look ugly, but just only you can see it not your member! And...
1. what is the Admin help bar you are talking about?
2. If you do not like Admin message line, open NChatBoardIndex.php

3. Try to download the mod agian, I not sure but I remember that I have upload the wrong file, after that (about 10 min) I have delete and upload the new one, so just download and try agian!
If there still the issue, so what is your Browser?
I have some test in:

FireFox 4.0.1 (windows 7) 3.5 (ubuntu 10.04)

If there is need to modify the settings, it easy to rename and (re-rename) that file via ftp....
one question - don't know if this is asked before - I miss the collapse/expand button to this chat like every board/category has it....

For example, open the NChatHandle.php, find:

The time is now (Hour 00 - 23 : minute 00 - 59)

The settings on the top of the chat are fine in my opinion; it's simply to edit everything very quick.
Very nice, simple, clean mod!
Congratulations nvcnvn & keep up the good work!

1 suggestion for the next release: some kind of "mute user" feature; basically... admin and globals should be able to mute users for a specific period of time. It would be a great feature! Thanks.

SMF 2.0 Default theme Nchat
From time to time, smiles button is not shown . Smilies is set to SMF smiles ... Reseting toı Yahoo and back again to SMF does not
bring Smiles button back. Ctrl+F5 does not help.

Yes you can do it! Just simple:
Open NChatHandle.php
Find:
$subject = htmlspecialchars(shorten_subject($subject , $NChat['lenght']));
add after:
$subject = str_replace('/me', $NChatInfo['name'], $subject);
Now try "Hi /me" and see what will show!

The issue is.....I have not add the smiles box for SMF smiles yet! :|
The problem is ; as if the "no smiles" option has been choosen. Niether "yahoo" nor "smf" brings the smiles button back.
I dont how this happens. Either logout / reboot / refresh makes smiles button invisible. The browsers I tried chrome and FF.
Where do you check the slimes button to be displayed and on what conditions ?

The Add siles button will hide in SMF smiles.
If you switch back to Yahoo smiles, reload your forum the Smiles will show again!

Is it possible for us to add smileys to the list in the file NChatSmiles.txt ?
Yes, or even you ca replace your new smiles.
1. To add some more
Open NChat folder, creat a test.php.
In test.php, for example you want a new smiles with the icon is
T.T and the image url is
hxxp://example.com/path/example1.gif
<?php
$smiles = unserialize(file_get_contents('NChatSmiles.txt'));
$smiles['T.T'] = "<img src='http://example.com/path/example1.gif' alt='*' border='0' />";
$smiles['Oo'] = "<img src='http://example.com/path/example2.gif' alt='*' border='0' />";
echo serialize($smiles);
?>
After that brows your test.php in your browser and view source it.
You will see a new serialized string, copy and paste it to your NChatSmiles.txt

You cannot remove the limit but can increase the lenght up to 300.
I think 300 is long enough for a chat message :)

I need some help here. I upgraded to SMF 2.0, and now I'm trying to uninstall this mod. But once I uninstall it, it gives me errors on my forum. Any help is appreciated.
Picture and Load.php attached below.

EDIT: Got this fixed by going to each custom theme, and deleting the nchat lines from the boardindex.
Hi, sorry but i´ll try to add this on a TinyPortal bloc, but i have no clue how to do. I haven't find any answers in the, but maybe i´m to tired.
Is it possible to add to Tinyortal bloc?
Thanks in advance.
I am still waiting for an update with turkish translation and the new features.

Thank you.
Is it possible to show the chatbox above the last 10 messages or statics ? :)
Hi users and global mods can see the admin panel, the code you posted before doesn't seem to work for me what can I do??
Ok, something is wrong. Editing the Mod color isn't working.
I'm just putting there the code for another color, then click on Edit Mod Color and nothing. Even refreshed the page.. still nothing.
It only works for Admin and Member Color.

gotta say I love this mod but there is just one option I still can not get to work and that is making the mod color change.
I have the latest version of NChat (1.2) and SMF (2.0 Gold), but no matter what setting I set for the mod color, every time my global mod makes a shout his their color is the same as a regular members and they have no access to the mod panel of the shoutbox to delete shouts, and what not.
ANy idea on a fix for this?
SMf 2.0 default theme Simple Portal 2.3.3
From hosting firm received a warning about exceeding bandwith ..
Analized awstats output and seen that
nchat/index.php viewed 981374 times avarage 20kb which means 981374*20= roughly 19GB ...
what is wrong ? no SQL no bandwitdh is a myth ?

The number is to big...but for how long?
You say
no SQL no bandwitdh but I say
no SQL save BWNow you can save more bw by reduced the lenght of meassge or the number of message, increase the time load.
I'm try ing to make the mod more
save bw. wait for the next version!

The statistic for only august from 01 to 17 august. I have to uninstall the package but facing fatal errors. In the
parse you mention only boardindex.template.php BUT ;
"//NChat Mod
//You can move this line to somewhere that you hope to see the chatbox
require_once($boarddir."/NChat/NChatBoardIndex.php");
is in the index.template.php .
When I manually delete the lines from boardindex.template. php and indextemplate.php , remove /ncaht dir,
then when I browse the site , I have only the logo line and the menu items displayed the rest is not shown on the screen and white.
To recover, I reftp /nchat dir to my ftp server and do the package parse statements in php files again.
I cannot uninstall even with package mngr or manualy ... Pls help ....
------------------------
I think I found the reason.
In your FAQ you have : "How can I show the chat box every page on my forum?"
I did this change and this is the reason why I have indextemplate.php modified.
But still the problem is same
After removing changes in indextemplate.php and boardindex.template.php and removing /nchat dir
I cannot get my site up and running, only logo and menu buttons the rest is blank ...
Pls help ...
Has anybody managed to uninstall with package manager in SMF 2.0 gold ?
-------------------------
OK solved .. Doing manual updates and then forgetting them caused the problem...
forgot to remove " global $boarddir, $boardurl;" from index.template.php
Now nchat is uninstalled and no errors ..

Okay, this fixed the color setting but now regular mods can also delete shouts. Is there a way to make it only possible for global mods to do this?
My users are asking for a way to scroll up (it's set last line on bottom) to read the chat and preferably pause it so it dose not refresh, refresh is set a the maximum "6".
I don't think the refresh should be longer than that, but some way to pause would be nice, so you can back up and read it.
Thanks for a great mod! ;)
hello,
thank you for the nice chatbox
my question is, is there any way to make the chatbox post a link, by thread title name, to the chatbox as soon as it is posted to the forum?
thank you in advance in assistance in this matter
Hi there,
Great mod, thanks for all your hard work.
Can you take a look at this webpage:
www.nottinghamsnooker.com/NChat/index.php
How can I get the chat to appear on the right hand side, next to the embedded video player? I want to make the embedded video player bigger, roughly 50% screen width with the chat taking up the other 50%. Is there any way I can do this?
How do I hide/disable the big white menu I see above my NChat:
(https://www.simplemachines.org/community/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi56.tinypic.com%2Fe04vlv.png&hash=c6ad00b2cad62c1c5528217d9d072f81a0445504)
I followed these steps but it is still showing up:
Quote5. Can I hide the admin settings
The design aim to make everything easy to you, the admin can edit the setting and see the changes immediately, but it really a mess. You can hide it if you want, just follow:
Open the NChatBoardIndex.php
Find:
Code: [Select]
if($NChatInfo['admin'] == true)
Replace with:
Code: [Select]
if(false)
When you want to modify some thing, just visit: your-domain.com/forum/NChat/index.php, there is a nother admin settings area.
Nevermind the other issue. I figured it out and now the admin menu is disabled. Now I would like to know is how do I get the NChat to show up on themes: Core, Pink Floral, and Skm Light. It's showing up on my other themes but these 3.
is there anyway to use this /Nchat in new window(without forums, only chatbox) or popup
when i tried, it had issues with SSI.php as one needs to be logged in or his session sent through forum index page
Can't you simply use someurl/NChat/index.php ?
i tried but it had problems with login.
header needed ./Sources/SSI.php to be executed once before running /NChat/index.php
if someone goes to /NChat through forum index page , then no problem.
but if someone goes directlt to /NChat/index.php, then header shows sessions error
Hi all!

Why not just use the simpleportal shoutbox ?
Because it is very server intensive. Each time i use simple portals shoutbox, the cpu usage goes to 100%. It refreshes terribly and there is no way to delete shouts. Nchat is suppose to be set up to not use as much of the servers cpu and save bandwidth. I would think there is a simple code for using this mod in simple portal and not have to use simple portals junk shoutbox.

Can you insert HTML code in to your block? If yes...here
Create a file, let say name
embed.php and but it in NChat folder
<?php
//NChat by ThidMod.com
require_once('../SSI.php');
require_once('NChatBoardIndex.php')
?>
After that insert an html code:
<iframe src="your-domain.com/forum/NChat/embed.php"></iframe>

HI, did you know about Manual installation of mods.
You can read here http://wiki.simplemachines.org/smf/Manual_installation_of_mods
I looked in the .xml file for the Pink Floral theme and it doesn't contain any of the tags listed in these instructions. I also looked for a .xml or .mod file in the NChat directory and it doesn't have these files.
Hi love the chat mod,
But i dont know why but it uses a lot of bandwidth, it is using about 6GB a day with only 30 people using it, is there anyway to bring that down.
also Version 1.3 doesnt autoscroll to the newest message

There is my big mistake of me with the mod! I have a new fixed path for it!
About the BW issue, you say
6GB a day with only 30 people using i, that's mean your website just have 30 visitor a day or what? Are you sure all of 6 GB is come from NChat?
The fact is you can reach that if you have 30 member online 24/24 just for chat!
To reducedt he BW, I think you should try:
1 increase the reload time (6000 or 8000)
2 Use Yahoo! Smile instead of your SMF smiles
3 Do not enable sound.
4 decrease the number and length of message.

About the BW issue, you say 6GB a day with only 30 people using i, that's mean your website just have 30 visitor a day or what? Are you sure all of 6 GB is come from NChat?
The fact is you can reach that if you have 30 member online 24/24 just for chat!
To reducedt he BW, I think you should try:
1 increase the reload time (6000 or 8000)
2 Use Yahoo! Smile instead of your SMF smiles
3 Do not enable sound.
4 decrease the number and length of message.
Thanks for the quick reply,
30 or less members or so on chat for about 12 hours of the day
50 messages shown in chat
150 length of message
3 sec reload time
SMF smilies enabled
checked my cpanel usage and it all points to nchat as the culprit. ive now put the reload time to 5seconds, disabled smilies, will see how it goes.
HERE IS A SCREENSHOT OF WHAT MY CPANEL SAYS
(https://www.simplemachines.org/community/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg832.imageshack.us%2Fimg832%2F5259%2Fclipboard01xw.jpg&hash=64078d61b98ce5654d264170b692d714f2ec5918)

How do I get the chat to show up on themes: Core, Pink Floral, and Skm Light? I looked every where in my admin panel and don't see how to fix this.
HI, did you know about Manual installation of mods.
You can read here http://wiki.simplemachines.org/smf/Manual_installation_of_mods
I looked in the .xml file for the Pink Floral theme and it doesn't contain any of the tags listed in these instructions. I also looked for a .xml or .mod file in the NChat directory and it doesn't have these files.
where do i find the .xml or .mod file?
Unzip the file that you have downloaded (http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?action=download;mod=2846;id=186421).
Give me your theme's downlaod link, I will try if I could :)

In many case, increase time to reload to 10.000 milisecond will help! And...
Open ./NChat/NChatBoardIndex.php
find:
var limit_time = 1; //in second
replace with:
var limit_time = 2; //in second
The bigger number will help you reduce the cpu loads... but it will make the chat quite of delay!
But the fact is: If your forum is to big, you may need a big enough hosting!
@BrokenFEMALE: wait, I will help you with your theme soon!
Mmm... I'm getting an error when using IE 8. I can't see what others are writing.. and can't add messages. Look:
Also.. when I'm trying to mute someone on all browsers.. I can't. I just get an error .. on address bar is javascript:nchat_mute(nchat_small_mess[2]) and the page is full white with a small text in the left up corner: false
Also.. how do I set the colors of the users ?
Suggestions ?

I hope you can because i feel lost, lol!
nvcnvn, I just wanted to see if you were able to find a solution to my issue?
Great work nvcnvn,
yet I have installed the box and gave me the usual error. The ./nchat/index.php is now unavailable! Please contact admin forum about this issue! I changed permission of the mentioned files, yet I was not able to find NChatSetting.php ! I even extracted the files on my computer from the .rar and NChatSetting.php was not there. I uninstalled and re-installed manually but unfortunately got the same error.
what also was noticed during the manual or self installation that I was not able to locate the chat setting that as far as I understood should be located above/before (Modification Settings) according to the place of the code in Admin.php due to parse ... but when I install
Quote//NChat by ThisMod.com

AFTER
Quote// Mod authors, once again, if you have a whole section to add do it AFTER this line, and keep a comma at the end.
I was able to have chat setting field!
do you have any idea what is going on here?
btw, I use 2 RC4
thanks in advance

I use the default one that comes with Tiny Portal add-on, does not refresh but is site friendly and not resource heavy at all

I think you may have to manually edit the other themes board index file? not sure been awhile since I took a look at the readme it comes with.
Hi,
first off great little mod and working perfectly on 2.0.1. I am trying to figure out a simple way to use the upshrink on smf or a similar method to either enable NChat to be seen or hidden.
Reason some of our members are old and don't want to chat ;)
Has anyone successfully done this or got some good ideas on how to go about it. I have been playing unsuccessfully with using the info center upshrink code so far
cheers

Build one more membergroup - set the permission about chat, but all of them who don't want to chat on this!
Thanks for that nice quick reply and temporary fix, already done :).
It still doesn't quite achieve what I want. To encourage participation on the forum and sense of community I still want everyone to see the Chat Box shrink bar up the top and be able to single click it down and have a look and hopefully join in.
So is it possible to consider in the next version? or if anyone else has done it I would appreciate a bit of guidance.

I had that funny glitch with Internet Exploder I found Nchat doesn't like being run without sound on it? Try enabling the sound and give it another go. It worked fine on FF Chrome and even a clunky early version of Opera with the sound off but IE was strange.

I am considering upgrading to 2.0.1 and also will try 1.3.2 and will let you know the results at that time.
btw, my website on shared hosting. and I expect an average of 5 users to chat at a time. do you think this may take a lot of resources from the hosting company?
I already used Ajax chat before and they complained about it, therefore I had to uninstall it. do you think I may face the same problem with NChat?

Any post/reply notification mod?
Due to a pale grey background used in my site and to try and keep the look consistent throughout I am running into a problem with the color_online for regular members.
I have set all my post based groups to Black from zero post on up but the nchat code is returning white which I understand is the base color for regular members.
Is there a simple code change to pick up the post based colors rather than the member class color? Either that or just change all users to color #...... would be fine but I am having trouble following the query code?
TIA

?Help?
hmmh - seems like I've a problem with that mod (v1.3.2)...
I installed it sucessful (testforum (http://aida32-inventory.netboom.de/index.php?action=forum)), set all the permissions (also guests now are allowed to type sth.) - for those who may want a look to my testforum.
all features like show smileys, bold text, change textcolor, etc - all works - but when I click on send/save - nothing happen - the textarea appears blank - it doesn't matter if I am logged in as the admin, as a member or a guest...
I set all chmod like is shown on the first page....
Maybe someone could assist me - thx
cheers inti31
Addition: I tried that with FF, IE, Chrome - it raises the same issue
I faced the same problem and looked in the supporting website and her what the author of this mode wrote
I can say the issue due to your hosting config! Because I cannot run any test with your host, so:
Open NChatBoardIndex.php, Find:
Code: [Select]
xmlhttp.open("POST", nchatUrl, true);
xmlhttp.setRequestHeader("Content-type", "application/x-www-form-urlencoded");
xmlhttp.setRequestHeader("Content-length", param.length);
xmlhttp.setRequestHeader("Connection", "close");
Replace with:
Code: [Select]
if(load == true) {
xmlhttp.open("POST", nchatUrl, true);
xmlhttp.setRequestHeader("Content-type", "application/x-www-form-urlencoded");
xmlhttp.setRequestHeader("Content-length", param.length);
xmlhttp.setRequestHeader("Connection", "close");
} else {
xmlhttp.open("GET", nchatUrl, true);
}
it worked with me and other people.
the problem now it does not do auto refresh. users of the chat are not able to see other users comments only when they push a comment. not a
proper way to communicate. I tried to register there to explain the current problem but had no luck with the security question lol
http://thismod.com/community/index.php?topic=3.msg196#msg196
@BaghdadGhost - thx for that info - I removed that mod from my testforum
cheers inti31

Is there a way to add a space between the name of the poster and the message?
Now it's like this [time] noskos:text
But I would like [time] noskos: text
That way it's a little more readable.
Thanks a lot in advance,

I removed NChat mod from my SMF installation, and now the main page is blank:
If you want site link PM me.
Does someone has an idea whats wrong, even when I upgrade (again) to SMF 2.0.1 its still blank.
My defenition of blank: it only shows the header, not the categories and boards. :P
I have NCat running on my forum and it is causing a massive load on the MySQL server, such a big load that my host keeps suspending my site.
When I checked the stats it showed that NChat created over half a million hits in 8 days! Is that normal? And is there a way to make the load smaller and my host happy?
Thanks in advance!

You should try to remove the mod manual. For some reason the mode not removed in correct way!

NO, not just delete the folder.
Do some search about "manual uninstall mod"

Hi All
I am new to SMF I am really enjoying it :D
I have one problem though, I am trying to install NChat - Little SQL Save BW shoutbox.
I am using SMF 2.0.1, I download the package click install, results say all is ok. But it does not give me the option to install to my theme. Only the default and core are options to install too.
Hope someone can help, Thanks in advance

remove this //NChat by ThisMod.com out of the index.php file .
i have to say as you have made 727 post on this forum and your telling me you don't understand lmao haha
That doesnt work either.
I dont see any //text lines in nchat/index.php
You talk like you are drunk, that's why it's difficult to understand, regardless my amount of postings.
I have removed ALL occurences of //NChat but I still get the same error.
Pretty odd that you pretend like you found the solution for World Peace, not?
Anyway, I just removed the lines which show this error, just for testing. And now the chatbox seems to work. The only thing is that it doesn't seem to auto-refresh.

Maybe I removed them the wrong way any other help would be great
Since this mod doesn't seem to be supported anymore, I opened a separate topic for the refresh issue. Ofcourse removing these lines doesn't solve the problem, it just hides it. It works on my forum (but it doesn't refresh), but I can't guarantee that it works for others...

Well I've been using it for a few days now and I really like it. There just seem to be some minor bugs in the AJAX part, so we'll have to wait until an AJAX-expert is willing to have a look at it :)
With FireBug I noticed that I'm getting these errors :
POST http://www.hulpverleningsforum.nl/NChat/last.html 405 Method Not Allowed 1.23s
That's why I (and others) got to see this error "The ./nchat/index.php is now unavailable! Please contact admin forum about this issue!"
And that is odd, since the filenames are different...?

Before condemning the product which has been working very nicely for a lot of us you might like to take a look at what problems YOU may have with either your server/host or SMF install. Seems to me a lot of issues with nchat have been server/host and or bandwidth issues so maybe time to start paying for hosting or looking elsewhere?
Some of the last posts apart from being smoke and fog from OMGPeace make no sense at all to me and others.

Sorry? I see lot of complaints about the index.php error. Do all these complaints make no sense? As far as I know, my SMF install is ok, having no problems with other functions or modifications and my forum is running on a dedicated server. Also, I'm trying to get a bit closer to this problem, as I seem to be the first to report a "405 Method not allowed" error.
Someone is asking for a 'working' chatbox, well, there ARE alternatives, but I think this one fits best on my forum. I'm trying to place it on all pages, but first I have to make it collapsable, and the refresh has to work.
This looks like a nice chat box (I am looking for something simple).
Quick question: For a large board (we have 1 million posts serving 1.5 million page views a month), how will this compare to a AJAX powered or database driven chat box? Bandwidth is never an issue as we have unlimited bandwidth on a dedicated server.
Thanks
Mike
Hello!
I have same problem with:
The ./nchat/index.php is now unavailable! Please contact admin forum about this issue
all what was written here (http://thismod.com/community/index.php?topic=3.0#post_faq1) was done but nothing helped
maybe the clue is that problem was noticed at IE and Opera, at FF is all okay
I got it working
Try and rename all occurences of "last.html" to "last.php". THis should occur twice, in NChatBoardIndex.php and NChatHandle.php.
Thanks to my hoster :)
I did that also few minutes ago and problem still occurs.
I have installed Nchat and made the permission changes as the FAQ section directs. I still get the The error "./nchat/index.php is now unavailable! Please contact admin forum about this issue!"
Can not get Nchat to work, I suspect it has to do with the following that I get when I click on the Mute List Manager.
Not sure what else to do, have installed and reinstalled three times, all permissions in the CMod have been set.

I tried your changes and no help. I noticed an earlier thread that suggested changing all incidences of "last.html" to "last.php". They suggested changing the occurrences in NChatBoardIndex.php (1 occurrence) and NChat Handle.php (1occurence). That didn't help either. I noticed that in the NChat directory there was a file named "last.html". I changed it to "last.php" also and now it works!!! Thanks for responding!!!

I am using simpleportal 2.3.3 and would like to have this on the portal page as well. I have tried several different way's of adding a block to my site, but i cannot get it to work on my portal page. Has anyone come up with the code required to place this on simpleportal?
I have selected php block and added this:
require_once($boarddir."./NChat/NChatBoardIndex.php");
But all i get is a black box with the name of my chat box...........any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks
Can you insert HTML code in to your block? If yes...here
Create a file, let say name embed.php and but it in NChat folder
<?php
//NChat by ThidMod.com
require_once('../SSI.php');
require_once('NChatBoardIndex.php')
?>
After that insert an html code:
<iframe src="your-domain.com/forum/NChat/embed.php"></iframe>
I am using simpleportal 2.3.4 and that don`t work for me :( :( :(
When i installed it, all of this poped up...

Okay so I found a different chat i wanted to use and when i Uninstalled NChat then deleted it when i went to the home page i got this error

Hi!
I have a little question to this Mod.
I have installed it on a test installation of SMF 2.0.1 (local, in Xampp) a while ago, and it worked perfectly fine. Now, I would like to install it in SMF 2.0.2 (on my website), but it seems it hasn't been updated since 2.0.2 is out. Does it work with SMF 2.0.2 anyway? If not, when it's going to be updated?
if it worked on 2.0.1 then chances are that it will on 2.0.2 just use version emulate when installing it
if your unsure why not install 2.0.2 on your local xampp and test it?
I've just discovered the following error message when using Safari:
"The ./nchat/index.php is now unavailable! Please contact admin forum about this issue!"
I've gotten the error on different machines, so it's not isolated.
Help?
As I mentioned before it generally seems to be bandwidth or host related. It is not a browser or software fault. Occasionally it was turning up on chat before we migrated to a faster server and better plan.
Can this be run in a simpleportal block?
Thanks
Anyone get this to work on the 2.0.2 version?
Been trying to get it to work for days with no luck.
It installs
The package was installed successfully. You should now be able to use whatever functionality it adds or changes; or not be able to use functionality it removes.
Admin/configuration page works.
I get The ./nchat/index.php is now unavailable! Please contact admin forum about this issue!
I think this is permissions based as I haven't yet changed the permissions as required.
hi , is there possibility to insert pictures in chat and is there a log file ?

Hi guys,
i've installed this mod and it works perfect beside the sounds. i've all the sounds @/Nchat/sounds but i can't get it to work
No matter what Chat/ShoutBox mods i install, none of them will work. I can make someone (who knows what their doing) a temporary admin account, if they would be willing to install and get it to work for me. I want the best shoutbox that is available out there. . (I am running 2.0.2)
I want a shoutbox to be displayed at the top of the forum right below my "Home, Help, Search, Admin......." menu
Cant find out how to make it work with 2.0.2
Please help
When I click on Mute List Manager it show me an error:
Warning: Invalid argument supplied for foreach() in /home/ultrafor/public_html/Sources/Load.php(2432) : eval()'d code on line 247
How can i fix it?
Does this mod have an ignore feature for users? If so, how do you activate it?
I can not go to my admin section on the forum now, I get this error:

generally all you need to do is run the uninstall/then delete through the package manager to uninstall a mod
I also go to the server fiels and manually remove the files too that go to a mod. If you look at the install.xml file in the zip you will see what files were edited to manually make sure they were removed too.
Hi. Thanks for this mod.
Which files do I edit to make the whole thing smaller?
Also, is there any way I can move the chat to a different position? I would like it half the width and put alongside a leaderboard ad which is served from an ad manager. This is to make better use of the space.
Thanks! :)
I have smf 2.0.2 I tried to install this but it never showed up after installation.
I have ajaxchat, but not impressed with it.
Should I have uninstalled ajaxchat first?
It installed and working fine but i really wish i could disable that time thing and X thing that every message starts with ... anyone knws how to do that?
Carol yes uninstall ajax
what is the default time for it? i by chance removed it from the modification settings, now it just shows xx in the chat box and i dunno which format it uses.
Can someone please look up their settings menu and tell ?
Uninstalled ajax, but still not showing up
I get this error message

can somone pls look into their NChat and let me know what the default time format on this mod is?
Does it sometimes become unavailable too? Server down or something? It suddenly stopped working and for last 2 hrs.
No one knows?

Also, if someone can tell me where the coding for the color of the chat user name and time is located, Id appreciate it
For future development, it would be great if each user could turn the sound off and on according to their preference.
Mute List Manager didn't work. Can anybody help me? Please send me PM who now how to fix it?! Thanks.

Same problem again today ... just a blank white window for last few hrs ... no chat messages outgoing on incoming ...
@Saahilk2000: Same thing just happened to me. I have two sites that run the NChat, one is working and the other isn't, its really weird. So I think that may rule out a server issue or something of the sort. So if anyone knows how this could be fixed or whatever, it would be great, I tried to delete it from packages etc and got this error;
Fatal error: require_once() [function.require]: Failed opening required '/home/xwfmike/public_html/efeds.net/forums/NChat/NChatBoardIndex.php' (include_path='.:/usr/lib/php') in /home/xwfmike/public_html/efeds.net/forums/Sources/Load.php(2239) : eval()'d code on line 291
I put everything back together and it was fine, but the white box is that, just a white box. I'm sure I screwed it up myself in my case, so if anyone has any ideas, I'm all ears. Thanks!

Yeah its really weird .... last time it went off, it came back up after a couple of hours so i was under the impression that its a chat server issue ... but i guess that isnt really the case.
You know of any other chat mods that runs on a 3rd party chat sever and dont eat up the bandwidth?
No, I tried them all but the NChat is by far the best IMO. I would just try and wait and see what happens, who knows maybe in a few hours it will work. I have no clue why yours is doing it, I think my issue is with the error, but who knows lol

I am using the Chemical Theme. And just to make sure, it redirects you to the settings page, which would have the enable on that page, or somewhere else?

This is a setting, go to Mod Settings, Nchat, etc.
For the life of me I can't get the NChat to appear on all the pages of the forums. I know there is a way as I have it on my other sites but for some reason i can't get it to work out. Is there anyway that someone can help me here? I know that I have to edit the current themes etc but I don't remember where to remove things and than replace it.
So if anyone can help me here, that would be great. Thanks in advance!
Anyone know what I'm talking about? lol
I know what your talking about, Ive seen earlier posts about how to make the chat box available throughout the forums, but nothing much since SMF 2.0.2 came out, Im having the same issues trying to figure out what I can edit to hopefully let me do that.

Still waiting if anyone is out there to help me.
Question about mod, just a quick question. I have been seeing this mod in the Recent Unread Topics list quite often and I have been wanting to ask this. My question though, what does SQL have to do with bandwidth? Using a database over a flat file actually shouldn't increase bandwidth usage. The title IMHO is misleading as it tells users if you use a database your using more bandwidth, which is false.
I noticed that Nchat did not filter my censored words, although I tried different settings.
Then I edited .... Nchat/NChatHandle.php
I replaced line 107 function NChatParser($subject = ''){
with function NChatParser($subject){
Now NChat filters my censored words fine.
Soo....still nothing? lol

We assume that you have already installed the mod without any errors.
Try this way to desplay that in your particular theme:
1. Go to the mod Link (http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=2846)
2. On the upper right hand side you will find "Directions for manual installation"
3. Select your SMF version and click Analyse
4. Look for "
./Themes/default/BoardIndex.template.php" and apply all (there are only 2) "add after" to the BoardIndex.template.php of your particular theme.

Hi , I'm really liking your chatbox , awesome job !
but i got small issue with it
thanks in advance !
At the risk of appearing a touch heavy is/has this mod ceased being supported? Seems to be questions going unresolved (much as search might help a couple of them)?
I have run into a scrolling based issue but only on Chrome and Safari as a browser. Seems any time a post is made either by the user or another the chat scrolls back up 8-10 lines so the users are having to manually scroll back to the bottom :o
Anyone else having/had similar issues and have a fix for the formatting?

Not sure if your still reading here but yes it can be fixed but you will need to mod the nchatboardindex.php file. Not sure of your skills but adding a couple of selective <br> in the code after this bit " <div id="nchat_editor" class="windowbg"> " will help pad it out
thanks , btw , i dont have that scrolling issue u were talking about , using chrome
<div id="nchat_smiles"></div>
<div id="nchat_smiles_2"></div>';
echo '
[b]<br>[/b]
<div>
this fixed it , but thanks !:D
Not sure what the protocol is here but as this mod appears to have become an orphan of sorts :-\ Do we continue to try and keep it running and updates or just let it go?
I have been running a possible (popular) alternate in tandem with this one due to this and Nchat kicks it's butt for general operations. The others updates to shouts are flakey at best so unless a manual update is pressed you can miss the conversation.
In running them in tandem I have been playing with the formatting of the chats and bashed them into (what I think) a cleaner looking layout. Currently running new chats at the top right under the text entry box. Couple of screens below of the layout.
** Should mention that the upshrink arrows on the header are not yet coded but the link to opt of of chat is. Basically goes straight to select member groups which I have set up a special one for the boring members who don't want to play ;)
Still a few bits to tweak but if anyone is interested in a copy of my nchatboardindex as it is happy to pop a copy up here if that is kosher?
Hi nvcnvn, this your NChat is even good but unfortunately, it lacks some functions for excellence
It lacks:
Option which is possible to turn off BBCode: B, U, I, and choice of the list of colours
It lacks:
Option of history through which it would be possible to see entries in NChat which went down in history something in the style nneonneo's Shoutbox in history.txt to that history be saved somewhere on the FTP. This option is useful to the Administrator so that he can know what entries were on NChat.
It lacks also options:
Ban users/unban users, list of banned users
Turn on and turn off shoutbox
Change the name of NChat that it can set its own name
Of option "/clear" which is being sent as the message and it cleaning entries
Access only for the Administrator.
If this shoutbox give to another template let's assume for the dark colour is displayed on the left the white line
I marked on screen:
i49.tinypic.com/25oxcfr.jpg
There is also a white line at the bottom but I think it must be to indicates dissociation of chat.
You have to take a good look to notice this. On screen is little invisible
I think that these are all suggestions, you could enter them into the next version NChat?
hello people I got a problem:
my chat used to work very well but since a month or two nobody can see the content of the chat box which remains blank, white.
NChatMess.php gets however populated, as I read it via ftp.

i tried to rename last.html --> last.php (and properly modify any reference inside the two files)
tried to move last.html to other paths
tried to chmod it to various other values (666, 755, 777)
but it seems all futile
I am on a cheap hosting, so no chance to change any php configuration setting, how may I work it out?
Thanks...
Occasionally in the past the NChatmess.php has become corrupted so the simple solution for me has been to uninstall, reinstall NChat then recopy my modded NChatBoardIndex.php file back over the original.
Crude but it has worked for me.
As best as I can determine is seems to break after a user posts one or more really long chats either near or over the limit I have set. I have never bothered to try and debug it as it is a simple fix and the chat while really nice doesn't effect the forum.
Thank you very much indeed beanflying.
Any other suggestion whitout having to reinstall?
Only other one to try is to press the clear all messages on the chat itself but I have removed this from mine as the mods occasionally cleared the chat without meaning to :laugh:
It was discussed a few pages back I think as a fix but it doesn't take long to uninstall/reinstall.

Those are two messages founded in the Apache log, and there is a plenty of these!!!
What does it mean 200 415 & 200 359?
Hi, whether somebody knows how to place NChat be shown in the bottom of forum?
Behind the option: Mark ALL messages as read
Yep in BoardIndex.template.php in themes/default find
template_info_center();
and CUT and then insert the code from the top of that file (so remove from the top) to just before it.
//NChat by ThisMod.com
require_once($boarddir."/NChat/NChatBoardIndex.php");
That should get you chat before the info centre and after the Mark all ...... You could look at my forum but the the chat is there but hidden from non members.
@beanflying
Thanks for help.
Hi, I have a suggestion to next version of NChat (if will be) that you nvcnv would look it and my previous suggestions which I added higher.
I mean, that you nvcnvn entering that NChat after installing was shown in bottom part of forum behind the option: Mark ALL messages as read
Or allow that it was possible to setting it in bottom part of forum in options shoutbox (currently it isn't possible, but have to modify file BoardIndex.template.php)
My smileys arent working :'(. Screenshot red circles. The image url for the others is http://www.bunnyrabbitsex.com/http%3Cimg%20src=
Also why is it that when things are typed (I want recent to be on bottom) they stay hidden and I have to manually scroll? Or wait for it to attempt to scroll for me...can't it always be at the bottom and push text up?
EDIT: I fixed the purple thing, it's just smileys now :).
Scroll thing was a quirky one with 'some' (2/3's roughly) Chrome and Mac users only. Particularly bad when using tall smilies and it used to bounce the content up and not to the bottom.
I never did find a fix for it as at this stage it keeps coming up around the net as a quirk of those browsers (haven't found a fix). The fix for me was to reverse the message flow and place the text entry box at the to as per the picture on the last page. It did take a little getting used to but the members are fine with it now.
Smilies? Never had a problem with it I just have it set to SMF Smilies so unless your trying to use a different set to your forum it should work? Only other thing would be are some of your smilies non gif format?
They are set to SMF and they are all gifs.
Also can I prevent hidden smileys showing up please?
You would need to either rewrite the NchatBoardIndex.php to exclude them (never looked into doing it) or the simple thing (what I did) is just move them to a new (spare) smiley set and not use them or simply delete them.
I don't want duplicate smiley sets. We're supposed to be a professional forum and hidden smileys is a basic functionality of SMF.
It's a simple query change but I can't read your code at all :/.
I guess if you rewrote the smiley section with a different query in it you could certainly remove those hidden smilies. So I gather you want to keep a few special smilies for those who 'know' the codes for them rather than general members?Apart from one emticon (https://www.simplemachines.org/community/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.bestcafes.com.au%2Fforum%2FSmileys%2FLightB%2Fvomit.gif&hash=290c2395923173a485f72a611d1edce180bf2830) we have hidden for a reason of looks the rest are open and displayed to all. Otherwise all similes are for all members on the forum.
Happy to share my butchered NChatBoardIndex below for what it is worth. It comes with ZERO rights to grumble about it or what it does as it suits me and my forum ONLY ;) If anyone gets anything positive out of the recode then that's a bonus.
Most of the changes in the attached file relate to formatting and the overall looks of Nchat. I have stripped out some of the initial code too if your wondering, removed some of the mute, ban sections and some others. Unlike some of the other 'shoutboxes' available we run this as real time 'chatbox' so at times it takes 10-20 messages a minute at times and I haven't found any of the other mods available do this any better so I have stuck with what seems to be an abandoned mod. :(
Would love to see nvcnvn keep this upgraded if they have or can find the time again :)
The NChat is Unavailable is actually not a problem with the program but is generally a problem with your server or host.
As it uses bandwidth to keep alive for EVERY viewer of your page or pages it is on some of the freehost's in particular or budget host's won't have sufficient allowances for you to run it reliably. If you go back through this topic some users have actually had 'free' accounts shut down because of this mod.
Only setting available in the Admin area is the 'reload time' mine is set at 6000 mS (think it may have been the default) but you could try lifting this to 10000 to reduce the server load? The only other way to reduce the load is to make it viewable to members only using the permissions settings.
Danke for the file, will have a look. Where is the smiley query exactly? On my forum we hide the smileys not from the main set, so that they all display nicely. Some are rather large or animated lol.
Also some are just for admins.
Is there anyway we can set a post count feature.. I am finding more members are simply using the Chatbox and not posting in the forum...

In that case maybe rewriting the NChatSmilies.js and then set NChat to use the yahoo smilies in the admin or better make an additional option and set up a second file containing links to your own reduced set? Not perfect as it doesn't work directly with your hidden ones and your admins won't be able to use the specials either in chat.

No but keep the messages kept to 50 also limit the length of chats to 200 characters (or shorter) to stop lengthy messages or Q&A's and make sure your members are aware that it is transitory. After having lost several good items most members of my forum have now ot the idea that the good stuff gets lost unless you put it in a thread ;)
One of our members in particular did try and stir up some rubbish over the chat and how it was reducing forum posts etc. There has been no evidence of this after 8 or 9 months of use but instead we find some members checking in multiple times a day to see whats on chat and at the same time on the forum. More often than not the chat is now used for non forum stuff and more general chat on life etc.

Install the following mod (if you have not already done it)
http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=2323
It shows the time mods were installed in the package manager.
It also allows you to order packages in the package manager, by name or time of install!
Then check for the mods that you installed after the installation of Nchat, and especially those mods that you installed approximately the date that your Nchat stopped working.
Un-install the above mods in reverse order...
see if that fixes your problem.
You may need to Un-install and reinstall Nchat also.
Make sure that you have a backup of your files before making changes.

How was this possible again?
Today I started looking into different themes as per my forums 1 year anniverary and after installing a multicolor theme I had to uninstall and reinstall my nchat chatbox....Now this is what it says...
(https://www.simplemachines.org/community/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1058.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Ft413%2FILLUMIN-X%2Fchat.png&hash=af65217b791ea994836c00a077e18d68df3ee56b)
I've also discovered one of the php files wasnt in my original installation months back but worked without it (|.text) Other than that everything is CHMOD'd accordingly.
How can I get my chatbox back working ?
+ CHMOD 0666 for these files: l.txt, NChatMess.php, NChatMuteList.php
+ CHMOD 0644 for all the files left
+ CHMOD 0755 for these folders: ./NChat, ./NChat/sounds
By the way I always forget to add I'm using 2.0.2
With a PortaMX
Never mind..I found a way
CHMOD these files to 0644:
./NChat/index.php
./NChat/NChatHandle.php
./NChat/NChatBoardIndex.php
Hello,
i'm running this mod now for some months/years, but now i want i have 2 questions.
Is it possible to increase the "size" of the chat "windows"?
Or if not, is it possible to open the chat in an extra tab, so somebody can read it easier without so much scrolling?

Hi,
My SMF forum was moved to another server by my host and since then any UTF-8 code will be displayed as garbage, € will show up as â,¬, é becomes é. This only happens in nchat. I've replaced the files with the old ones same problem. I've reinstalled nchat, same problem. Is there anybody out there that might know a solution to this problem?
Thanks a lot in advance!

Nobody has an idea for my request?
Perhaps the author of modification NChat could write whether he going develop this modification because passed a lot of time from the passed quite a lot of time from the last edition of modification, it will be good this modification to adapt to the version 2.0.3
And whether he going to lead, these functions which he described, as for doing in the future
Future Developments:
+ Mute an IP.
+ Archive function
+ Channel chat (private chat with one person)
If an option of the private chat would be supposed to come into existence with one person, it in my opinion an option should be for the Administrator
in options of this modification in order entirely to exclude the possibility of the private chat with one person. Because not everyone of Administrators like things like this.
Whether somebody make out how I can place for myself in order to date which is shown in shoutbox after writing the message down, for example like this: [Jan 19 13:20:43]
That the date will be shown in other language than English. I mean that the name of the month is in other language than English, in language from which I use in forum, whether it will manage somehow to place?
I noticed the mistake of showing emoticons in Nchat
http://i45.tinypic.com/90r47d.png
Emoticons higher which is marked with red frame after sending her in the message is shown other emoticons, the one which is marked more low.
Is the author deigning to correct this mistake? Whether the NChat author will speak and will let know in relation to mistakes reported to him and the suggestion?

In NChatBoardIndex.php find this line :
<div id="nchat_admin_shoutbox" style="background-color:'.$modSettings['nchat_background'].'; height: 100px; overflow: auto; border-style: solid; border-width: 1px; border-color: #adadad; padding: 1px 2px 1px 4px;"></div>';
Or something like this, I've done lots of edits myself. Edit the 'height' property or you might want to add a button which allows the member to expand/collapse the window.

Is there anyway we can set a post count feature.. I am finding more members are simply using the Chatbox and not posting in the forum...
You
can set membergroup permissions for this mod, I think that is what he is asking? I've done the same on my board, too many low (of no) post members only using the chat, not the board itself.
I wonder if someone could help me with this mod. For some reason, whenever someone tries to post a smiley, the mod gets somewhat temperamental. Some smileys work fine while others seem to not work at all. Smileys work on all other areas of my forum, but here they come up as text.

Hi!
I moved my forum (SMF 2.0.4) to another server today and now the german Umlauts are not being displayed correctly anymore. The letters ä, ö, ü and ß will be displayed as ä, ö, ü, ß. I have checked the permissions of the files and all are correct. By the way, I can't find the file "l.txt".
How can I fix this?
Hello? No one has any idea to my problem? I don't want it to keep it this way, otherwise I need to look for another shoutbox mod.
I updated to the latest Tapatalk app (3.6.0) and now the NChat window is blank. When I uninstalled Tapatalk, the functionality returned.
Is there any way to get these two to play nice together?

I had the same problem and as far as I remember, I had to edit the install.xml of tapatalk.

I went into my admin panel and then tried to edit the Nchat and it was a blank white page. When I go to http://uohl.net/forums/NChat/index.php it still shows a white blank page. So I dunno what happened. This has never happened to me before and have no clue in terms of what to do to fix it. I tried uninstalling it and reinstalling it as well and still nothing.
If anyone knows of any ways to help that would be great. Thanks in advance!

Hey :)
I have an issue with the shoutbox vanishing, and discovered....
"Hmm. It looks like Chrome is generating errors every time it tries to update your chatbox. Chrome doesn't allow our AJAX calls to set the content-length, or connection header parameters as this can expose the site to certain security risks. See what happens when you comment out the lines in the script that set these values. ( at the bottom of the function nchat_ajax() function definition, just above the line function nchat_parser(nchat)"
Which is around line 142 of the boardindex file :).
http://stackoverflow.com/questions/17737344/my-shoutbox-vanishes-on-chrome/17737597
Is this just a shoutbox on top of the forum or does it also have a popup chat window/room too?
Just a shoutbox.
How would i go about adding custom Actions / Commands.
Ex:
/me
/action {another user's username or name} then it auto-puts a brutal attake like {Gets obliterated} so it will come out as "*Test1 gets Obliterated by Test2*"
/ Announcement It automatically puts first {Attention Faithful Users} then an announcement that the admin/moderator has typed... and it comes out as "Attention FaithFul Users, We Have Restored Security. -Staff
/Ban {User} so it bans the user who's name has been typed after the "/Ban" and in the shoutbox it announces "Test1 has been banned from the shoutbox"
then Private Messaging within the shoutbox.
SO if you put:
/Whisper {Users Username} {Message after the Username}
-It shows in the shoutbox as:
"<Whisper>{User who you PM'd name}: {Message Here"
If you receive a Private Message, only you will be notified in the shoutbox and it will say:
You have Received a New PM, [Click Here] to view it.
Last command i need...
If someone makes a New Post it will say something like:
"{User who posted it} New Thread: {Thread Title} <-- make the link clickable.
and if someone made a new reply it would be
"{User who posted the reply} New Post: {Thread Title} <-- make the link clickable.
If someone can help me with any of these it would be much appreciated.... Just tell me what codes to use and where to put them and i wont need any other help....
All i need to know is, where and how do i input these commands? What File, Before, or After or Do i Completely replace something?
// command /me

Where I can change color of user nick. Staff have color which is set in ranks but when typical user is green on forum in chat window is grey.
I get the same message.
Quotenchat/index.php is now unavailable! Please contact admin forum about this issue!
I only get the message when using Safari on an iPhone. Tested in FF on my PC and Chrome on the iPhone and it works fine.
Is some bug with banned of users when I clicking to ban one user it not banned from system but only that second, who wrote a message under him. Why it happen? Whether it is a bug from NChat or a bug from my forum? Even I uninstalled NChat and I reinstated a clear files, I installed NChat anew and this bug is appearing. I also noticed that isn't work ban when are using IE11, just can't banned a user.

Nice mod! Works great :)
Not sure this was mentioned yet, but there's a bug with emotes that if you have two emotes with the same image, one of them will always break.
The broken code looks like this:
<img src="http://domain.com/Smileys/custom/X<img src=" http:="" domain.com="" smileys="" custom="" xxdx.gif'="">
And a suggestion as well: Would be much better if the emotes used the emotes from SMF in the same way, such as same order, not displaying hidden ones, etc, because otherwise the emotes become a mess.
(As for why you'd have two emotes with the same image: Hidden ones with a different code for old users that prefer to type it another way).
I suggested that and no dice unfortunately. Agreed for the same reason: HUGE mess.
Yeah, I see someone mentioned the other bug a year back too :/
Well, I'm already planning on releasing a new version of this or making a new chat based on this later this year, if I can get this smiley issue solved I'll post the changes needed here, the bug should probably go with some bbc parsing as well (plus the other benefits :P)
Excellent, good job :D.
There seems to be a shortage of secure and working shoutboxes lately.
Yeah, was troublesome to find a good one. The first one I chose and adjusted, and as I found later, many others, have a crucial problem with the messages (they don't update if more than one window is open with the chat). This one is great on this aspect, at least, and the way it updates the messages.
I will probably make my own from scratch later on, but I'm not that advanced yet, so for now I'll just use the functioning of this one as a base and add some nice stuff in it :)
Mine doesn't even show if you're logged in. It's this one. No one knows why! It's a mystery ha ha.
http://stackoverflow.com/questions/17737344/my-shoutbox-vanishes-on-chrome
Could be theme related, could be JavaScript related, all kinds of reasons.
Yeah but I even paid someone and he couldn't figure it out either.
You have any test accounts there? Odd that its only after login though, could easily be related to something in php/template itself.
When we fix it via firebug or chrome dev thingie it works, but when the changes are implemented it doesn't work. Will PM you test account details :).
Yeah, looks like one more of those chrome bugs. Came across some similar ones on some other site I was making, same behavior of keeping the fix after a refresh as well :P
What did you try though? What I found was to add the position:
#nchat_admin_shoutbox {
position: static; }
Edit: Seems like its just the background staying on top of the chat, if the above doesn't work maybe trying to force it to stay on top by giving it a z-index will. (Still need to give it a position value for z-index to work though, it can be relative)
Nup, worked the first time it was changed but refreshing again killed it. z-index doesn't work either.
With changes directly to css right? (Yeah, some of these bugs act differently on both :P Just unticking and ticking back the background also solves this one, its just not working as it should)
Try removing the overflow:hidden here then:
.brscatinsides {
width: 100%;
/* overflow: hidden; */
This is odd, when I copied I saw it should not be getting to the browser, but chrome seems to be ignoring the comment there. Since it is a bug anyways, its worth a try.
Don't forget this stuff tends to be cached ;)
Its hard to find those, chrome "fixes" the bug on pretty much anything you change since it updates the page and loads properly then. But just to confirm, what did you use for z-index?

Already done that, it was suggested in the stack exchange. I've also edited the js about 40 times. It's alright, soon it wont even be there ha ha.
I don't think it has to do with JS, its just a classical chrome bug (get those all the time while making sites... :P Firefox almost never has these issues, bah)
I think if you remove that block inside the chat that has the background it won't bug anymore. Then just leave the main div for that part have the background, better way to do that as well.
QuoteIt's alright, soon it wont even be there ha ha.
Removing the chat/changing to another one?
I believe someone said it's still an issue on Opera, Safari, and Firefox so it's not chrome specific.
I'll be upgrading to 2.1 and I don't really intend on having one after that! :D
It was displaying fine on FF for me.
Ahh. I'll take a while to upgrade, as I'll only do so when I have all of the same modifications I have on 2.x now ready on the moment of the upgrade. And a big part of them are manual changes I made or mods that were manually installed or modified :P
Yeah it seems to be working now, only occasionally vanishing :D. Thank you!!! :D
My chat has no text appearing in the chat box, when i type it appears in the text bar, but when i hit save, nothing! Tried as admin and also a std user.
One thing i noticed is I have no l.txt file in the nchat folder.
Any support on this mod, still? I would like a dropdown box (like the color dropdown) which allows the user to select different rooms.

I'm not sure, but I think that is the error you get when you get a disconnected status, from a lag or problem on your internet, if it only happens sometimes. I might be mistaking it for another message though, they're similar, and I changed mine to be more clear :P

I'm getting it every 3 seconds after loading the page :-\
If it happens right after you install the MOD, check if
a) the file exists
b) the file and folder have proper permissions
If you can't fix the issue you should probably uninstall the MOD...
I've been using this mod for a long time now and really love it. But it is by far the most sensitive/breakable mod I've seen. Sometimes this error appears, sometimes the chat crashes due to special characters or too long line (still not know the exact cause), and had some more minor issues with it.
Be sure to :
+ CHMOD 0666 for these files: l.txt, NChatMess.php, NChatMuteList.php
+ CHMOD 0644 for all the files left

Think it could be a permission issue, as I'm on a windows host
So, I guess my question should now be, Has anyone got this running on a windows server, and if so how, as CHMOD is not an option?
I just got this to stop working giving an error on the chat window as well, seems to have been the versions of things on the server.
The host just upgraded php and some other things, it no longer works even at 777 permissions on everything or reinstalling.

This also occurs if index.php can't be found. Maybe you could try a relative path in stead of an absolute path?
I'm discussing it with the host now, it seems to be an internal server error issue, but it is not going to the logs and we didn't find what is it yet. Happens on any other chat too, only other chats don't give an error :P
Not working very well for me on SMF 2.0.9. Admittedly the mod doesn't claim to be compatible with 2.0.9, says 2.0.1 was last claim of compatibility.
The package installer said it would install okay, and it did. I CHMODed the correct files. The mod does work but I have a window tall enough for about 10 lines no matter what I set the #lines in the mod settings.
Other than that, it's functional, no errors. It's just useless because it displays so few lines. Oh well, guess I'll try another chat box.
It's sad that so many of them are for SMF 1.x which should have been killed off a year or two ago. There aren't any at all that claim compatibility with 2.0.9. Maybe all mod package authors are doing same as me, why update our mods over and over when 2.1 is coming out? (In September... maybe...) :)
I had this working perfectly (except for some other problems) in 2.0.9, so if it doesn't work its not because of SMF.
I don't recall this mod having any settings for height, I think what you're editing are the total number of messages that can be displayed at one time, the height you'd probably have to edit on the template or through css. It'll have a scroll bar if there are more messages, like any shoutbox.
The mod is useless if you have to go in and change code manually. That is the whole point of having a package installer.
It was a clean install test forum 2.0.9 with no mods installed. As I said, it worked okay. It's just that the window is too short to be of any use, displays only several lines of chat.
I'm not willing to go mess with the CSS. I have enough custom projects where I mess with CSS all day and all I want is a cheap, quick, dirty chat box for an insignificant forum in a far corner of the multiverse.
If the package installer can't install a functional mod package then IMO it's a waste of time.
So it is useless because the default height doesn't suit your needs? There are some other problems with this mod, but you're not going to get any mod to visually look exactly how you want it without having to edit it. This mod's purpose is to be a shoutbox. It is perfectly functional as a shoutbox. If you want to edit how it looks that has nothing to do with its main purpose (nor most other mods out there).
If you want to change visual or aesthetic things and don't want to edit the main thing that controls all of it then that's your own problem, and you're not gonna go very far in making your forum look how you want.
The point of the package installer is to do exactly that, install packages, not to edit them for you.
All my mods work right out of the box for SMF versions they are stated to be compatible with.
I just fell off the top 10 mod package authors list a few months back. If you have to edit a mod you wrote a crummy mod.
I'll grant that if you are running a custom theme you may have to edit, but this is a clean 2.0.9 installation, installed 1 hour ago with no mods and no changes from default settings.
Visual or aesthetic does not describe being able to see only 10 lines of chat. That is what I call dysfunctional.
I still don't understand if you're talking about chat height or total messages available, but this mod works right out of the box. You can increase the messages limit to whatever you like, I have 120. I don't see how scrolling to see them is a problem or "dysfunctional" feature, all chats are like this, and it has a good height as default, I didn't need to change it at all and wouldn't want to. It would be a problem if it was much smaller or much higher than what it is.
Sure, it has some annoying bugs, but they are not related to the messages themselves, which work just fine if it installs correctly.
Anyway, if you're up to spending 5 minutes editing the files instead of complaining I modified this to be expandable and to be resizable, so you can resize the window to whatever you want, as well as some other improvements (instead of having a chat be 30 lines in height and occupy all the space and be annoying), I can put the modified version here.
Scrolling them IS a problem. Look at the same mod for vBulletin. It shows maybe 20-30 lines of recent chat. For a vBulletin equivalent look at ... damn, I couldn't find a forum with vBulletin running their chat that the chat is visible to guests.
Nobody is going to want to scroll up and down. That's what I call dysfunctional. Hey don't listen to my opinion, I'm just an inexperienced guy with 20+ mods.
Sure it has annoying bugs. I can't disagree.
I'm working 10-12 hours a day 7 days a week writing code for other projects. I just want a chat mod that installs and works without debugging it.
If you wanna give me some advice I'd appreciate it. I'm running 2.0.9 with Curve. If I could make your mod work with a few edits it would be great. It's a private forum. It doesn't have to be pretty, it just has to be functional. It has to have maybe 30 lines or so of back chat.
The real problem we face here at SMF, we have to compete with vBulletin where you pay lots of bucks for the software and more bucks for the mods. But the mods look good and you don't have to mod them a lot to make them work.
I'm involved with several vBulletin forums and I've collaborated with writing private mods for them, but glad I"m not interested in running my own vB forums. SMF works fine for 2-3 person forums or small private forums. This small private forum (about 50 members) needs a chat box to make it go, but I need some sleep to make me go.
And then I get up tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow and write more and more and more code. I just don't have it left in me to fix SMF mods although oddly I wrote a new SMF mod today. Maybe it will be my new mod. Maybe it will put me back on the top 10 list. Maybe I'll just forget it. I guess I'm just getting jaded writing code for about 70 hours a week for the last 4 months.
All I really wanted was an out of the box working chat box for 2.0.9.
There's a real opportunity for somebody who wants to make their mark as a mod package author. After running through all the 2.0.9 compatible mods (1) and the rest that might be compatible (several) none of them worked out of the box, and I didn't have the patience to modify them when I have paying jobs lined up, plus an open source project that depends on me alone to keep it alive.
These chats are meant to be small. In fact, I've never seen a chat much larger than that anywhere. Be it on random sites that have a chat, on other forums that come with it, or all the other shoutboxes. I've also never seen anyone complain about it. This is a problem just for you.
It should have a way to resize, I agree there, and is what I did on mine, but it would be very annoying to have a large chat on top of your index. You don't make a large chat if you're putting it inside a page that is meant for another purpose because it'll eat the space of other things and be an eyesore for anyone not using it.
This chat works out of the box for everyone, like pretty much all others on the mod site. The height not suiting your personal needs does not make it dysfunctional.
For the files, just replace this file on the nchat folder. I had to remove some of the modifications since they are specific to my forum, but it'll have the resize.
Then add this to the index.css file:
/* Expandable boxes base code */
input.trigger, input.trigger + label + .tab-content {
display: none; }
input.trigger:checked + label + .tab-content {
display: block; }
/* Chatbox styles */
.chat-smileys .tab-content {
position: absolute;
border: 1px solid #b5ddea;
background-color: #dfeef6; }
.smiles-select {
padding: 6px;
width: 160px;
height: 200px;
overflow: auto;
bottom: 15px; }
.chat-smileys {
position: relative;
display: inline-block; }
Just change the height/width if you'd like. Again these are made for my forum, but its blue so it should be OK with curve.
Okay, thanks for the help. I'll give it a try.
BTW I got the "Helper of the Month" award too, I think was just after God invented dirt. ;)
I used to spend hours here each day answering questions just like you. My pictorial went away when I joined SMF staff, and when I departed they never put it back, not that I care whether mine shows.
No problem, you're welcome :)
I used to be able to spend all day working on building entire wikis, but now I'm limited to helping occasionally when I have the time, I guess we all end up being too busy with one thing or another at some point :P
Did all that wiki work drive you wiki wonky? ;)

The mod is useless if you have to go in and change code manually. That is the whole point of having a package installer.
...
If the package installer can't install a functional mod package then IMO it's a waste of time.
That's your point of view. Yes, not everyone is supposed to have any PHP knowledge. But for myself, there are not many mods which I haven't modified myself, just to suit it to my personal needs. This really is (in my humble and personal opinion) by far the best chat mod I've tried. It has some downsides and added some DB-queries to make (my) life a bit easier, but I can't do without no more :)

I installed this but only admin can see the shoutbox and I can't figure out why
You should set permission for each group that you want them to see the chat box
Everything seems to be working great - but we've noticed that newly registered users can see the chatbox .. There is no where in the SMF Permissions portion of the Admin Panel to edit this group to prevent this .. Help???

I've found a little work-around for this, but is there a way the settings could be fixed for those with no primary membergroups?
My workaround: I created a group and titled it 'Newly Registered' and have set the permissions for 'Registered' to use its own set [versus its own set or borrowed from another set]
(https://www.simplemachines.org/community/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi.imgur.com%2F0Cdpgsh.png&hash=2242b99b64e72b749233107da44c883a1a80e47e)

This work-around actually didn't work after taking a closer look ... Setting it to 'deny' and matching the uneditable permission set of 'Registered' with it prevents everyone except Admins from being able to use the functions ...
Can anything be done about the 'No primary membergroup' permissions?
Blah - disregard the above ... Series of brain farts .. Flatulence cleared up; "Regular Members" in the Permissions settings is the "No Primary Membergroup" set, I removed the couple masks that were inheriting from it and fixed up nchat permissions to the 'X' column .. Everythings all good and working very properly ..

NOTE
+ CHMOD 0666 for these files: l.txt, NChatMess.php, NChatMuteList.php
+ CHMOD 0644 for all the files left
+ CHMOD 0755 for these folders: ./NChat, ./NChat/sounds
You have to set the permission for each group after install the mod! By default just admin can read, write and manager the chatbox.
What about Windows servers, as I understand they don't use CHMOD?
So right now I just get
QuoteThe ./nchat/index.php is now unavailable! Please contact admin forum about this issue!
in the chat box
I don't see a "l.txt" file to set a permission on?
using 2.0.10
Also have a member reporting they can see the message then it disappears and is replaced with:

1) I had the same problem. To my knowledge, after searching on my host, there is NOT a "l.txt" file.
2) The "... now unavailable was corrected by setting the permissions.
REALLY REALLY make sure you set permissions EXACTLY as instructed.
I have the following themes:
SMF Default Curve (of course)
1038 {Fresh Look} (NOTE: This is my default theme on the forum)
Havvo
Fumes (this is the one I use)
When I installed, it
only offered Havvo and Fumes as the additional themes to install on (Fresh Look just wasn't there).
After installing, I set the permissions, and then went to manually modify the file for the Fresh Look theme.
Once I got to the Fresh Look folder I discovered that the files for NChat were present.
Went back to my forum, change my theme to Fresh Look and there it was, and fully functional.
NOTE: You CAN use html code in the "Admin Message". Here is what I was able to do.
<font color="#808080"><b>Welcome</b>! <u>NOTE:</u> This Chat is <u>NOT</u> private! All members have access. Bad word censoring is turned on.
<font color="#808080">makes the text dark grey, <b>turns on bold, </b>turns off bold, <u>turns on underline, </u>turns off underline, and " " = inserts an extra space.
Be Well,
Siirist
I decided to give this mod a try again, and I was surprised that it worked fine right out of the box on SMF 2.0.11 !!!
I did some tweaks on it to make the appearance more pleasing to me. I got rid of that admin bar thing. I changed a few text messages (like the button you push to send a line now says "Send"). I changed the CSS around a bit, changing some of the spacing that didn't appear right for me. Made the chat box a bit taller to show more lines.
I was a bit amused to discover the mod uses a flat file (NChatMess.php) to store the messages. I'm not sure that is more efficient than SQL or not. Perhaps later I'll just mod the code and stick the messages in a SMF setting. Perhaps I'll just tell myself it doesn't matter. :)
Everything considered, it's not a great mod IMO but it's not a bad mod either. There's a few bugs like the smileys get pretty crazy if you show them and then hit 'more.' Big smileys in the first row seem to overlap the B I U and text color etc. It would be nice if the button toggled to "hide smileys" when they are being shown, but a page refresh will do that too.
If I were the author I would check the 2.0.11 compatibility box. I tested it first on a clean test forum (no mods) and when I was happy with my modified NChat I installed it on my pre-production forum (8-10 mods written by my favorite mod author :) ) and no interactions observed. This is the best chat or shout box I tested and I've decided to stick with it for the time being. :)
Oops I spoke too soon. After I put it in production I noticed after a time you get this message:
"The ./nchat/index.php is now unavailable! Please contact admin forum about this issue!"

I keep getting
The ./nchat/index.php is now unavailable! Please contact admin forum about this issue!
:o
I'm not sure, but I think that is the error you get when you get a disconnected status, from a lag or problem on your internet, if it only happens sometimes. I might be mistaking it for another message though, they're similar, and I changed mine to be more clear :P
In reading the back topic I see I'm not the only one. First of all, I think at least I'll change the message to "Please refresh your browser to update the chat box."
IMO it probably has something to do with the update/refresh cycle but I haven't dug into the mod that far yet.

Not sure this was mentioned yet, but there's a bug with emotes that if you have two emotes with the same image, one of them will always break.
The broken code looks like this:
<img src="http://domain.com/Smileys/custom/X<img src=" http:="" domain.com="" smileys="" custom="" xxdx.gif'="">
That's one of my critiques too, that the mod doesn't respect the "hidden" attribute of smileys. And as you said sometimes you hide smileys to cover changed codes that break old uses of that smiley. Might be a solution to create a separate smiley set just for the mod.

just installed yesterday, i need this working!
Error: The ./nchat/index.php is now unavailable! Please contact admin forum about this issue!
Lots of problems with this one. BTW I'm using FF. I have a suspicion the cause and solution will be found in the JavaScript. I'll pore over the JS and AJAX and see if anything stands out.
It's clear this is a persistent problem for many and should be solved. As it stands right now this chat box is the only mod that comes even close to being acceptable. Many are suffering even if infrequently, so it's important to figure this out. I'm pretty good at this (and rather immodest) and I'm practically certain this can be solved. At least for the time I think I'll change the message to "refresh your browser" LOL!
I think I found a fix for the "Error: The ./nchat/index.php is now unavailable! Please contact admin forum about this issue!"
In NChatBoardIndex.php,
find:}else if(show_err == true)
nchatOutput.innerHTML = "<div class=\'errorbox\'>'.$txt['nchat_index_unavailable'].'</div>";
replace:}else if(show_err == true)
window.location.reload(true);
In other words, when there's a problem don't just complain about it, do something about it! Like if your house is burning down, don't shout "Fire!" Go grab a water hose!
NChat obviously recognizes it has a problem so you see the message. My fix simply reloads the whole page. The problem is gone after the page is reloaded.
I used to see the problem often before my fix, but I haven't seen it since. Please post your experience with this fix if you try it.
By the way, I got NChat working... Sorta... The biggest problems are:
1.) It shows the time in forum time, doesn't display time in each member's chosen time zone. In my case I picked GMT (UTC) for forum time because it's the default that makes the most sense. (Sure must be nice to live in England.) So if you want to see when what lines were sent you have to do a mental conversion from whatever time zone the forum's default is, because unless you live in that time zone it doesn't show your local time. This is by the way caused by storing the messages in a flat file where you can't change the flat file time stamps for every member's preference.
2.) I got it looking good after I removed the pointless Admin message. I tinkered the CSS, removed the scroll bar, hid the overflow. Without that, once the box fills up with new messages on bottom, each new message causes a scroll with the new message hidden. My fix works in new messages on top and overflow hidden. Looks barely passable. I'd be happier if I could get this to work new messages on bottom, but couldn't. Maybe add an event and scroll to bottom might fix that.
3.) The whole concept of storing the chat in a flat file NChatMess.php is lunacy. Like, your HDD is faster than MySQL running in SSD? Like there aren't already a zillion things in SMF's database and a few lines more used for chat is going to bring the whole forum crashing down? And what's with that last.html??? Is it storing the time of the last entry? That can't go in the database??? OM*G! ---- This mod comes so close, and its author obviously spent lots of time writing it, but he never finished it. (And obviously doesn't intend to, hence the GitHub.)
4.) There's a vBulletin chat box mod that stores ALL chat history back to the when the mod was installed (or when the admin last cleared it). Users can modify their own line after posted. They can even go back weeks and change old lines. And you can read the back chat as far back as you want. Moderators can edit all posts. And much more.
NChat will have to do for the time being, until I either find another mod, find some external chat that can be integrated into SMF, or when I write my own. Heh, too bad you can't port vBulletin mods to SMF. :D
ok there is a way to view this via forum/NChat/index.php?action=room but its the same size as the shoutbox above the forum.. is there a way to make this larger and not affect the one on the forum?
Thanks
Excuse me not reading the bajillion posts in this thread. Is there an easy way to make this appear if the user picks unread posts. Please forgive me for not being a PHP or theme expert.
Ok, I figured out how to put this on every page but I'm not sure I want to do that now, I may get smacked for being annoying. I have 1 constructive suggestion. PLEASE put the permissions for this under a separate subheading. I looked forever for them, they shouldn't be in General in my opinion. I've uploaded a screenshot that shows how SMF Gallery has done them. Thanks.

I'm saying it may be hard to get support for this mod from the author.
You can't see mods settings or chatbox itself?
The mod is quite outdated now, and won't work with newer php versions (7.3 or so), so it may be better to use different chat/shoutbox mod (there's few available on mods site).
offtopic but aren't you using tinyportal? pretty sure it has a built in shoutbox

I couldn't see the box.
I think way back I had tinyportal but didn't use it. My forum was sitting 'in a box on the shelf' for almost a year before the group decided they needed it.
Which php version you're at?
Like I said the mod is not built to work with newer version of PHP, 7.3 included, so that would be what is causing the problem most likely. I would suggest moving to alternative, for example:
https://custom.simplemachines.org/index.php?mod=2534
https://custom.simplemachines.org/index.php?mod=1295
yeah, took it off.
looking at tiny portal, but holy crap that's a lot of feature for what I need.
hahahaha yeah tp has a lot to it and when I first installed it thought I wouldn't really use it much, but over time as I've learned more about it I've found it extremely useful...still learning my way around it and what all I can do with it. Originally installed it just for a login/user panel but over time I've found so many other helpful uses for it esp the articles part and playing with custom codes to display in blocks on the sides and footer of sites :)
but gonna shush as I'm off topic in this thread, but you can install tp and just not use anything else other than the shoutbox if you so choose.
AYE. thanks.

How does the articles work? I mean, what actual content goes inside those? format?
I was only looking for a long (left margined) shoutbox to satisfy the ADHD users, but a spot for articles could be nice.
Does TP show on mobile devices? that's a lot of compromising on a small screen.
That's really a questions for a mods support topic for TP, not this one.
