The most common reason for the MySQL server has gone away error is that the server timed out and closed the connection.
If you have many users the connection can fall, or the server limits the number of emails that can be sended by one hour...

This just happened to me.

Does anyone know if half the people I was sending to would have gotten the email and half wouldn't have, or if it fails like this does that mean it was never sent at all?

Edit* Just checked my spam folder and have a couple of bouncebacks of email addresses not existing anymore. Done some extra reading and it seems my host (1&1) only allows 99 emails at a time to be sent... so I guess it sent 99 and then stopped there. I guess...

As mentioned already, that error is from the database server itself - and not an SMF errormessage as such.
