I'd have sworn I used to be able to change the poster's name on posts, but I can't see now where to do it.

For example, Mary makes a post, but it really should have been made by Jane. Rather than deleting the post, isn't there a way the Admin can modify the original post and change the poster from Mary to Jane?

I am running SMF 1.1.13

there is no way to do this by default, you would need some type of mod to do this. I dont off hand know of any mod to do this.

I've been searching for just this trick.

Please see the mod 'Post_and_Change_as_Alternate_User.zip'

I just found and installed it. No instal issues in package manager and it works a treat in 1.1.14
