I went through the steps listed here http://docs.simplemachines.org/index.php?topic=5 however i am stuck on this part :
LainaaAfter uploading the files, go to http://www.yourdomain.tfl/smf/install.php (or the directory name you choose). If the first page comes up with a dialog requesting FTP information this is because you are running on a Unix-like server. At this stage, just enter in your FTP details and the install program will attempt to set permissions on your server accordingly. If, however, you wish to do this manually or this initial step fails simply connect to your server with your FTP client and change the permissions on the following files and directories to 777*. On most client software, this is achieved by right clicking on the files you wish to change, and going to Properties, CHMOD, or Permissions, and then typing in the number.
here is a picture of the error message that comes up when i try to install :
do you know if your server offers a mysql server? have you asked your host about this message? I am not sure if anyone here can help you ask we dont know your server configuration.

Thanks for your reply i contacted my host and together that issue has been solved . however i encountered a new error message :
"Critical Error!
The installer was unable to access the "smf" database. With some hosts, you have to create the database in your administration panel before SMF can use it. Some also add prefixes - like your username - to your database names." How do i create a database in my host for SMF ??
you would need to ask your host as each host does things differently.
- Log into your hosting control panel.
- Look for something called "MySQL".
- Most of the hosts provide something called cPanel as their hosting control panel. If you go under "MySQL", you will find out that it will ask you to create a database and a user. They normally have a video tutorial which you might want to have a look at.

Yes, I am been utterly busy with my real life. Apologize for not getting back to you. :(
i am a newbie at this so i wouldn't want to tamper with the wrong stuff lol . when chmod'ing
attachments , avatars , Packages , Packages/installed.list , Smileys , Themes , Themes/default/languages/Install.english.php , agreement.txt , Settings.php , Settings_bak.php , install.php to 777 or 755 , do i set all permissions or do i just leave it they way i met it ? image below :
????????
please do not bump within 24 hours we are all volunteers. i would set all permissions as the installer wants, which should be 777 or 755 or similar depending on your servers configuration. How do I chmod? / what is chmod? (http://docs.simplemachines.org/index.php?topic=477.0)

just to be sure i understand what you are saying , are you saying i should click on the"set all permissions " button or do i just leave the already selected / checked box how i met it ?
if you wish for smf to be able to install mods it is best to have permissions at 777 or 755 if possible, this is given that you have a secure server and no one outside your server can access your files.

hmmm... you still haven't answered me :( , do i click on set all permissions to 777 or 755 yes or no ? or do i just use the default / already checked boxes ? (take a look at the image i uploaded earlier on )
default is what your host suggests not want smf needs/wants. i have answered your question, but not knowing exactly how your server is setup i can not tell you which permissions will work best.
i followed the steps here http://docs.simplemachines.org/index.php?topic=5 , i chmod'ed like it was instructed and i have installed SMF however in my congratulations / 100% page i got a warning .
Your installation directory is still writable. It's a good idea to chmod it so that it is not writable for security reasons
pic attached . What did i do wrong / how can i make it not writable

Via FTP, CHMOD the directory.
If it is 777, CHMOD it to 755.
If it is 755, CHMOD it to 644.

You did nothing wrong, and if your server is secure it doesn't really matter if it is writable - but generally it is recommended you chmod them not world-writable when they don't need to be :)
