I cloned my forum.
My forum is
http://united-tutorials-registration.com/
I backed up Database
I made a sub domain
http://testforum.united-tutorials-registration.com/
Copied the whole forum to the directory "TestForum"
That works fine for the portal but when I go to forum or in to admin pannel of the test forum to put Database back I go to the Admin pannel of my Real live forum.
How do I change that?
What is repair_settings.php? (http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=18096.0)
Thanks, I changed all url's with the repair_settings.php
But I'm still doing something wrong, there is still a connection with the original forum.
I see users online and when I remove my avatar it is gone on the original forum to.
It looks like all you did was clone the files... did you clone the database too? You'll need to point your clone at the cloned database too
I have taken a backup of the database and that is ......_smf1complete_2011-05-19.sql file.
But I'm not exactly sure were to upload that file.
Do I just put it in the testforum dir?
Does it need unpacking to?
you need to follow these directions, but upload the database to a different database from what your main forum is using, then use repair settings again How do I restore a database backup? (http://docs.simplemachines.org/index.php?topic=490.0)
ok thank you I'll read that tomorrow, have to go to bed now it's half past one AM over here.
So good night. :)
I contacted my host, I have the PHPMyAdmin but can't find correct password to enter it.
Thanks for your help.
do you have cpanel (http://x3demob.cpx3demo.com:2082/frontend/x3/index.html?post_login=17750771329471) or similar?
yes I have cpanel.but that password don't seem to be the same as for the PHPMyAdmin it always says "login failed"
click on "my sql databases"
I'm clicked on it see the databases there.
I have 2 forums and a clone.
Forums are smf_1 and smf_2 already there.
I presume I have to create a new databas smf_3 ?
You can name it whatever you want
If I made a new database but I think I have to see that there is a user for it.
I made new user and now I assigned the new user to the database,
I get a new window about privileges I assume I take all

That's a nice tutorial for someone installing an SMF Forum for the first time but it doesn't say anything about how to clone your live site to a test Forum. I don't think I've ever seen a step by step tutorial anywhere on here that tells exactly how to do that. It would be nice if someone would do one.

Its basically the same procedure, apart from you need to take a backup of your forum files and use them instead of the install files you can download from here. Upload them into a folder called "clone" or "test" or whatever on your host.
Take a backup of your forums database, then create a database as per the tutorial and import the backed up database into it thru phpmyadmin.
Well, actually I know how to do it. I've done it many times. It's just that if a first time user of SMF wants to do this, it would be nice if there was a guide for doing it. One that would include such questions and answers that most of us already know, like ...
1. After I clone my database and Forum to the test site, will all my themes still be there?
2. Will all of my Mods still be installed on the test Forum or will I have to install them again?
3. Does it matter which version of SMF I use to clone my live site to the test Forum?
... and so on, and so on. In other words, things that most of us here know but that a new user would have to play the 20 questions game in order to figure out.

feel free to make one, i did, im not a staff member or anything, i just made it coz i wanted to.
I appreciate that aishaweb. I suppose I could do one sometime if I get some time but I would want it to be as comprehensive as the guide you did (with images and everything) and geared towards a new user who really doesn't know much about SMF and databases. I would have to try to think of all the questions that a new user would need to know in order to do it. The one you did is very nice. ;)
I just hope photobucket dont remove the pics, i cant remember what the password is or what email addy i used to sign up with...
Well, off topic but yeah, I did that too and had to reset my Photobucket PW a couple of days ago myself. Of course, I knew which EMail addy I had used to create the account so it was easy. :D
I made the new database but can't figure out how to get the backup in the right place.
Thanks for trying to help me I leave the rest to my host I think.
I finally found PhpMyadmin in the control pannel and I am now uploading the file to the new database.
I hope it go's well now.
Going to walk the dogs in the mean time. almost time for bed to.
yes I did it thanks for al your help.
I was trying phpPGadmin by mistake thinking it was phpmyadmin and couldn't get in that.
this evening I saw my mistake and then it was very simple.
And how do members set forum language?
in their profile.
yes found it now, had to install other languages first before that option was available.
