Ok, don't panic, I'm talking about my test forum so it's not my live, important forum.
However, this morning when I try to log on, the test forum a) constantly tells me i have used the wrong password and I know I haven't and b) when i click on 'admin' it logs me out entirely - in fact, it logs me out entirely when I click anything like the gallery or shop buttons. This morning I managed to get onto the admin page once, but when I clicked on 'current theme' to change something, I was logged out again.
I'm not sure if this has anything to do with the problem. Yesterday I worked on the test forum for a while (wantsome.co.uk/forum2) added a new theme but nothing spectacular. Then last night I cleared my browsing data (using google chrome). This morning when I logged on, I noticed the banner had been changed (to a banner from another theme). Although idk if that's significant.
I'm on SMF 1.1.13
Edit: Also, when I log on, it shows me my chosen theme on the index page (with the wrong banner). When I click anywhere else (e.g. onto a thread or board) it switches to the forum default them (smf default) and I'm suddenly a guest?!

Thanks HunterP
That topic says it's for version 2.0 and i' on 1.1.13, though. Will it still work?
Update:
Nevermind! The forum miraculously fixed itself. I'm going to say it's because SMF is brilliant.

Ok, so unfortunately it still isn't backported :(
I accidentally deleted my admin account, what do I do? (http://docs.simplemachines.org/index.php?topic=466)
Lost Admin Password (http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=327793.0)
Does this help you?
EDIT: ok :)
Thanks again, HunterP. i'll bookmark this page in case it happens again.
Hi everyone (and HunterP if you see this!)
I'm re-opening this topic because it's happened again. It seems to just randomly occur.
1) I open my test forum (www.wantsome.co.uk/forum2)
2) I type in my admin username and password (correctly!)
3) It tells me the password is incorrect and asks me for the password again.
4) It logs me on and shows me the board index page of the forum.
5) I click on anything (a board, a category, admin, gallery, shop, my profile, anything) and it logs me out - suddenly I am a 'guest'.
I never got around to using the topics HunterP recommended above because my board just randomly started working again. However, I don't think they would help anyway because I haven't deleted my admin account.
I might just run repairsettings again to make sure I haven't ballsed something important up.
Make sure you're using a different cookie name for both of your forums. Also make sure you are using the right URL... you seem to be linking to www.wantsome.co.uk, however your boardURL is wantsome.co.uk (without the www). Be consistent or you will have issues.
Thanks SlammedDime, i'll remember to link without the www in future.
I'd really like to check if I have set the cookies differently, but I can't get onto my admin page since I'm being logged off. I've cleared my cookies and cache etc, but the problem persists...
I go to http://wantsome.co.uk/forum2/
It tells me it's in maintenance mode
I log in and get http://wantsome.co.uk/forum2/index.php?PHPSESSID=d1831879d69e2863fe51a6aaf634fa72;
I click on 'admin' and get http://wantsome.co.uk/forum2/index.php?action=admin but I'm logged out and back to the 'welcome guest please login and register', 'forum is in maintenance mode' page
Is there a fix for this or am I looking at going to a back up?
I believe you'll need to disable subdomain independent cookies. SMF is trying to set the cookie on the co.uk domain, which isn't going to work, it needs to set the cookie on your whole domain.
There are a couple of things you can try...
First, disable cookies in your browser; this will force SMF to track your session via the PHPSESSID in the URL and it might allow you enough access to adjust that setting above.
If that doesn't work, you can try repair_settings.php. I'm not sure if this can be fixed with repair_settings.php though...
f not, you'll have to go into the database to the _settings table and manually change the value for subdomain independent cookies.
Thanks again, SlammedDime.
It turns out you can set a cookie name with the repair_settings.php (I ran it after I posted above). It gives you a recommended cookie11 or something and i just changed it to another number. This seemed to fix things enough so I can log on, and I've immediately gone to disable subdomain independant cookies now.
Should I leave the subdomain independant cookies disabled forever?

This is exactly the problem i am having here i am new to SMF and how things work so not very clued up to what is been said above but everything thats been put here is happening to me, i log in i click anything im logged out again its driving me bonkers
My site is a new one and no members i am just setting things up but not getting very far due to this problem
any help please
Hi Snooks.
I'd say before trying all this try to delete your browser history, cookies and cache - idk but sometimes that's the issue if you're flicking between forums like me.
I'll tell you exactly what I did and hopefully it'll help you. I'm no expert either, but this bit is pretty simple.
1. I downloaded repair_settings.php from http://download.simplemachines.org/?tools and then uploaded the file into my forum directory via my cpanel.
2. Then I accessed the url of the repair settings file. My url looked like this - wantsomeco.uk/forum2/repair_settings.php Your url will be your normal forum url with the repair-settings.php after it.
3. The page that opens gives you a whole bunch of your current forum setting, and below each one is a click-able recommended setting. I clicked on all the recommended settings but changed the cookie to a different number (because SlammedDime's advice in this thread led me to believe that it was a cookie problem - your problem might be different).
4. Upon accessing my forum I got a message to say delete the repair_settings.php because while it is there it poses a security risk as other people accessing your forum could access these settings. So I deleted the .php file from my forum's directory in my cpanel.
Upon accessing my forum then, everything was fine, and the issue hasn't cropped up again since (2 days and counting!)
Hope that helps, snooks!
If you were using the same cookie name for your main forum and the test forum, as well as using subdomain-independant cookies, then you could be asking for trouble -- cookie confusion, as two forums are trying to use the same cookie.
It could be that changing the cookie name is all you will need to do.
WantSome -- does that solve the problem?
Snooks -- if this does not solve your problem, please start a new topic. This will help the support specialists give you the support you need.
Thanks
Sorry my problem is solved, it corrected itself somehow :)
I'm glad it works now. If you have the problem again, please start a new topic and someone will find you.
