Otsikko: a simple upgrade question
Kirjoitti: Kilgore Trout - kesäkuu 10, 2011, 09:17:19 AP
My apologies for such a simple question.  I have read the upgrade faq and it is clear about backing things up, downloading the upgrade files, extracting the files but then I can't figure out where to place the extracted files on the smf site.  The extracted files have similar directories to the base forum page so that couldn't be the spot.  Can someone please tell this confused soul where to upload the extracted files prior to chmoding and running the upgrade.php?

Many thanks.

KT

Thanks very much for the very quick response.  So the files and folders are simply loaded into your original forum directory and I assume that when they are loaded they simply overwrite what is already there.  Thanks for the clarification.

One more question.  Does loading in the new directories delete your old contents?  I have a ton of smilies and if I upload a smilies folder isn't that going to wipe out what I have there?

BTW - I am now using 1.1.11 and slipped by not automatically updating to 1.1.12.  Need to get back up to the latest 1.1.13.

It does overwrite your smileys.

Irritating, I agree.

But, there you go.

Of course, you don't HAVE to overwrite them. ;)

Thanks K.  Can you simply not load the smiley directory?  Would that impact the update?  Now I see that they are up to version 1.1.14.  Will I need to go from 1.1.11 to 1.1.12 to 1.1.13 then finish with 1.1.14?  I noticed that 2.0 gold is out now.  Is there a path to upgrade from 1x to 2.0 gold?  Maybe that would be an easier path for me?

Thanks for any help with this/

Hello there Kilgore Trout.

If you want to save your smileys you dont need to overwrite that directory, and you can proceed upgrade process without problems.
If you running 1.1.11 or 1.1.12 smf version you will have to use large upgrade pack for 1.1.14, and if you use 1.1.13 you can just use small update pack (or just click on link provided in admin panel).
However if you wish to upgrade to 2.0 version, you can do it by download large upgrade pack for 2.0 version (given on download page), and proceed with upgrade process.

Thanks for your feedback. It seems that my best bet may be to go to the 2.0 upgrade.  Will that overwrite things like smilies, mods, themes etc?  I am assuming I will be able to go from the 1.1.11 to the 2.0, yes?

The mods and themes, you will have to update them, if a new update is available.

Large upgrade pack will overwrite all files, so i would suggest to save smileys to your computer before upgrade, or simply upload everything from large upgrade except Smileys directory.

And of course, make sure that you have fresh backup before doing large upgrade, just in the case...

Some file managers and FTP client programs will merge the content of both directories where they are no conflicting file names. If your ftp client/file manager prompts with a merge option. It's safe to select that and proceed with the upgrade.
