Title: 2.0 Final has been released
Post by: Norv on June 11, 2011, 07:43:37 PM
Simple Machines Forum Team is proud to announce the release of the long awaited SMF 2.0 Final version to the public.

This release marks the transition of SMF 2.0 into the current stable release of SMF, as well as the rebirth of the SMF project as open source software, as it was meant from the start.
As of now, SMF is licensed under the BSD License (http://www.simplemachines.org/about/smf/license.php).

Also, SMF 1.1.14 was released, addressing a vulnerability found in SMF 1.1.13 allowing display name spoofing as well as fixing a MySQL 5.5 compatibility issue. We strongly recommend that all users of 1.1.x line to upgrade as soon as possible.

For users of SMF 2.0 RC5, this release consists primarily of several bug fixes - most notably it fixes the login protection and possibility of real name spoofing. These issues have serious security implications, and we urge users to upgrade to it as soon as possible. For users of SMF 1.1, the changes between 1.1 and 2.0 are too numerous to list here - but we're sure you will be pleased with the new features SMF 2.0 has to offer.

The following are the more important changes and fixes since SMF 2.0 RC5:

For a complete list of changes, please find the changelog as usual, on the downloads (http://download.simplemachines.org/) page, and the list of known issues in SMF 2.0 (http://wiki.simplemachines.org/smf/Known_issues#Known_issues_in_SMF_2.0_Final) in the Online Manual (http://wiki.simplemachines.org).

With this release we'd like to take the opportunity to recognize the effort and dedication of all the people who have volunteered their time to help the SMF project. We would like to thank everyone, past and present, who has contributed to the development of SMF over the past years.

Finally - please do not use this topic for support requests. You will get a much quicker and better response by posting in the relevant support board!

Regards,
Simple Machines Forum Team

You will have to use large upgrade package in order to perform the upgrade. The patches as we do for 1.1.x series are mainly for stable releases. The further updates for the 2.0.x branch or 2.x branch whichever is decided by the developers will be patches which can be used within the package manager to update. SMF 2.0 RC5 -> SMF 2.0 GOLD will be only via large upgrade. :)

Title: Re: 2.0 Gold has been released
Post by: Adish - (F.L.A.M.E.R) on June 11, 2011, 08:52:02 PM
Well, we had a statement in red saying "This version of SMF is in development! Please do not use it on a production website!". It has been like this since the Beta release of SMF 2.0. A few patches were released considering the circumstances, however, that will not be the case with this one.

Your custom code will be gone, but the entries in the database should still be there. So, that should get you back rolling as soon as you place the custom codes are back into the files. ;)

Now, how long till the svn is public access? :D

Awesome work! Sadly for now I will probably stick to 1.1.14, though, because I worked quite hard on some of my forum themes, so I would rather wait until there's a 100% reliable 1.1.x to 2.0 theme converter.

I'M glad it'S finally out, though. Good job SMF team :)

A big kudos to the past and current SMF team! It was a long tough battle to get through, but with a little persistence you all managed to make the release of 2.0 finally happen.

I know people will already be thinking ahead to the future at what comes next, but please take just a moment to appreciate the product we have now. It appears to be stable, secure, fast and customizable with a large selection of mods and themes contributed by many people from the community and SMF team. Most important, SMF is free, and it always will be.

It was a good time serving the SMF team for many years and I couldn't be more happy signing my name to finalize the transfer to an NPO. I think Simple Machines will have a bright future to come. The BSD license change will likely make things interesting and exciting for years to come!

Best of luck! Here's to 2.0!

Unlikely... The theme system in 2.0 is significantly different and has much less "code" in it. 2.0 themes try to focus on the template and not on the functions.

Honestly, that is very unlikely to ever happen. However, since most themes are really fairly minor changes to default (images, css and index.template.php being the most common) it isn't all that hard to recreate a 1.1.x theme in 2.0, as long as you have some basic coding knowledge and a bit of persistence.

You'll probably find that most mods which work with RC4 and RC5 will also work with 2.0 Final, as long as you use version emulation. If there are any which are particularly important to you, set up a test site running 2.0 Final and try installing your mods on that first.

Sorry my Russian. ;)

The help on the wiki hasn't been translated into all languages yet. If you want to go back to using the old system until the wiki is translated, install this mod: http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=3043 (http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=3043)

You will still be able to get the old Russian help files to go with that mod.

ETA: Third link is to the license itself.

Stupid question: What it's BSD?

Better answer:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Berkeley_Software_Distribution

BSD is an OS, not just a license. As someone who has run FreeBSD servers since the mid-90s, I felt like clearing that up. :)
Title: Re: 2.0 Gold has been released
Post by: Norv on June 12, 2011, 10:38:52 AM
BSD License is the license that started on FreeBSD. ;)
Title: Re: 2.0 Gold has been released
Post by: Kindred on June 12, 2011, 10:40:38 AM
But we do not care about the os...   And rather than confuse people with pointless information that has no relation to our release, we clearly stated what the term BSD was, in relation to the release of SMF and use of the term.

Yes, Owdy has a better link. :) It's not a big deal, just wanted to clarify as saying "BSD" and "BSD license" are not the same thing. It'd be like referring to the GPL as "Linux". ;) Not trying to confuse.

Cheers...

there is no package manager upgrade for 2.0 and will not until the next security release. therefore there is no way to upgrade and not effect your mods already installed.

Well, it's not like it's earth shaking (asteroids time is past now), however we don't really name our official topics that way, it slipped in the heat this time, because hey, we need our fun too.  O:)
(j/k btw)
Either way, it wasn't entirely consistent with our other official announcements titles and releases, so when we started to breath again we thought that generally it may be better to stick to those. Or try to. :D
(I know, I'm not fun.)

I think this may explain it better:

Great news on the new license for the final version!  You have been years ahead of phpBB in terms of features and usability for quite some time but were hindered from becoming the dominant PHP bulletin board script because of the old proprietary license. Now we can all use SMF as it truly is an open source licensed project.  :)

Thanks all

Outstanding, glad to see it! :)

I'm pretty familiar with the 1.xx versions (maybe even very familiar) so I did a lot of custom tweaks to that version...and so now it looks like maybe I gotta start all over again figuring out how to change some of the internal bits. :) But, from what I've seen it includes a fair number of the custom hacks I normally did, so maybe I won't need to fiddle with it as much.

I've been waiting for this and kept telling people, "It's coming, it's coming..." lol. Some of my friends started referring to SMF 2.0 as the "Duke Nukem" release.

Lol, I *really* took a lot of ribbing when Duke Nukem was actually released a few days ago . :(
But here we are with 2.0 available, and from the reviews for each product I'd have to say that SMF 2.0 has been received much more warmly and enthusiastically than Duke Nukem was. :)

Anyway, congrats again to the whole team for all the work they did and for keeping SMF at the forefront of open source forum software. Truly an impressive project in many ways.

Cheers!

Ah, I see. Thanks for the explanation. :)

oh, pshaw.... the original license never hindered anything except for people who insist that the GPL is actually worth-while (it's not).
The old license hindered quite a bit.  I get the impression you are equating GPL with all of open source when in fact it is merely one license of many available.  GPL bashing comments like the one above will not endear this software to the open source community.  Instead of bashing GPL (and by association open source) it should be the primary target for new marketing efforts.  Doors that were previously closed to the project are now open thanks to a licensing change and instead of walking through them you appear to be egging them.  :o  I hope to see the spirit of the new license adopted in the policies and behavior of the project as a whole for a wonderful new addition to the open source community.

Thats the thing, we all like Open Source - Some of us just don't think Open Source = GPL.
It doesn't mean GPL is not Open Source, it just means that we preferred BSD License over GPL, while still embracing the ideal that is Open Source :)

and SJR... my statement was that the ONLY people "hindered" by the original SMF license were those who wanted some integration with a GPL product which could not allow an exception to the silly clauses in the GPL that tried to make everything else GPL.

BSD is a better choice for an Open Source product since there are no silly restrictions (hence the reason we chose it)

That is exactly the intention on many levels. Though we may have different opinions on what that means. :)
Anyway, choosing BSD as license is simply and purely because we believe in people's right to choose what to do with their own code build on SMF, instead of restricting it - in any way. This is particularly important for SMF, since extensions to SMF 2.0 are, currently, mostly as packaged source code modifications. Licenses "in the copyleft camp", if I may say so, would have had impacted them. BSD lets people free to do whatever they choose with their code built on/based on SMF.

SMF is open source, today, open source as in free to use, modify, build on, distribute with or without modifications, without imposing a constraint on the license to the code added/created by people on SMF.

   SMF 2.0 Gold is Fantastic~!

To everyone who has ever contributed to SMF...

Thank You for this fantastic FREE Forum Software that helps people all around the world to communicate with each other. I know that MY Life is enriched because of SMF.

Thank you to the Staff who have ALL probably worked harder, and longer than they ever thought was possible, and given the best they've had to give. There are always differences of opinions, but in the end, what is best for the user has prevailed. Not every good idea becomes successful, but through your persistence and dedication, your excellent work will continue to serve the world as SMF's creators envisioned.

If every problem was worked on as diligently as SMF 2.0 Gold has been, there would be far more successful ventures in the world.

For the moment, let us celebrate, toast the efforts and accomplishments of many, and upgrade our forums so that our individual forum members can enjoy the fruits of SMF 2.0 Gold. Let us help each other in the spirit of good will for a time... Then we can begin again to think... Hmm... if only this could... I wonder if... What would happen if... and I bet it would work better if... leading us to strive to improve this software anew.

There are sure to be good things in the works, for talented minds cannot be still for long. I look forward to the next level of SMF accomplishment, and the next, and the next.

Hopefully the Mod and Theme Wizards will quickly busy themselves making magical upgrades for their older work and plotting new and exciting functionality for this awesome SMF 2.0 Gold software. Those of us who are skilled in adapting software should be more appreciative of all Mod & Theme makers. THEY make the salve that allows everything to work 'just right' no matter WHAT we try to do with SMF. So "Thanks in Advance" for weaving your magic for us.

Thank you also to the SMF Support Staff who will be striving to answer our questions and cries for help over and over and over again during the coming weeks as we non-geeks struggle to upgrade our forums to SMF 2.0 Gold. We KNOW we ought to 'get it', and we try, but often fall far short. Thank you for being patient and respectful no matter what. YOU are the ones who ultimately  help us to make the connections which allow many of us to webmaster our forums when everything is said and done.

Cheers all around.... CL

Wow.  I'm almost speechless.  Almost.  Again, the old license hindered the adoption of SMF more than it helped it.   I did not "want some integration with a GPL product .." so what could possibly explain why I did not use SMF then?  According to YOU there is NO OTHER explanation.   ::)  Could it be perhaps that I believe in the open source ethos and wish only to use and contribute back to projects that are free1?  Pshaw... can't believe I wasted the last 20 years helping to make free software (Apache, Mozilla, Debian, Ubuntu ...) better, I must be an idiot. Nice marketing technique you have going there, insult a potentially huge new skilled user base.   :o

It hindered those who wanted to redistribute the software.
It hindered those who wanted to release themes outside of the official customisation site. (Yes, Bloc and all the others were illegally distributing themes at their websites!)

So it's great that now it is truly FOSS licenced!

How did you pull off the BSD licensing? That's the holy grail, and I was starting to think the power struggle was going to thwart that. This is excellent news, and will ensure that SMF remains the best forum software available.

I just noticed this and thought I should point it out:

The SMF licence is not a standard 3-clause BSD licence, because clause 3 restricts you from not only using the name of Simple Machines to endorse a modified distribution, but also to restrict you from using the name Simple Machines Forum itself (effectively clause 3 is part of the trademark policy.) To be most accurate, SMF has a BSD-like licence, not a BSD licence.

Well - that's a technicality that can be argued, since the actual mother organization is Simple Machines, and the project organization is Simple Machines Forum, it is still the organization in question - Also, only Simple Machines is a registered trademark, Simple Machines Forum is not. http://www.simplemachines.org/about/trademarks.php

Awesome.
But where can I find some info on what the major differences are from 1.1.xx which I'm currently using?
Mainly in terms of the look and feel my users will experience.
I'm using the plain vanilla theme and everyone knows and likes it, so am a bit hesitant if 2.0 looks and handles significantly different.
My forum is here:

Thanks for the continued dedication and hard work. I run two SMF 1.1.14 sites and look forward to upgrading to 2.0 Gold.

I am a true newb and have only used the package manager for my upgrades in the past so this will be a bit of a learning curve. Time to dig in I guess. I starting to read the upgrade procedure and got to PHPMyAdmin and CHMOD and the question marks started to pop into my head. I run my sites at GoDaddy and used their 1-Click installs. (That is how I discovered SMF). Anyways, it looks like I have some work ahead of me and need to start my learnin' proper.

Purpose of this message was not to ask for support, it was to congratulate the team. So, to all of you, good job, have some Champagne and celebrate the fruits of your labour. I will be off in the corner trying to get meself smart and stuff so I can use the cool new version. :)

So, that should get you back rolling as soon as you place the custom codes are back into the files. ;)

You are absolutely correct. You did have that disclaimer on all the beta releases.

But do keep this in mind. You had that disclaimer since, what? 2008?  3 years?

So in effect, for all that time, you were telling us to use some other forum product if we ran a production web site??? Or were we expected to keep using the 1.x version while other forum products moved ahead with solid new releases and modern popular add-ons?

I know you guys have struggled with internal issues and dissension... and all of your efforts and certainly the forum product itself are greatly appreciated beyond words. But your loyal fan base has also struggled with you. And if at all possible, I think making a 2.0 RC5 to 2.0 Gold Manual Update File available would be very much appreciated by those loyal users who have stuck it out and keep the faith in both you guys and SMF.

I can't give you any real numbers as to how many of us have used the 2.0 RC versions for active forum websites. I could make one up, though... but lets just say "lots". Lots of us have heavily modified 2.0 RC5 sites. And if most of the changes to the final Gold version are, as advertised, security and log on fixes...  a manual update file would save us a ton of time. Think of it as a reward to your loyal and faithful community.   ;)

The needs of the many...  (all of us)
Outweigh the needs of the one(s).  (the poor smuck(s) who have to write the manual update file)

I upgraded, but my theme is incompatible and I can't seem to find a simple way to write a new one...
Will have to hack up a 2.0 theme somehow, wish it had said this on the upgrade.php everything else worked well
Thanks!!!

Maybe 2.0 > 2.1 will get an package manager update?

minor bug updates and security releases get a package manager update.
It is unlikely that major upgrades will ever be viable candidates for the package manager.

I'm sure that the package manager is pretty much able to handle it.
I mean, take the MAP3 Mod Manager besides the SMF Package Manager -- SMF's one owns a big deal. And even the MAP3 mod manager is able to do a big upgrade.

being able to handle it and the team taking time to create it and test it to make sure nothing goes wrong are 2 different things, it is MUCH easier for the team to release it the way it does now and not worry about the package manager missing something, or a mod someone has installed breaking the upgrade process with the package manager which could happen easily.

Pegasys,

Allow me to give a little example. With all due respect, please compare for yourself:
- work on preventing possible data loss on people's forums on a couple of conversions
- work on forum affected by a pre-1.1.8 security issue on unsecured hosts.
- work on coding and testing a tool for forums on 2.0 to have
- work on language files that international forums use
- work on a security question that came to me, which proved to be absolutely false. But I had to be sure - on my time.
- work on reviewing SMF 2.0 API provided by a third party
These are only a few of the things I can tell *I* personally worked on for SMF users today - only today - and just about every day is like this. (and there are a couple other things)

Versus:
- leaving these not done, to give time instead on some convenience package with ALL files edits (no, not only a few fixes were made, ALL files changed versions and format of versions, and it's not optional because version matching algorithm changed in 2.0 Final), and test it for thousands of forums, and that, disregarding the significant additional support load it would bring anyway?

What do YOU think I should choose to spend my time on? :)

We have documented for people to know how the upgrade works for Final. The same way it always did, for beta/RCs:
- with brand-new files uploaded,
- a script you just run,
- and all your data safe.

Your data is safe, I can tell: I worked on the upgrade and tested in dozens of scenarios.
Your mods data is safely stored in the database, I can tell: I worked on package manager, we tested it with hundreds of unit tests and manual functionality tests. (I'm not exaggerating)
All you need to do is to reinstall the mod packages, so they can make their file edits, in an automated way, through SMF's package manager.

With all due respect, I have no time - for the next 2 years at least - to do that for you. Sorry.

The needs of the many vs the needs of the few? Thank you, I don't think so: I think, not to sound rude, that much more would be affected if I hadn't chosen to do the above, on critical matters for people and their forums.

HOWEVER, what I can - and do - is work on the future SMF, its code, its architecture, its planning, its development tools, its organization, to change some things to be even more seamless and user-friendly... including package manager of the future SMF. Now that the 2.0 release is out. But about that, in an upcoming blog. ;)

For now, SMF 2.0 is out there and is finally Open Source, available for people to use, modify, as they need or want to. Please feel free to use it or not, as you see fit.

Sorry, I was not really aware of that :P

(as a side note, wouldn't it be cool if SMF had a tool that automatically downloaded the upgrade files and replaces the old ones? Not sure if webinstall does do that)

That would be a sure way to screw up people's installations, since it would then replace SOME files modified by a mod and not others. I other words, lots of fatal errors as mods break left and right.

No, I mean, a fully standalone tool (else I am already aware of the problems it may or may not cause), that first deletes the files, then redownloads them.

But let's first focus on further development, nice tools come afterwards.

A simple no would have sufficed.   ;D

In fact, already got one or two...    ;)

Fear not. I fully realize how much effort goes into such a large endeavor as this. No need to explain or justify. I was just running the idea up the flagpole to see if it would get a few salutes.

Because I found both 2.0 RC4 & 2.0 RC5 to be stable enough for production... they are in production on a few sites. I use a lot of mods and modify a lot of code directly to accommodate each site's needs... and have historically appreciated & relied upon manual update files for version updates. Without them, the update process is obviously much more time consuming. Heavily modified or just mods added, without a manual update file, the site has to go off-line or be recreated in a test environment.

Not your worry. I understand you can't support modifications or even packaged mods. But a documented list of the code changes would have been nice. I will still manually update... by comparing files and updating code as required... and manually making any database changes found in the install script. Same method I used bouncing from one RC to the next.

Thanks again for all your time and effort on this. It IS... very much appreciated!!

All mods and themes will no longer work after updating to 2.0 unless there are 2.0 compatible versions of them which you would need to install.

2.0 has more features, so I highly recommend you upgrade to that. All posts, attachments, users, etc. will be left alone. You will have to reinstall any mods and custom themes after the upgrade (though 1.1.x themes will not work with 2.0).

I need to verify every software license by itself and eventually contact and collaborate with them, but the short answer is: SMF 2.0 is open source software today, in OSI sense, with a permissive license, BSD-family, which is GPL-compatible.
So yes, there are far more possibilities to bridge with other open source software, than it used to be under the old proprietary license.

Just wanted to say congrats to the devs that put in all the work. My 1.1.14 board is so customized that it might be some time (if ever) that I move it to 2.0.  I have a suspicion that every mod I have will not be compatible; although, some may no longer be needed.

What I may do is create a completely new installation under a different sub-domain in its own folder and get it to where I want it. Once everything is working, point the original forum sub-domain to the new folder.

It's probably answered somewhere but is there a post and user import feature where I can point it to my separate 1.1.14 board install if I do this (this should probably be a new thread)?

Mark --   no...   there is no "import"

As with all other major upgrades, you overwrite the 1.1.14 files and run upgrade.php on your 1.1.14 installation to update to 2.0. There are ways to do similar to what you are asking, but you are correct, that would be a new support thread.

Thanks. Yeah, I'm not installing 2.0 on top of my active 1.1.14 installation. That's just asking for trouble LOL.  Now, I may copy the whole 1.1.14 forum into a new location, copying the database as well, and then upgrade that forum just to see what a mess, if any, is created by doing that method. Anyway, if I have any more questions I'll make a new thread.

Just thought I'd mention that I successfully upgraded a copy of my 1.1.14 forum to 2.0. Thanks to the developers for writing such a robust upgrade script.

Now the really hard part comes in.  There's a few mods, like the Color & BGColor Bar that will not install on 2.0 Final. Seems 2.0 went really heavy on the JavaScript.  Who knows how much work getting my own customizations back in will be as much of it had to do with the post editor. Since my main forum is still running 1.1.14 and functional, I can take my time. :)

Then I started to upgrade to 2.0 RC4 and after this Release I did all the upgrades to this final Release! Also thanks to the people who suported me with mods after the upgrades.

What is the planning in future with SMF? Is this stable finish the last station or is the team going to work at further Releases in future?

When will they have the Babylon theme fully ready for the SMF 2.0 Final version?

That was the previous default theme for SMF.  I really liked that, much better than the new Curve default theme which seems some SMF/phpbb hybrid in appearance due to the less sharp "watercolor" look.

When will they have the Babylon theme fully ready for the SMF 2.0 Final version?

That was the previous default theme for SMF.  I really liked that, much better than the new Curve default theme which seems some SMF/phpbb hybrid in appearance due to the less sharp "watercolor" look.

It wasn't the previous default theme- that was the Core theme, which was rather sharp and boxy. Babylon was the one before that again and only default in SMF 1.0(Core was default in SMF 1.1).The name came from one of its contributors was called BabylonKing. (or something similar, been a few years ago)

Core:

Babylon isn't included in SMF 2.0 as Illori mentions - but Core is. Curve wasn't added in 2.0 either until RC2.

Very good. Upgrading from RC5 to Gold with the small upgrade package was a cinch. :)

Also pleased to see SMF has finally moved to an open source licence. Great stuff!

My board was first on xsorbit SMF 1.0.5 and the theme was Bablyon.  Then I moved the board and upgraded it to the 1.1.x series, but still kept Babylon as my theme.  I have screenshots of both Core and Babylon for my board but I'm reluctant to post them since my board is a private board.

I don't like the Curve theme at all with how blendy it is.  It's really too bad there's no Babylon theme for SMF 2.0.  The Core theme is better than Curve, but I still prefer Babylon.  Any theme that was good enough to be a default theme at one point should still be an option, and not phased out by some marketing department.

I regret I switched over to SMF 2.0 before SMF 2.0 got a Babylon theme.  I know the security is better, but the upgrade still feels like a downgrade due to the look.

There might be, assuming someone wants to upgrade it. It's not used much anymore, so I don't see much demand for it.

Mellow, have you looked at the theme site at all? Maybe you can find another theme there that you like.
Title: Re: 2.0 Final has been released

MellowMarcello, until a better solution is found, you can try this.

Babylon and Classic were included up to 2.0 RC3. So, you can download a copy of 2.0 RC3 install files (http://download.simplemachines.org/?archive;version=54), install in another dir and database in your server and copy the babylon (and maybe classic) dir to your working forum.

Another trick if someone wants to upgrade from 1.1x and has a 1.1 theme that can't be found for 2.0. BEFORE upgrading to 2.0 final do an upgrade to 2.0 RC3. The theme files will be changed, not a perfect 2.0 conversion but something better to start with.

This converter as well as Babylon and Classic themes was abandoned in 2.0 RC4 and later.
Title: Re: 2.0 Final has been released
Post by: Illori on July 03, 2011, 04:16:55 PM
there have been several theme changes since RC3, so those themes may not work on 2.0.
Title: Re: 2.0 Final has been released
Post by: Kindred on July 03, 2011, 04:34:16 PM
as a matter of course, Babylon will NOT work fully on 2.0 final. and the converter never worked very well, which is why it was abandoned.
Title: Re: 2.0 Final has been released
Post by: agridoc on July 03, 2011, 05:18:39 PM
It might work well enough for MellowMarcello. If no error messages are present and no safety issues exist he may choose to use it, as I stated, until a better solution is found.

For the converter I wrote "not a perfect 2.0 conversion but something better to start with". It will really gain time, even changing string variables is a headache without the converter.

Err, actually, I never proposed either to leave out the babylon/classic themes. And they were there when I worked on Core, but not when I made Curve. The team decided it took too much space, so the "marketing dept" had really nothing to say about that... ;D

Its sad no-one too he time to update it though, its a real gem.

It wasn't so much an issue of space as of time and resources. Frankly, we were so busy just dealing with getting Curve and Core sorted that nobody had time for the other two, and given how few people are even interested in them it just didn't make sense to waste time on them.

A bit sad, because Babylon was indeed a innovative theme, and still is in some ways. Classic is just that..classic. I will have a look at the RC3 version, though no promises.(and if it ain't up to speed with the 1.1 version I will def. use the 1.1 as a start instead)

The Babylon theme has been around a Long time now and many users find it friendly and reassuring. To not only change the fundamentals of the whole forum plus it's looks can be a bit of a 'ground shift'  for many of the 'old boys' that use my Forum. I'm sure many forum users around the world find it easier to cope with it it "looked the same" but had different functionality, rather than 'Looks AND Feels different'  all in one go.  Remember, Babylon was the default or preferred theme for years and for millions of SMF
user around the world.

I for one, am happy to contribute to a fully functional Babylon theme for 2.0 Gold.

Everything has its charm and its time. Always hunting for the latest and greatest is one of biggest flaws in our soceity, IMHO. Those themes are good designs, they just aren't "the latest". I would recommend them before several of the "new" Curve alternatives any day.

There, I got to say something important today too lmao ;D

Oh I'm all for quality, and it can be from any era. The thing is that those old themes don't appeal to me at all. It's largely to do with the palette. They give the feeling of sitting in a rubbish dump on a cold, grey day: thoroughly dismal.

Of course, I'm the sort of bloke who likes Art Deco and thinks Bauhaus is crap. ;D

I agree that in terms of design in general Babylon is a classic. Not sure about the others.

It doesn't have to be in tables, its a look like every theme so the coding could/should be more semantic correct. Which is what I aim for though.

A number of replies were split and moved in a non public board for further discussion. However I believe something and a solution must remain in public until a better public board and way is found.

Integrating basic user help with SMF structure, as used so far, is far superior, as it uses the forum's default theme and so is better help for the end user.

SMF Wiki help uses screen captures. This means a lot of unnecessary work to be done for different languages and the end result will be inferior for the user of a specific SMF forum.

For most foreign languages, current basic user help state for 2.0 is back to early 1.0x versions when not many translations were available.

Fortunately, as Gary informed, there is a mod that restores the feature back, so, until a better solution is found

Quote from: agridoc on July 30, 2011, 01:29:32 AM
This mod is a welcomed go back move to the online basic help system of SMF until 2.0 RC4.

There are ready translations in older language packs. Unfortunately 2.0 RC4 language packs adopted the new SMF Wiki help a little before RC5 release so, unless someone has an older 2.0 RC4 language pack, 2.0 RC3 language packs must be used (http://download.simplemachines.org/index.php?archive;version=54), they are the most recent available.

Take Manual.[language].php from translation pack, rename it to ExtendedManual.[language].php and upload it to /Themes/default/languages.

"Extended Help" mod is not a exactly a mod, neither a new fearure, it's a restoration of an existing feature that was stripped a little before 2.0 RC5 release. An overenthusiastic but wrong move as I see it.

I believe that SMF should go back to this system, this is basic user help and should be available in SMF installation. Read this and related messages before.

Quote from: agridoc on July 29, 2011, 05:07:41 PM
Quote from: Gary on July 29, 2011, 04:28:09 PMThere's a mod that'll revert the help backwards to RC4's local method somewhere on the mod site.

Thank you Gary, it's Extended Help (http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=3043) mod by SMF Customization Team (http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?action=profile;u=1) , that makes it an "official" mod. That also means that quite a few find the old way better.

So, bringing back Manual.[language].php and basic user help in SMF files and adding a link like "SMF Wiki extended help" is the best way. "Extended" goes for Wiki, as this will be the full documentation when finished.

Can only agreed(and have already said what I mean elsewhere), the choice of Wiki as the help feature was very unwise, for the reasons you mentioned.

I don't think anything will change though, it seems this was done to relieve some work - even if the drawbacks are bigger than the advantages lol:

+ centrally located docs
+ no need to administer submitted work from translators (though CompuArt's editor is there to help with that...)
+ more targeted software for actually displaying docs(which is really a design question around the Help.template => solvable)

- more server stress
- NO docs when server is down
- existing work not updated into the Wiki yet, due to lacking manpower?..and
- previous translators feel their work was "wasted", thus perhaps reluctant to contribute to the Wiki?
- No way to keep docs in sync theme-wise, which was cool to show off features in other themes as well(well, partly anyway)
- SMF site is not Google, so we can expect delays, especially as SMF 2.0 get more spread and updated around the world.

I was one of the more vocal tea members speaking against that move in the first place, and I still agree with you guys that we should've kept an offline help section available, and could have expanded that with links to the wiki where suitable.

The reason that wasn't done is still beyond me, but I believe there were views that the existing help section was outdated and would've had to have been rewritten from scratch - which I also disagreed with, as I felt it held all the most needed basic user help in a working format as it was...

All that is needed is a volunteer willing to do the job, and time to do it.
Anyone could do it, and post it somewhere at simplemachines.org.

Would that be you?

It wouldn't be that hard. Besides, we already have core theme together. That's a good start. Just go further and make necessary updates to your babylon theme using core theme as the guide.  ;)

Quick question:  Is the final version of 2.0 the same as "2.0 Gold"?

I've been trying to download some mods and some of them say that they are only for "2.0 Gold", yet I cannot find a single reference to "2.0 Gold" on the site,

Thank you in advance.  :)

There was debate as to whether the final version would be named "SMF 2.0 Gold", "SMF 2.0 Final" or simply "SMF 2.0".

Final implies it's the last ever release. Probably a bad thing, and one of the reasons I'd try to avoid that term officially. Given the lack of point releases so far, it may just live up to the "final" name anyway.

Gold usually indicates (in the dev world) that it's the production-ready release. This is due to the old practice of burning a master CD for duplication on special CD media (Kodak used to make it, instead of a green layer, it was gold).

Simply "2.0" is fine for version numbering as that's what it is.
