I have had this problem since I have chnaged hosts several months ago. Anytime a new version of SMF is released and I try to upgrade by clicking the link on the admin page, it will not let me do it. I get this.

Forbidden You don't have permission to access /forum/index.php on this server.
Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.
I don't know if it's permission problem or something on the hosts end. The last time there was an upgrade, I did a manual upgrade and it became a headache as most of my mods no longer worked. I want to avoid that. BTW, I am using HostGator as a host. Maybe someone with experience with them can help me out. Thanks.
Hello there.
I would suggest to check your chmod firstly. Make sure that Packages directory is writable (chmod 755 or 777), and that it has "temp" and "backups" folders in it, which also shuld be writable.
Also try to chmod index.php (from your forums root) to 755 or 777 and try to update again.
Also you didnt mention exactly what version are you running? 1.1.13?
Regards.
Yes, I am running 1.1.13. And those two directories were already set to 755, but I changed them to 777 to see if that would matter. It did not, I still got the same error message.
And have you tried to change chmod for index.php too?
Yes, no luck.
Do you have problems with uploading mods by any chanse?
Have you tried to upload small update pack and install it as mod though?
I typically don't have problems with mods unless it's something that's really out of date. I did try to update it as a mod and got this.

| The package you are trying to download or install is either corrupt or not compatible with this version of SMF. |
Then this seems like "mod security" problem to me.
Do you have "mod security" enabled on your server? Can you tell us what OS are you using on your server?
The server OS is Linux. I don't know anything about the mod security. I don't even know where to find that out.
do you have version emulation mod installed? if so you need to reset the version to latest then try the install again.
Actually, I do have that mod and it was set to 1.1.7. I changed it to 1.1.13 and still get the same error.
are you sure you saved it after the change? i used that mod before and had no issues with the install once the version was reset. you could also try uninstalling the mod and see if the upgrade will work.
Uninstalling that mod and installing the update as a package worked. It wouldn't do the update my clicking the link in the admin panel. But installing it like a mod worked. Thanks everyone for the help.
