I upgraded to 1.1.14 and there has been a literal explosion of new fake members. i used to deal with 10 a day, now i am gettin over 100! this is not okay, i have to go thru and try to guess who is real and who is fake. any ideas???

Kind of strange that over the last couple of days there have been a heck of a lot of problems with spam.
I use Stop Forum Spam on 1.1.13 and have been looking into "bad behaviour". I still don't get any new members, we are a new site, but at least I don't get the several a week spammers.
I suggest you read some of the other threads with this problem that might help you out, good luck.
Just to straighten some things out. This is not related to SMF 1.1.14. I was using 1.1.11 and saw an exponential increase in successful spam signups a few days ago!
I asked my hosting provider if they'd seen an increase in spam but replied that there had been no noticeable difference, atleast not to the extent that I had been experiencing.
I've always had the SMF visual verification on highest and combined that with 'member approval', but getting 30 fake signups a day gets quite tiresome to go through since you don't want to miss any real ones in the process.
It seems obvious to me that what has happened is that the spambot makers have managed to bypass the highest setting of SMF's built in check so I'm currently in the process of installing the "notCaptcha" mod. I suggest you give it a try as well!

I had this problem, too --lots of robots registering--- it was crazy.
I installed the mod called "avatar verification" and my problem was solved.
I also banned all IP addresses that I knew were bogus.

Just upgraded this morning and have had almost 30 spam accounts since! I will read around the forum as well.
notCaptcha works wonders it seems. Zero spambot signups so far today, (14hours since I installed it). Highly recommended!

I just installed a mod that makes people answer a question as well, I'll see how it goes I guess. Seems like almost everyone on my site is a spammer right now.
I've also noticed that whenever I post on my facebook fanpage that there is a jump in the amount of people that look at the page that I posted about almost instantly. I wonder if these are connected.

My upgrade to 1.1.14 also caused the spam accounts and posts to skyrocket. It started happening hours after it was complete, and now that I looked into why it seemed to kill my anti-spam packages that were working fine.
Did anyone else have this problem?
It could have just been bad timing in your case too, since at least Stop Forum Spam is having some trouble at the moment,
and the latest spam wave seems to only have started within the last week or so...
Anti-Spam Verification Questions for 1.1 is STILL working, went from over 100 new "members" to the usual 2-3 yesterday!
Sure beats having to check each one out for authenticity.

This is not unique to SMF from what I have heard. My friend runs an IPB forum and has also seen his sign ups sky rocket. Whilst something like StopForumSpam or Project Honeypot can help it does not catch them all and with this current attack their servers are being overwhelmed. Using a question/answer in SMF 2 or something like notCaptcha mod in SMF 1 will stop the flood.

I was getting hit hard by the spammers. The new registrations were coming in faster than I could delete them. I installed the Anti-Spam Verification Questions Mod and all the maddess stopped cold. No more, no mas. It was that simple. I did ban a couple of IP addresses so I could watch their activity in the error log. Boy are they persistent. Constant attack. Since the mod, the door stays closed. Thanks so much.

Technically, there shouldn't even be 1 a day, as in my forum. You really need some mods.
