Just spammers attac stared last weekend and goes on today even updated 1.1.3 to 1.1.4 and repalced SMF default image verifycation with http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=2932
Any ideas wich hole they use to register ?
I'm having the same problem - all of a sudden in the last few days there seems to be a concerted effort by foreign spammers to join the forum >:(. I am using version 1.1.14 at the moment, but don't know what to do to upgrade, or whether this would fix the problem.
Is there an idiot's step by step guide to doing this? I don't get on with techno speak :-[, so just plain basic English would be preferable - I have tried following lonks from the admin panel but don't seem to be having much luck. Maybe I shouldn't be allowed to use the keyboard unsupervised.................
any googd solution for this to prevent those spammers from registering ?
I'd suggest updating your forum to SMF 2 and setting a question to go with the normal captcha on registration. This is what I have done and it's stopped the flood of new registrations.
2.0 only came out of beta... some of us might not be yet in a position to cleanup our mods and move.
Running 1.1.14 and have had 3 spammers bypass email + admin approval registration this morning. This is very BAD.
There are other anti spam mods you can use that should prove harder than captcha for the bots to bypass.

They are bypassing, captcha, email verification AND manual admin approval! This is far worse than just captcha.
On the board I run that is SMF 2 I enabled the question and that stopped them. I have just installed not captcha on a board I admin that is still running 1.14 so we shall see how effective that is.
Looks like another admin (or an update) switched our setting from Member Approval To Member Activation. That explains it.
I've used this one for a long time. I'm using 1.1.14 and it works, but it's been there a long time. I've never been spammed, but they are trying as I type.

Glad i found this thread..i just updated to 1.1.14 and today got hit with a load of spammers as well. I just installed the mod wandawill suggested, seeeems to have stopped them for now.
What happened?
to add, i set the registration to member approve and created a test account to make sure the new anti spam mod worked correctly, it did.
even after i approved the new test account form the email the admin account received i never got "confirmation" that the account was approved.
Is there some other setting i should look at?
i installed the "Anti-Spam Verification Questions" mod and it is working!

You rock. Spammers now gone.

Stopped them. Thanks!
Excellent Mod!!!! Thank you!! Works great.... ;D
My three 1.1.14 SMF forums were getting hammered with spambot members in the past two days!
Wow, I love this Mod!!
24 hours later and not one spammer on my three forums! AWESOME!!!!! ;D
I finally did a manual install on that mod and I did a test registration. It seemed to work. Now I will see if it actually works and if the four new spam registers an hour have ended...

What do you set as a question?
They need to have
simple answers which cannot be misinterpreted and eassilly answerd by an idiot.
Think about it, if your are intelligent it is very hard to think like an idiot. (Now watch the replies saying that I am by writing this!)
Questions:
What colour is grass? - Green
What is the European currency? - Euro, but some may say "The Euro"
What do you use for your questions and how many do you have?
It's best if everyone just comes up with their own questions and answers, and judge for themselves if they work like they should or not.
Discussing these things in public, and trying to work out what everyone uses would just help the enemy to decide how they are going to work their way around the questions ;)
I include (one word) at the end of my question. I don't think caps matter, but I would keep them very simple. You wouldn't believe how many people didn't know the sun is a star. (simple)
I did some simple comprehension questions with the answers spelled out at the end of the question. One wrong, one right. And a counting question, asking for the TYPE of answer I wanted.
And I asked if you hate Spammers. I'll give one guess what the "correct" answer to that is. ;)
If I need to, I'll put in something more complex if anybody gets through, but it seriously takes a human mind to understand the questions, so I don't know if putting a more complex question in would really help any further. It takes a human to answer, so if they take the time to answer they are burning time on my forum. And my forum is admin approve of all new members so all they get from their time is a rejection, thank you. So...I think my security might be as good as I can hope for now.
I've not gotten a single one since it went live so that mod really does do good work. :)
I have decided on two questions:
What is the capital of XXXXXXX?
How many in a XXXXX?
I am resolved that if my registrars are that simpleminded they cant answer the questions then they have nothing to offer the forum anyway.
By the way, I have gone for the question option and turned off the "StopForumSpam enabled" and "Check also IP address" as people were telling me they got a "you are spam" notification when they tried to register.
Lets hope this works. I watched as someone tried for 10mins to register yesterday and failed. Dont know if it was a spammer or not!
Done the question anti spam.
Guess what, I had my first registration in five days and it was spam!
At least it took longer and was a human! They must be stupid to waste so much time manually regsitering when it is clear they will be banned and their posts deleted.
The mod is working great now, no more spammers since my last reply!
-now if I could just gte the spellcheck working!
