hello.
i have a lot of ISPs from mostly russia / eastern europe banned because they were spamming my forum.
these bans are all set up as "full bans", but they trigger only if the spammer trys to register or login.
what would i have to change so the ban gets triggered on any page?
Lainaaso the ban gets triggered on any page
use htaccess to keep them out of your domain altogether. I have the whole of china, russia and a few more delinquent countries banned, and (by miracle lol, it's 16.000+ lines of ip ranges) it works with no known side effects ! Proceed with care, or you'll lock out most of your members and legit visitors as well.
i was hoping for a way i could do this internally, so i would have to maintain only one list of bans.
i run a small non-english forum and don't ban ISPs from my target countries, so i think i am fine.
but speaking of hole countries ip-block, do you (or anyone else) know of some good and maintained ip-lists?
i found this one (https://www.countryipblocks.net/e_country_data/), but i am not sure how accurate it is.
If you get repeatedly hammered by some specific ip's, add just those to an htaccess and they're out of sight\out of mind\out of forum, and won't fill up error logs. Once you get the htaccess going, just build on it, adding the worst culprits as they appear. Some here warn against htaccess, and I agree it's a 'dangerous' path, but once it's set up properly and maintained it's a great tool against unwanted visits > slamming the door shut.
Can't recommend any source for country ip's, the ones I use turned out fine for my purpose, but with extreme numbers of entries havoc is always right around the corner, but can of course be instantly fixed by removing the htaccess file, then sort out any errors and ftp it back again.
btw, for the few remaining entries in the forum ban list, I use this redirect tip (http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=37005.0), they're sent barking up the wrong tree in some remote countryside in China. Have fun!
i use this mod (http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=2385), which does essentially the same.
i will have a look at the htaccess way to ban the worst IPs, yes.
if someone still has an idea how to ban banned guest from the whole forum, i would appreciate a hint. :)
Could try banning via the cpanel - that way your whole site becomes inaccessible to anyone on those IP ranges.
i dont have any control panel on my host.
