you want to have buttons like image 2, then use the default theme that comes with smf 2.0 if you are not using 2.0 then upgrade to 2.0.

i have 1.1.14 and a update to 2.0 will be a bit buggy?

i don't want the whole theme, only the buttons

an upgrade to 2.0 should not cause issues, and you would get a few extra features as well. Upgrading SMF (http://wiki.simplemachines.org/smf/Upgrading)

i have 39 mods installed, could they cause issues?

but i will not change my whole theme, only the buttons

the theme you have now is not coded in a way that you could easily use the same buttons that curve uses, also your current theme would not work on the upgraded 2.0 forum. you would have to check your mods to see if they have been upgraded to work with 2.0 or need to use emulation to install them.
