I uninstalled Simple Portal early on Tuesday morning. There was an error message in the log but I checked on the Simple Portal forums which suggested that any possible repercussions would be minor and easily fixed.
Everything seems to have gone fine but I seem to have one thing not working now and that is the email notifications.
Can someone tell me what to look at to fix it?
Any help for this?
Alternatively, I assume that when I upgrade to SMF 2.0 (in September) it will be automatically fixed?
What was the error? Are you certain this problem is related to the SimplePortal uninstall?
When you upgrade to SMF 2.0, you will start with a fresh new set of forum files. Everything should work fine at that point.
I'm not sure - it just happened at the same time.
The error is this (from the error logs):
2: mail() has been disabled for security reasons
File: /home/joemusic/public_html/forum/Sources/Subs-Post.php
Line: 661
you should contact your host and find out if their server supports email.
They definitely support email. The function *used* to work, members were getting email notifications of threads they subscribed to and I was getting email notifications of new member registrations etc.
Plus I am still receiving emails from other sources, it's just the forum emails that have stopped.
you mean your email account is getting email from other forums and such? that is nothing to do with this.
are you getting any type of email from your forum? pm received? newsletters sent?
if not then contact your host to see what is going on with their mail server.
I'm not getting any email from the smf forum.
I am getting email to the website from other sources.
I'm not sure I understand why that would be a problem with the host. Could you explain so that I am fully armed when I contact them :)
either your forum is not set to use their mail server or it is not configured correctly which you host should be able to tell you what you need to use to connect to the mail server
The error means your host has disabled PHP's mail function. You basically have three options:
Switch SMF to use SMTP instead (may not work - depends on whether they've also disabled fsockopen())
Contact your host and ask them to re-enable it
Switch to a better host (if your current host isn't willing to re-enable it and SMTP doesn't work).
Were you able to make this work using SMTP mail instead?
I've just found out the host did disable pHp on shared servers, problems with spam or something. They sent out some script which I'm supposed to do something with although what is not clear ;) So I need to contact them.
In the meantime I'm not sure what I should put in the settings on smf - username etc.
Whatever SMTP settings you would need to use for sending from a desktop email client -- those are what you'd use to send from SMF
