In all the 4+ years I have been running my forum I think this is a first.
I got this in a email today.
Quotetrying to register.. but cannot see the picture, that is required to type in the verification section
of the registration form.
is it possible to send me the letters so that i may type them in..
Thank you
How could this be?
What should I do?
Thanks,
Edited to add: I believe it was working yesterday as we had around the normal number of people register yesterday as any other day.

The other day I updated to smf 2.0.1 and yesterday the only thing I did was install the 'Guest Registration Notification' mod.
I uninstalled the 'Guest Registration Notification' Mod this morning, but have not removed the files, but that did not seem to change anything.

any errors in your error log?
looking at the source of the registration page i find this link http://appliancejunk.com/forums/index.php?action=verificationcode;vid=register;rand=db79e76cb6b97df5b7bb8f0813e1ef35

Ok, I noticed most of the error things at validator.w3 seem to have to do with one of my affiliate search box ads.
So I removed it and validated again. Went from 26 errors to 5 errors.
I have been using that affiliate search box ad from day one, so I did not think that was causing the problem and it did not seem to be.
Could you look at the validator again now and see if you think any of the five that are left could be causing my problem?
Thanks
your registration page is giving 22 errors still so you got some work to do. try using the web developer addon for firefox to submit the exact page to the validator
Quotetry using the web developer addon for firefox
Could you post a link to it please?
Just tried adding 'Validator 0.0.5' to firefox, but can't seem to see it in my list of web developer tools like I can firebug and fireFTP even after restarting firefox and the home page listed for 'Validator 0.0.5 is http://spaghetticoder.org/validator/ and that's a blank page for me.

Got it, cool :)
What do I validate now.
I go to my registration URL at...
http://appliancejunk.com/forums/index.php?action=register
and from the drop down menu of the web developer tool bar select Tools>Validate HTML and then it seems I'm shown the same 5 errors.
I see is a red X between to green check marks on the right of that web developer tool bar.
It shows me this when I click it...

Is that the problem
I don't understand what could have change in the last day or two that would have changed anything on my registration page.
Backup your file

Now replace the file with a fresh file from large upgrade pack of SMF, as on my few minutes visit on that page I've seen a lot of broken template.

Some of the things you can try
1. Try running file_check.php(attached) and see if there is any line space or even a space before/after php tags. If any file contain spaces, do remove it.
2. Try installing this mod, it might help - http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=1044.
Do I upload file_check.php to my forum directory and then just run /forums/file_check.php in my browser?
I installed the recaptcha mod and did some testing. That mod seems to work ok on the registration page.

Ok, I will try that later today when I get some more time and report back.
As for now the recaptcha mod seems to be working as some new members have registered for account this morning again.
I'm just really banging my head on the wall as to what could have changed, over night it seems.
Is it at all possible that our host could have made any changes that would have affected this or a mod, maybe the 2.0.1 update?
Thanks for all the replies and help.

Might be a GD library issue in php.ini, just a guess :P.
It's a good thing to ask your host if he has made any changes overnight :P.
in template files on theme you are using on forum, there should not be any empty space or line at the end of the document, after that ?>

Lets look at the recaptchalib.php that is in the file_check.php list as I believe this file just got added this morning when I installed the recaptcha mod.
I have attached a copy and when I looked at it there seems to be a ?> at the end of the file, correct?

But what about the line space after the ending delimiter ?>.
- Remove that line space from the file
- Re-upload the file
- Run file_check.php again to see if there is any change in the result regarding this file.
line space?
I just must not understand what your talking about, sorry.
My cursor seems to end at the ?>
what editor are you using?
Try this file and run file_check.php after uploading it.
Try to use notepad++.
I'm on a Mac, notepad++ won't work for me.
I could not see the line space with TextWrangler, but could see it with Dreamweaver.
Anyway I removed the line space and uploaded the file again then ran file_check.php.
Seems it removed it from the list, new list is here....
So is there something that added all these line spaces to all these files or what?
Seems like a lot of files I have to manually edit and many of them I don't even use, they are from old mods that I never reinstalled from SMF 1.1.14

Ok, guess I need to learn how to use text wrangler better.
Just for the heck of it I went to my test site I have on a local machine. It's SMF 2.0 and I use it to play around with installing mods to see how they work before I try them on my live site. I run file_check.php on it and again come back with a lot of.... 'File does not end with ?>' yet the registration verification image still shows up on the test site.
So what's with all the line spaces and you think all these line spaces are causing the registration verification image not to show up?
In any case I need to go through each file and manually edit it correct? Just want to make sure as it's going to take me sometime, lol...
I find this frustrating, yet interesting and kind of fun. A learning experience for sure...
Thanks,
it may have a part in the issue, but it may not be the cause of the problem. also take a look at http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2332/how-do-i-turn-on-line-numbers-by-default-in-textwrangler-on-the-mac which will make the empty lines more visible
Line numbers help, thanks!
My host also got back to me and said...

Hello,
We have not done any changes on the server, everything remains as it was. We also didn't get any complaint from other customers on the server.
and being someone may ask later I will just say now. ;)
My host is MonteCarloHosting and they replied quickly this morning as always.
So I will start to edit files and report back, thanks again for all the help.
Nice to see that we managed to trim the issue somehow :).
Ok, most of the edits have been just removing line space or adding ?> at the end..
With the whizzypic.php file it ends like this.
function insensitive($a, $b) { //used by usort to sort file list case insensitive -------------------------
return strcmp(strtolower($a), strtolower($b));
}
?>
</div>
</body>
</html>
Do I just delete the ?> that is there now and move it to the end?
that is not a default smf file, since as such i dont think i can answer that question.

It's not something to do with the WYSIWYG editor from when you create a post?
no that is not from the editor smf uses.

I wonder if it's something left over from a mod I used in SMF 1.1.14 and no longer use today.
I will skip over it for now and research it later, thanks..

It can be related to some gallery mod you have installed before (just making a guess :P).
Remove this code from the file and don't leave any space in the bottom.
</div>
</body>
</html>
you can always download that folder to your computer and delete it off the server to make sure it is not causing any issues.
Will try that Joker, thanks...
All the rest of the files are in forums/Themes/dilbermc
That is a old theme from my smf 1.1.14 days that I never plan on using again.
Could I just go into my admin panel and remove it or would it be better to delete the forums/Themes/dilbermc file with FTP?
do both things to fully remove the theme from your forum.

Ok, have never added or removed a theme in SMF 2.0 yet. Thought I was just going to here and delete it.
Admin>Themes and Layout>Modify Themes>Dilber Multicolor
All I see for choices are...
Browse the templates and files in this theme.
Copy a template from the theme this is based on.

all templates inside folder BoardIndex.template.php, index.template.php etc. When you edit the those files, all must end with ?> and after that should not be anything, no character, no space. ;)
I've attached file_check.php in my previous replies which do the exact task :).
ok, i didn't see. btw didn't know either for that file, tnx for it. :)
admin -> current theme -> theme settings and click the x image for that theme

OMG, and I could not find it...
I kept checking the Admin>Security and Moderation>Anti-Spam page for the registration verification image to show up as I have been editing the file.
Seems removing the two line spaces from the index.template.php file solved the problem :)
The registration verification image is back!
I need to going through the rest of the file to finishing editing them, but I still have to wonder what caused this in the first place.
great glad you could get it resolved.

Thanks, what are you thoughts on what caused the problem to start with?
some manual editing could have caused it or a mod install, hard to know exactly.
and you still have the recaptcha mod installed so we cant see the default captcha
