Hello everyone,
I was wondering, is it allowed to remove the version number from the footer? I know the copyright notice must stay in, but is the powered by required too? So instead of:
"Powered by SMF 1.1.15 | SMF © 2006-2011, Simple Machines"
Have something like:
"Powered by SMF | SMF © 2006-2011, Simple Machines"
You don't need to tell hackers what version you are running, or make you findable via google so they can apply an exploit (search: "Powered by SMF 1.1.11" for example, it will give you a nice list of forums running old software). Similar to not telling which Apache version you are running via mod_security.
Of course it won't add any real security, only obscurity, but every bit helps.
Thanks for any replies,
Luc
the only part in 1.1.1* you can change in the copyright is the version or remove the version everything else must stay in place, there is even a mod that will remove the version for you.
Okay, so the second example is allowed but nothing more than that may be removed?
yes you can remove the version but nothing else
Okay, thank you :)
