Well time for another peak into the SMF admin center. I can feel the excitment all of you are having right now. ;)
AEWSOME!! :D
Thanks!
That is really nice!! Can't wait to see it soon.
I wonder if it still uses pop-ups. I don't really like pop-ups, they can be a drag.
As of now, on my beta -3.1415 test site, there seem to be some kind of conflict with javascripts in my mod; pop-ups in Permissions screen do not work.
I would love to see we don't use pop-ups
-Dennis
The conflict, as I thought I warned you, is due to errors in your javascript in places. Try turning on script error notification in your browser, and then navigating to the page that has the problems.

that's really neat, thx for the preview, David... and congratulations to all the developers! :D
alright now lets release this masterpiece :D
Looking good. :D
How'd you get that smudge effect on the website as shown in the first SS? I wanna use that on my site too... :P :P :P ;D ;D ;D

You can't modify the permissions of the administrator membergroup.
WOW !!
Beautiful work. Better be careful or people will begin to expect it.

Yes, in "Edits Groups and Permissions", and click on one of those many "advanced" links.
Will this be in the next beta?
(No more beta please, a final version also availible for us, poor non-Charter Members :P )
Okay, can do. It'll just be about 4 or 5 months.... don't worry, I'll remember not to release any betas in the mean time.
-[Unknown]
4 or 5 months :o that's no good ;)
Ahem..
/me gets on the soap box
It will be done, when its done.. Now let them man go at his own pace :). And if you can't take it, go to some remote place where you aren't around a computer for alittle while :P.
/me steps down
But we need SMF! Our energy on all our forums is depleting!
Heh so was mine until I finally upgraded it to SMF :) http://www.thenewwwbl.com/forums/index.php
Your forum was awesome, until I showed up. :P
I was reading this topic and I'm the sort of person who can't resist making a point if it's only a minor one.
The big thing with all the permissions in isn't a popup, it's an expanded combo box. David has clicked open a combo box at the bottom of the screen, that has expanded upwards rather than downwards sue to limited space.
:)
Pete, welcome and yes that is true. The Advanced links however popup in a new window via javascript. This reminded me as I thought of a proposal for a different method last night. :)
note for those who didnt realise:
Feho asked for no more beta's... this is a bad thing as its basically been promised that the next BETA is a public BETA... so... yeah... bring on the next beta!!!! ;D
Where did you hear that?
It was around. If I remember correctly it was somewhere in the Update thread.
I've no idea where I heard it... but I've read every english public topic... so its here somewhere ;)

Just another update....we have released our final Charter Member only beta before we release a public beta version...we're getting much closer everyone :)
yeah, that'd be the one :)
I think somewhere else as well tho... (or another person backing that up... myeh)
Just trying to make sure that privleged "Charter Member Only" info is kept from the hands of the greedy general public. :P
The rights model is quite interesting, but I would suggest, don´t use fancy colors and fonts
as they are not so required on the admin part, they steal screen space.
Take a look at www.deluxeportal.com it is not as cool or fast as SMF is , but implements what
we are all talking about. BTW is "having a user in more than group" allowed in SMF?
If I pay the charter member fee and download my beta. Will it have the user groups/forums
rights feature included?
The only reason the colours are used is to show what colour you want the member groups to appear in the who's online list. I don't know what the fancy font's are for.
the permissions features are included with all SMF installations so I don't really know what you mean by "Will it have the user groups/forums
rights feature included?"
It seemed to me that the fonts of the text box that appear on the right listing the rights
are a bit BIG.
About the "features included" comment is because I didn´t know if the downloadable version is the last version
or a previous more stable version.
Charter members only get stable betas. The current version is about a month/two newer than the one they have - purely as we try and give it out at stable points
However, it of course does have a permissions system and management, although it's management panel was written more hastily and is currently being redone.
Let's not get started on Deluxe Portal - we have a member here who had that and after switching from it to stop getting load averages in alarming ranges.
Yes, SMF has the ability to put a member into more than one member group. There is the "primary group" and then "additional groups."
The difference in fonts is only a function of the Safari browser, (which is what David uses.) as far as I know. I believe they are the same normally.
-[Unknown]
Will SMF include the ability to manually assign people to user levels, rather than having to do it based on number of posts?
YaBB SE even allowed you to assign people to groups, what do you mean?
-[Unknown]
Oh I know you could assign people to groups, but the user level (Newbie, Junior Member, etc) seems only to work with post count, as far as I can tell.
I'd like the ability to use the Newbie field for other purposes than how many posts someone has made.
I think in this case you'd have to just create another membergroup called Newbie which isn't post based and has the same permissions as the other one. The reason is if you asign them to newbie they'll just get unasigned if they have more posts than that. Just have one newbie that is post based and one that is not and give them same name, permissions etc. Your members would be none the wiser
I think you'll find the membergroup/postgroup system in SMF more to your liking.
-[Unknown]
Excellent, sounds like SMF will deal with all my needs there then :)

Yes, SMF has the ability to put a member into more than one member group. There is the "primary group" and then "additional groups."
Could you explain the difference between Primary groups and Additional groups?
The primary group is the main, displayed group. In my case, my primary group is "Lead Developer." Any given member can only be in one primary group.
I, however, am also in other groups. These include "Project Manager" (administrator) and "Team Member." The groups are "additional groups" because they are in addition to my primary group. They are not displayed, and are there only for permissions.
-[Unknown]
Is it possible to display all of the groups? I use things like "Reviewed Vendor" and "Site Owner" to let users know things about other users. It would be beneficial to have a toggle option to enable listing all of the groups to which a member belongs.
I'm guessing that "Simple Machines Hero" is your title, correct?
That is my post group. I have no title.
-[Unknown]
Ok, so a person can have up to four text lines in their display thing, then, correct?
Primary Group
Post Group
Custom Title
Picture Caption Text
Is there any way to get more? I could deal with those four, I guess.
Right now, I see having the additional groups listed as a mod. I'm sure someone would be willing to write one (thought Cheschire was, in fact?) for you, but I don't think it's that useful for most of the user base.
-[Unknown]
I don't want to bother anyone with something like that. It's not a top priority. I can just use "Reviewed Vendor" as the title and "Site Owner" or "Ambassador" as the Primary Groups... I don't think any site owners will ever also be ambassadors, so it should be ok. Also, being an RV shouldn't grant any more permissions (at least, I can't think of any right now), so it would be fitting as just a title and not a member group.

uhh... nope. wasn't. could add it to my todo list tho.
can't you just add the extra titles you want for a person, as custom titles in their profile? showing all the groups by default for everyone, could be messy on the left of those messages, wouldn't it?
which is why its a mod and not a default feature :p

I know, what I mean is, why do a mod for it if custom titles could be enough
(-_^)
custom titles isnt automatic tho. this would automatically list all groups the person is a part of.
very good !!
why not add reply below

The problem arises when a person is rather dynamic in nature and qualifies for numerous things. AFAIK, you can only have a single Custom Title.
I don't think it would be all that difficult to add more text fields as needed...
Why not allow more than one custom title (in the same text field) separated by commas or something?
B
hmmm... arent custom profile fields already activated...?
Dunno... *points to rank* ;D Can you have the custom profile fields show up in each post?

Wouldn't they be rather useless otherwise?
-[Unknown]
yeah, thats part of the template system...
what I meant to say in the last post is that Admins can now add profile fields for users to fill in and of course display them anywhere in the template...

Not necessarily...you could have some things you want to show up in a profile view but not every time someone posts. Can't think of any right now, but I'm sure there are some... lol ::)

Okay, that's cool...what about profile fields that are restricted where only Admins can edit them?
B
That can also be done, of course ;).
-[Unknown]
Cool...then I guess that would solve the multiple custom titles problem. ;D
