Title: Hi SMF
Post by: SORB on July 16, 2012, 09:44:18 AM
First of all I'd just say love this product

Hi I'm kinda new to SMF and programming in general.I have successfully installed the program onto a website. I am apparently not allowed to post the link to my forum but it is sorbmc dot co dot cc

I just need to know a few things that the FAQ's didnt really explain that well

I want to make 4 new tabs at the top (Forum, Vote, Donate and Staff List) and want them to like link to a page where I can insert text and graphics. I want there to be a home (forum will be the current home tab) where I can display one of the boards posts on (announcements) and display stats and user info, top posters and the what not.
I also want to add some quick navigation links on like a sidebar type thing that also shows recent posts, whos online and a donate button.

I have all these great and exciting ideas but dont really know how to implement them, any help will be appreciated thanks

It sounds like one of the "portal" mods might do the job for you. They extend SMF to allow a custom front page and other functions. The alternative would be to write a new theme that crams your wishlist onto a standard SMF page.

You should add a portal (simple portal is good simpleportal.net)
and a menu editor lite mod (thats the name of the mod search it up on the mod site)

Thanks so much it looks so good now you guys are so helpful, unlike other sites  :-\

Sorry I have a few more questions (sorry for being a noob  :P)

How to I change the news in the top right hand corner (reads SMF just installed)

Its a minecraft server, can I add a little grass block for the icon of the website?

I want to add a few more tabs at the top (Vote, Donate and Staff List), can I do this and make a separate page for these?

And also my boards' urls are like index.php?board=1.0 after the adrees is there a way to make it like just say /GeneralDiscussion /Intoductions

Oh one more thing, how can i change the colour of the stars next to the players name (the admin has the 5 red ones). I want to make new groups and change a few colours around

Thanks Again, sorb

K
Go to admin>Main>news and newsletter
change it form there

For a favicon
I forgot how to get it but yes you need to have that green block
for tabs i suggest a mod called menu editor lite

for the url thing download pretty urls

and to change member group colors you go modify the member group
but to change the ranks you have to go to FTP and change them

I answered all of ur questions lol
Search the mod on the mod site

I added an icon but I have simple portal and the favicon only shows up when you click on the forum tab and no where else throughout the website ALL GOOD

The favicon needs to be in the root of your site, then, too. :)

Stick the favicon in /favicon.ico (site root, ICON format) and the entire site will show it. No HTML code is needed unless you choose to use a different location or format or name. In that case, every page will need the HTML "shortcut" tag. Even after deleting your bookmark and clearing your browser cache, your browser may not pick up the new favicon for some period of time, so be patient.

if give ppl a portal situation let them check them out made a while back a topic for the dutch people around what is around if we are talking about any portal out there, i would suggest they can see for them self and choose wich fits best in their opinion ;)

just the portals can be found here in a list i worked on back into the days

Portals for 1.1.x and 2.0.x (http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=383325)

most of them are SMF mods exept the ocportal thats an extern one ;)

Thanks guys for answering, the site is great I have already received over $200 in donations from a donate button on my website thanks to you guys :D.

Anyway sorry but have 2 more questions lol.

1.Is there any way to increase the upload limit for attachments? People need to upload screenshots and they cant becuase the limit is to low D:

2. Is there a way to set a default avatar because it makes all the profiles look alot nicer lol?

Help would be appreciated as always :)

For the first one i think its in features and option or something. Or in the other thing in which there is layout stuff. Forgot the name

for the 2nd one there is a mod on the mod site for that
