First of all, FYI we are running SMF 1.1.16
We had some difficulties the other week with our host and for some reason now seem unable to send mail from the forum. This cam about when an old member who had forgot their password tried to login. They made multiple requests for a password reminder but without success.
When I checked the forums error log I saw these errors many times.
Unable to send mail to the email address '*********@gmail.com
And....................
2: mail() has been disabled for security reasons

Does anyone have any ideas why this is/has happened?

It looks like someone has disable the mail() function in PHP, you'll need to contact whoever looks after your hosting and see why the mail() function in php has been disabled.
