Title: How about a auto detect mobile theme?
Post by: ApplianceJunk on November 13, 2012, 10:56:41 AM
Mobile devices are the future and the future is now. :P

IMHO it would be nice if SMF would come with a mobile default theme along with the regular default theme and be able to auto detect what theme would be used when someone visits your site.

I know about tapatalk and other mobile themes, but I think it would be so much better if it was something SMF offered as a feature of their forum software.

karalahana....   what?

Although there is a WAP2 mode, it is not really a "mobile theme". At least it's not a "theme designed to be viewed on a smart phone-like device" which is what most people mean when they ask for a mobile theme.

That being said, there is some work on a mobile-optimized theme for 2.1

It's old with no support.

It's a mod and not a default theme. ;)

It's still a valid (read useful) tool!  I still use it on a HUGE forum.  2.0.3  Works flawlessly.

So it's no good simply because it doesn't come standard?  It's your forum.   :D

After taking a second look I see it also says, Last Modified: December 24, 2012, 03:45:24 AM

Seems to kind of contradict the part in the description that says..." I have discontinued development and support of this theme a while back".

I don't know if it's too early to ask, but will the mobile theme be customizable? Like changing colors to match your forum's color scheme and adding our forum's logo to the header area?

The edit I made was only to add the discontinued message, I haven't worked on the theme itself for over two years.

Personally I hope SMF dont build in autodeteck. Its  a constantly updating thing and there are modifications out there that do an excellent job and are regularly updated, whereas smf is updated less frequently.

A mobile theme, yes, but even there the landscape is constantly changing, what is mobile, is it wap, is it smartphone, is it galaxy s3 size, tablet size, theres no one size fits all anymore.

I have a tablet/mobile version, using the autodetect mod, but the theme is basically identical to the main forum theme, but the side panels are all removed, conts are changed and increased in size to be more visible, some extra text navigation is put in for devices without mouseover, and an extra login box is put at the bottom of each page floating. Works fine for tablets and larger screen smartphones, for smaller screens not so.

The trouble with the theme approach is that invariably they are the curve theme with all the images removed and the text left the same.

SMF Mobile theme, great, but leave off the auto detect please, or base it on screen size rather than browser, hardware etc.

SMF 2.1 is responsive by default, so no separate mobile theme is required.

Smf will not be using a mobile theme.

2.1 has a responsive theme design

This design will not be back ported to 2.0... But there are several responsive themes for 2.0 and one or two mobile only themes along with a (paid) mod to detect mobile access.

Um, do you know which ones they are, or should we randomly try?

Bloc has released 4 responsive themes (available on tinyportal) studio-001, studio-002, studio-003 and alphacentauri
We have also released the responsive curve mod which turns the default, Curve, theme into a more-or-less responsive theme

Of course, mods with modifications to main pages or their own pages will likely break this responsiveness

 :)

Thanks Kindred!!  ;)

Will check into these.  It seems that one should set a forum's default theme to Curve and then let the individual members choose which mod they want to use. In this way, guests that visit via a mobile phone will be able to "see" everything correctly.

Be Well,
Siirist
