There are a couple of mods out there, but they don't work. Especially not for v2.0.3
This should be a standard feature in SMF.
Thanks.
Mind providing links to the mods in question? Thanks.
http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=1752
there's another but it's for a much earlier version of SMF
QuoteCompatible With:
1.1.14, 1.1.17, 2.0 RC1, 2.0 RC1-1, 2.0 RC1.2, 2.0, 2.0.3
And also:
http://wiki.simplemachines.org/smf/How_can_I_install_a_mod_that_doesn%27t_work_in_my_SMF_version
and why should it be a standard feature?
Aside from the fact that XenForo and vB have it, most people's idea of 'standard feature' is 'whatever I think I need for my community to work', even though it's really not.
I think that 1000's of communities could benefit from a simple feature like this. Especially when it comes down to support forums, as posts can be easily marked with the right prefix. Yes you could change the topic title but the support of font weights and colours makes it presentable and uniform.
@Arantor, just because it says 2.0.3 supports it doesn't mean it does. It tried to replace a file that no longer exists in 2.0.3 and therefore doesn't display the option on the new thread page. I tried to adjust it through the script by placing that code on the right page but couldn't get it to function properly. Otherwise, the rest of the script does work.

Experience suggests that it is not the case. I mean, 5000 downloads over almost 4 years. Very likely a number of those are people re-downloading it to get updates.

What file is that, exactly? (I used to review mods, by the way and know SMF better than most people on the planet - and that's not an exaggeration)
I checked the parse instructions for 2.0.3 (http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?action=parse;mod=1752;attach=180545;smf_version=2.0.3 if you're wanting to check it)
It's modifying the Modifications language file for English, Spanish (Esp), Spanish (Lat) in both ISO and UTF-8 encodings and correctly flags that any operations other than English/ISO aren't 'vital' on the basis that they may not be installed.
Other than that, it's modifying index.php, ManagePermissions.php, Post.php, the default theme's Post.template.php and Admin.php - all of which are in 2.0.x.
Looks to me at first glance that it should work absolutely fine on 2.0.x actually... I see nothing there that should be broken.
Replace ./Themes/default/Post.template.php Test failed
My bad, the file does exist, but it fails to overwrite it. I attempted to edit this file myself and place the code from the mod, and upload it. But it still doesn't show the prefix option in the new thread page.
That would be because you have some other mod that edited the same place of the code and you'll need to manually add the code. It seems to work on a fresh install, meaning the issue is specific to you.
This WAS on a fresh install... I used to the package downloader and installed it from there.
No comment I assume? ::)
*shrug* Perhaps you should take it up with the mod author rather than asking for support here where no-one really pays attention.
Actually i found 2 mods for prefixes and both are sux and pain in the ass to manage...
http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=1752 - these is better one
If you try it you will notice that its not even close to what it should be...and there is "PRO" version that add's few new features but you can only get it for $$$
Actually every big forum software have topic prefixes as standard....vBulletin,XenForo,BurningBoard...
Its rely useful thing and many forums could use it...
well, first of all - just because "the others do it" does not make it a good feature, a useful feature... or even a reason for us to do it.
second - it may be useful to you... it certainly would not be so to me (on any of my forums... and "many" forum might be true... but I don't know if it would be useful on MOST forums (and THAT is what should be the primary determining factor in adding features/bloat IMO.)

Totally agree with you, but if it wasnt good future big softwares would not use it (i mean its not coincidence)
Not useful....lets take bug reports on these forum as example...
Why not add prefixes there? [SMF 1.x] [SMF 2.x] [SMF 2.1 Alpha]
Dont you think it would be more organised and easier for developers to check out all reports?
Almost every forum that is meant to be a support for something with many versions would find these useful...
I also know atleast 5 SMF forums that are about specific car (tuning,maintance,ect...) and i bet they would find it useful too.
I also find it useful for my GTA SA-MP server forum (Staff appeal, mods ect...)
If you look around on forums you will see that many of them would look much more organised with prefixes...
I PERSONALLY think that these is a good future that every forum software must have...

It's not about whether it's good or not. The people who buy vBulletin etc. are not necessarily the same people who use free software, and will have different needs. For those people, topic prefixes are probably useful. Not massively so; I've seen plenty of XenForo forums not using them at all, for example, probably more than I have seen actually using it.
Making it a plugin means people who need it can easily (in theory) get it without making it slower for everyone else.
Prefixes are only useful if people actually use them... and they don't half the time. Note that you could achieve much the same effect by setting up custom icons for the board (e.g. instead of the little paper icon)

And just because you don't think the feature would be useful to you also doesn't give enough reason NOT to add it. Do you honestly think I find the "Karma" feature a useful feature for my forum? Nope, not at all, but it's there.

Snap. I did start off using vBulletin but I'm so used to SMF as I've been using it from the beginning (Prior to that I used YaBB 1 Gold and YaBB SE)
lol.... actually, it is, Jonesy...
well, not just specifically me.
The key component that goes into analyzing these sort of requests is:
Do we have a mod that does it? Do so many people use the mod as to make it a useful feature addition?
The answers in this case are: Yes and No...
Yes, there is a mod.
No, it is not so increibly popular that everyone uses it.
As for it's usefulness on any given forum (like this one, for example)
Using a prefix like [SMF 2.0], [SMF 2.0.3] etc is completely USELESS if people don't use it... and considering how many users we have who star topics like "HELP ME" and "FORUM HELP" etc... well, we have actually TRIED to enforce some sort of requirement that people indicate forum version, mods, etc...
do you know what happens? They pick the first item in the dropdown list, regardless of whether it is correct. They just pick something so they can get on with their unclear post
So... at the moment, I think this is probably better off staying as a mod.
(mind you, the developers have the final say as to what goes in.. but IIRC, this is not part of 2.1)
That mod from Nibogo has had barely 5000 downloads - in almost 4 YEARS. That figure is total downloads for all versions since it was added to the mod site, and 1250 downloads a year doesn't strike me as that vital.
It's a mod that doesn't work... ???

Actually its works but its useless...i mean its useless as mod not future...
lol.... the mod is useless?
Seems to work just fine on my test board.
Albeit, I had to hit one point of manual install...
and I did remove the TYPE=MyISAM $UTFData from db_prefix.php
However, as alreayd indiecated, discussion of the mod belongs in the support thread for the mod, not here.
Also, as alreayd indicated, since the mod works, and is not incredibly popular, I don't see the need of this as a feature. :)
I've thought about this a lot lately, about implementing it, about not implementing it.
Doing it as a mod is very difficult because you really need to do this everywhere that you're dealing with topics, and it's not like there's a standard 'fetch these topics' method that can be extended.
On the other hand, there is a need for some users to have it - and if it could be done properly it would be a nice feature.
I can see the use for it here, but as I said, we could use icons to indicate much the same thing. Honestly I could see us adding it if we removed per-post icons.
