Simple Machines is very happy to bring you the first release candidate of SMF 1.1. This release marks the end of the beta-stage for 1.1. If you feel uncomfortable using software that's not gone gold yet, we recommend using the fully tested and stable 1.0.5 version of SMF. If you do upgrade, it will not be possible to "downgrade" except by using a backup.
SMF 1.1 has changed in many ways from SMF 1.0. Problems have been fixed, bottlenecks have been identified, features have been added, and code has changed. Mods and themes which worked with previous versions may very well not work without significant change with this new version. This includes integration with Mambo, MKPortal, and Coppermine. If you are not comfortable with this, please do not upgrade to this version.
If you feel you have found a security hole or very serious bug, it is best to email
[email protected] to make sure the correct people are notified. However, if it is not critical, it will be more quickly addressed if it is posted to SMF Coding Discussion (http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?board=60.0) or General English Support (http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?board=9.0). For any other problems, please post in the appropriate section of General English Support (http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?board=9.0).
Some of the most notable changes from the previous public beta are:
- A rewritten search engine to further optimize search performance, including separate subject caching.
- Better support for safe mode/suexec hosts in the installer and package manager.
- Sorting and better pagination is now supported in unread/unreadreplies.
- Added several improvements to the SMF convertors.
- Create backups upon package installation and uninstallation.
- Added a stylesheet for the print media.
- Increased usage of caching (http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=50229.0) abilities of eAccelerator (http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=49995.0) and similar packages for optimized speed.
- New permission settings for server stored avatars and uploadable avatars.
- A new [time]-tag, allowing to show a time that's dynamically adjusted to everyone's timezone.
- Added support for previewing a post without reloading the page for Opera 8.01+.
- Added a function for easily moving boards around.
- The repair boards and topics function now uses steps to prevent timeouts.
- Receiving 'report to moderator' notifications is now linked to a permission (moderate board).
- Many, many bug fixes, tweaks, optimizations, improvements, etc.
Please check the changelog.txt file for a much more detailed list of changes.
We've also created a new Performance and Server Configuration (http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?board=86.0) board for discussion of performance issues and tips and support for making your forum perform better. If you have a large forum, or feel your forum isn't performing as it should, please take a look at the information there.
Upgrading from your current version of SMF to the latest version could not be simpler, merely follow the standard procedure of executing upgrade.php. But, please remember to make a backup!! The upgrader will upgrade any installation from YaBB SE 1.5.5 all the way up to the latest version of SMF. You can always find information posted here about things like installation (http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=6765.0), upgrade (http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=6832.0), and more.

Thanks,
Simple Machines
On a more personal note.
Grudge, one of SMF's finest developers has decided to leave the development team to "focus on things outside of cyber life." SMF owes him a lot of gratitude for his continuous commitment to making SMF what it is today. Without him, features like personal messages, reports, registration management, package management, and converters wouldn't look the same. On behalf of Simple Machines and the users of SMF I'd like to say: Thank you, it's been a pleasure working with you.
yahoo!
1st post!

Does this mean I can stop supporting 1.0.5 now? :)
Glad to see it went public so fast. Now I've got a ton of boards to update :)
Great news :D
AWESOME !!! ;D
THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH GRUDGE !!
This is great. One step closer to final. Does this ersion require updates to the themes?
A few, yes. Mostly for adding sesc to markasread.
-[Unknown]
it work fine so far... faster parsing...great admin panel... no bugs yet that I can see...
jezz I've bought my charter membership just a few hours before that release 8) ho well, these guys deserve the donation anyway :) since i'm not a patient man, it will be nice to be a charter member ... and I've done very well ($$) with my 2 paid memberships forums anyway.. time to pay back a little . :)
THANKS for your help & time here GRUDGE !! I hope you still stop by from time to time..... ;D
Wow, I decided to try out SMF for the first time yesterday, and downloaded 1.0 B3 - and now there's a new version out! Great work guys! Very impressed so far...!
I am having problems, every time I press the "Mark as Read" it says "Failed to validate the Session, Please try again"
Thank you
Grudge!

Update the templates that have a 'mark as read' button. The URL needs to have ';sesc=' . $context['session_id'] appended.
thank you too GRUDGE!!!!
you ROCK!!!
and i will look forward to install this NEW version until it becomes more estable with mambo and the rest of the MODs hoping this time no more MODers will quit! Ha!

Glad to hear that RC1 is finally public :) You should update your theme ElecBoy ;) Grudge, thanks for your help on SMF, we will never forget it :)
Edit: Seems Compuart was faster :)
Very Cool!! Great News!
Hmmm, I hope my favorite template has a version for 1.1 :-\

Thanks for the kind words :).

Awesome! Thank you! My forums were working just fine and I was happy but I guess I should update.
I was reading the Update Guide and it said that the updater would be asking for "a few bits of information". What bits of info is it going to ask for so I can have those bits ready. :)
Thanks guys and I am sorry to hear that Grudge is gone. Take care Grudge!
Nothing you can't handle ;). Trust me, you'll look at what it's asking for and say, "that's all?"
-[Unknown]
Nice, Would you post the PSD for Buttons?, because i need to translate ;)
Does anything list the major changes from SMF1.1B3P?
I wish to determine what I will have to change after doing the upgrade.
Also what about mods?
There are no psds.
There are many performance and stability related changes, listed in changelog.txt. The package manager should be a lot more stable, but mods may have to be updated to work properly.
-[Unknown]
Thank you.
From Thailand :D
Fate is punishing me. I upgraded to 1.1 beta 3 just two days ago. I guess my FTP client was not writing files to the server so finally I had to scream for a bail out. My forum was down 14 hours. But it was a learning experience.
Are the advantages listed, actual advantages over 1.1 beta 3 or advantages over 1.05 or some 1.1 beta 2?
I am new, but you guys are the best and you are very decent human beings. Thanks for everything and Grudge, may you find a helping hand with every difficulty you ever encounter
They are advantages over 1.1 Beta 3 Public.
Check your email ;).
-[Unknown]
Thanks for the update! I've successfully upgraded one of my SMF 1.0.5 forums using MKPortal. The update on the MKPortal site for the previous beta version seems to work just fine with this RC1 version.
Great job!

Well done to the SMF team for RC1! And Thank you Grudge for the work you have given us.
Hi,
Thank you for this new version (sorry, I'm french). Actualy, I'm running SMS 1.1 beta3. I wonder:
- about the language package (french), will it works with SMF 1.1 Release Candidate 1 ?
- about the templates: is it possible to know which templates are change ?
thnx ;)
Thanks to all involved.
One question before I continue, can I use the same database with SMF 1.1 beta 3 public and install a fresh copy of 1.1 RC1 and use database from beta 3 public.
Thanks again.
! Fixed [/] parsing issue in announcements and notifications. (Subs-Post.php, Post.php)

There are changes. If you want to know what they are, take the default theme from 1.1 Beta 3 Public, and use a file comparison tool against the same files in 1.1 RC1. The same goes for the language files (compare the English to see the changes.)

No. You must run the upgrade if you want to use 1.1 RC1. That, or use a different prefix (which will give you a clean forum, and not the same data.) If you want to test RC1 with your data, you'll have to make a copy of the tables.

Im getting the same error when I try to log on as admin or even make a post - i have to clear the cookies and retry - umm maybe il try a new cookie name
edit -- that seemed to work renaming the cookie
8) keep them coming! we are ready :)
oddly, now that i have RC1 i am unable to install the mods i recently uninstalled to do the upgrade. what's going on here? it won't even give me the option "apply mod" in the package manager.
That probably means the mod is marked as incompatible with 1.1 RC1.
-[Unknown]
This could not be right.
I'm just in the process of uploadng SMF 1.1 RC1 and
SETTIN~1 file in Themes/classic/images/ is contained in
15 !!! folders??? Should I just delete all those folders or they serve some useful purpose???
Anna
the mod i have was created before rc1 was released, 2 months before. i don't see why it wouldn't have worked with rc1 when it worked with 1.1b3... very distressing, hoping for an update to the mod soon! :) two other mods that haven't been updated in like 4 months do install properly, however.
simple in each release things changed and as they have said alot has changed coding wise since 1.1b3

Sounds like a bug in unzipping tool or FTP client. I just downloaded the archive again and saw no such files or folders.

BTW, the install was very easy. Just like you said. :)

If you are using SMF 1.1 Beta 3 Public, you do not need to make any changes. That version is already compatible with PHP 4.4.0.
Excellent work, all of you. I just updated my website's forum (ironically, I was planning on re-opening the forum updated to 1.1b3 about 30 minutes after you released this. :p ) but the changes went smoothly, and I'm working on fixing my theme to adjust for the changes.
Grudge, you have been a true hero to this project, and have accomplished great things. Great things lie ahead of you no matter what path you take. Good luck in all your endeavours.
New update is GREAT, I went from .1-.5 page creation times to .01-.09. I think this is a wonderful increase.
Thanks for the update.
I'll be upgrading this afternoon
Hi,
It's not possible for translation team to indicate witch part of the language file is new ?
Could't be happier!
thanks boys, some time ago had to decide between a well known phpBB and a unknown SMF. Made a good decision!

Well it did, its the only change I made, was upgrading, I still need to fix some stuff in my templates on both my forums, but other wise, everything is running much faster.
And I do want to thank all current and former SMT devel, Support, Graphics, and any other parts of the SMG group. You all have done wonderful work.
First of all, a big thanks to the hardworking team behind this excellent forum software!
I've just upgraded to RC1 on my test forum and so far it looks very promising :) While playing around in the Admin Center, I've run into two minor problems/improvement possibilities though.
Message Icon Manager
I can add new icons and rearrange them, but the "Remove" button/function doesn't work, so I have to use phpMyAdmin to delete an icon.
Manage Boards and Categories
I love the new "move board" feature, but if you want to place a board as a child of a main board which already has one or more existing child boards, I think it would be better if the "Child of 'Main Board'" button relocated the board above the other child boards instead of below them. In other words, it gives the same result as the "After 'Board n', where n is the last child board under the main board" option. I know nothing about PHP though, so it could be that the current configuration is better from a coding perspective...
Nice work guys!
Grudge, thanks for everything you have done for SMF. For all the help you gave me and others.
I hope that you find what your looking for in what they call the 'real' world ;). Cheers!

Great job, SMF Team! I really liked the new features in SMF 1.1 bèta 3 public, but I didn't feel very comfortable in running all of my forums under bèta software. However, I will be going to upgrade all of my forums as soon as possible!
Really, good job! And best wishes to Grudge!

anyway, How do upgrade fr 1.0.5 to 1.1?
Do i just download the install.zip (ver 1.1) from here and then just unzip everything and upload it into directory server?
and finally do i've to delete the 1.0.5 MODs?
Thanks a lot ;)
No, as described in the first post, you upload the contents of the upgrade zip file.
You don't have to delete the 1.0.5 mods, they will be overwritten (removed for you.)

Hey guys,
I just wanted to find out if there will be any support or patches for arcade.1.2.3
I just installed 1-1-rc1 for testing purposes, and the first thing I tried to install was the arcade mod 1.2.3 and it does not work.
I can continue using 1.0.5 but really do like the new features with the updated smf version 1-1-rc1.

Thanks for your hard work, Grudge!!
I like the RC1... well done first time I have upgraded, my forum, and I was hsocked at how easy it was, and the upgrade.php was simple to use.
Well Done
the package manager says it can't write to certain files and wants ftp, but with ftp it gets a syntax error. I assume it tries to chmod the files, but it's on my local windows machine (where all files are writable, smf11b didn't have any problems installing packages)
\\ edit
scratch that, it's working now. BUT. I had to adjust the ftp server so the local path to smf is /smf11rc, it didn't use the "local path to smf" I specified.
\\\ edit
I tried to apply my "vWarn" mod (1.02 without any modifications), error package installation because of some files couldn't be modified correctly. as expected. tried it again without modifications, "parse error in mod file", tried it again "You cannot download or install new packages because the Packages directory or one of the files in it are not writable!", now it sticks to that error. wtf? :-\
also, the default package manager sites aren't there :P
\\\\ edit
haha, I got it. AFTER it changed the directorie's permissions, it set the "local path to smf" for the ftp to / (which I changed to /smf11rc because it didn't work like that before) XD
not sure if that's a bug or just me being stupid. never mind ^^
Well Guys
Do you think you could have made it any easier ;D
Just upgrade my Beta 3 public test site running MKPortal and Helios Multi 11 and location Mod in about 10mins flat,
and guess what I cant find any thing that doesnt work
You guys are the Best - Thanx
Yes, thanks for an excellent 1.1 release!
Thanks dev team for releasing SMF 1.1 RC1 to us :)
And thanks Grudge for all you've done, you've been amazing!
geez, 1.1RC1 is really picky about slashes in mod files, and doesn't give errors but creates 0 byte files... >_>
\\ edit
actually, I can't get it to extract any image files properly at all (vWarn and vMulticolor-Stars mod), neither with nor without leading slash for the file works :(
<require-file name="green.gif" destination="$themedir/images/warn" />
<require-file name="yellow.gif" destination="$themedir/images/warn" />
<require-file name="red.gif" destination="$themedir/images/warn" />

Sverre,
My version of WinRar understands ".tar.tar" extention.
Though I agree that the file name should correspond
with the link text in all versions of downloads.
CRC Error is not the result of file_naming error.

Sverre,
My version of WinRar understands ".tar.tar" extention.
Though I agree that the file name should correspond
with the link text in all versions of downloads.
CRC Error is not the result of file_naming error.
I was a bit too quick on the trigger there... :P I just saw the "tar.tar" part of your post and it reminded me about my own little installation complication, so I posted about that without looking into what a CRC Error really is :-X
It's probably WinRAR which is responsible for the extension change from .tar.gz to .tar.tar, but unless you upload the installation/upgrade/update archive packed like I do, the change doesn't matter because WinRAR, as you've already stated, decompresses the file without problem.
I just moved from 1.0.5 to 1.1 rc1 flawlessly. All I need now is to convert the forum theme.

I updated from 1.1 beta 3p to 1.1rc1 without any problems. But I noticed now one little confusing thing. I have on the Main Index at bottom the latest post list, if I click on one posting the Message is not marked as Read, if I go back to Main Index ? If I go the normal way - Index-Board-Posting than it´s marked as read.

geez, 1.1RC1 is really picky about slashes in mod files, and doesn't give errors but creates 0 byte files... >_>
\\ edit
actually, I can't get it to extract any image files properly at all (vWarn and vMulticolor-Stars mod), neither with nor without leading slash for the file works :(
<require-file name="green.gif" destination="$themedir/images/warn" />
<require-file name="yellow.gif" destination="$themedir/images/warn" />
<require-file name="red.gif" destination="$themedir/images/warn" />
Anything in your forum error log? Are you sure the archive is compressed properly such that the "green.gif" file exists in the root of the archive?

That may be. However, the file is not a .tar.tar file, it is either a .tar.gz or .tar.bz2. If you name it something.tar.tar, you will get a CRC or similar error.

I've upgraded my forum with no problems ... Thank you to all the SMF team
Thank you Grudge for all your fantastic work ... You will be sorely missed
just tested it again:
no errors, it's compressed propely (extractable with winrar or gzip+7zip), working all fine with smf1.1beta3, I used the same package file for both fresh smf versions on the same local server.
Please send me the package, then.

Wow! Didn't notice this announcement the other day. Think before I invest too much more time in trying to build a custom template, I better install this. If I'm going to take the time to do that, I might as well start from something that is going to work for a while. (Yes, I'll make a backup first, and list of the packages I've installed before doing update. Some of which are probably not going to be needed now!)
I've seen some of Grudge's posts, and wish him all the best in the future. The same for everyone on the SMF team, actually! Speaking personally, I've been very impressed with all the help provided here and tone taken. :-*
Having some trouble figuring out how to say what I'm trying to say... I've been working as a web designer for over 10 years now, but have only recently begun working on the programming side of things. (Just finished my BSIT degree at end of July.)
The importance of training & support in the world of IT cannot be understated! I don't care how much experience someone has, whenever you're dealing with something new or outside of your 'comfort zone' area, questions are bound to come up. I really appreciate the existence of this forum, and would probably not be so happy about SMF if it didn't exist.
And, before anyone asks, I probably will become a charter member in the near future. Going to wait a bit longer until I know a little bit more about what I'm doing within SMF!
Hi all SMF lovers... Thanks to the SMF development team. I'm glad to hear that SMF 1.1 RC1 released. But I want to ask a question: I'm using SMF 1.1 BP3 and I've made lots of changes to the template files such as adding and Google AdSense banner, adding extra buttons to the top menu , etc. I mean my index.template.php, display.template.php, etc. are not same as the first time I installed 1.1 BP3. I installed new RC1 to my local machine , to my PHP server and I liked it. If I upgrade my forum on the web, will I have to make those changes again to all template files??? Thanks for your answers...
Sincerely...

Sent you a PM with the info
I'm trying to install the post by email mod by Grudge. I solved most of the problems. However, I got a "cannot start a session" error initiated by SSI.php. I tried implement Grudge's suggested changes to the SSI.php but get this error instead:

[Unknow] mentioned previously that the "cannot start session" error will be tackled in next beta. Was it already be fixed in this RC1.1?
if not, how to deal with the above error?
Also, please advise whether the mos-smf bridge working for previous beta still can work with this RC.
Thanks

I am having a little bit of trouble with the upgrade.
I installed it - it executed fine and gave me a success page - however my admin page is now missing the edit news feature and I am unable to add avatars from the forum profile information page.
Any ideas? Should I try to execute the sql information on the database again using phpmyadmin?
Thanks in advance...

I read the changes and it didn't answer my question, so I asked.
" + The package manager now works on safe mode servers without PHP suExec - mostly." From Jan of 05 - SMF 1.1 Beta 1. Installed Beta 3 Public, and it still didn't work, for me anyway. So "better" and "mostly" does not mean "does work" or "fixed", hence my question.
How about answering a yes or no question with yes or no?

One moderator suggest this great Programm http://winmerge.sourceforge.net .
- download your files from your webserver to local drive
- get the 1.1beta 3p which is not touched
compare this 2 dirs and write down which files were changed from you or some mods, if you did a good work before, you had comments inside your changed pages
- download 1.1rc1 and compare with your pages from the webserver ... it is than just some clicks in Winmerge to add your changes ...
I did it without any problems

LOL we have all done it ;)
I think i found a bug!
Ok i have a user named ,((ad ,((an. And I can not edit his name or e-mail him or anything. And on his account, he can't post or anything. In the SQL databases, when you go to change his name, it doesn't change. It changes to stuff like %73C and weird combinations. Different ones each time. He can also access the admin panel. And he registered with the RC1 scripts. I try and deleat him, but he just registers again and he has all his info back. And also, when you go to restrick the name, it doesn't save. Anyone wonna tell me if this was found or not? He's a friend and all, but if someone hates my Clan, then finds this, then I could be screwed!

You're welcome :)
1) Nope, 1.1 is fully PHP 4.4.0 compliant.
2) I would imagine the mod will be updated for 1.1 RC1 if it hasn't already.
Has [Unknown] retired too?

It isn't in the Classic YaBB Theme. ;) You should delete that file from your theme directory, so that SMF will pick the default theme's search template. :)
Aaron.
Just upgraded and its too early to judge it yet.

Hi,
I'm trying to upgrade from 1.0.5 to 1.1 RC1 in english and I got the following message :
Quote
Updating Settings.php... Successful.
Creating new tables and inserting default data...
Creating "themes"... done.
Creating "collapsed_categories"... done.
Creating and verifying "permissions"... Unsuccessful!
This query:
ALTER TABLE yabbse_permissions
ADD addDeny tinyint(4) NOT NULL default '1';
Caused the error:
Nom du champ 'addDeny' déjà utilisé
Last sentence which only means "Field's name 'adddeny' already exists" is in french becaus my db is in french.
Actually that's true, this field exist !
Does anyone got an idea.
My forum was a long time ago under yabsse then SMF 1.0.1 then 1.0.2,1.0.3,1.0.4 and at the moment 1.0.5
Thank you so much for your kinf support.
I installed SMF 1.1 on my test forum and I'm having problems getting the icons to show up. All I see are underlined links. I went through the options and couldn't find it. This happened immediately after install.
It seems like there might be a small inconsistency regarding the setup of the "news" and "key stats" boxes compared to the "user info" box in the default index.template.php.
newsbox.gif and keystats.gif are positioned 1px lower than userinfo.gif. If you find the following codes (in index.template.php) and change -16 to -17, it should be corrected though.
<img src="', $settings['images_url'], '/', $context['user']['language'], '/newsbox.gif" style="position: absolute; left: -1px; top: -16px;" alt="" />
and
<img src="', $settings['images_url'], '/', $context['user']['language'], '/keystats.gif" style="position: absolute; left: -1px; top: -16px;" alt="" />
EDIT: added "default" to avoid any confusion :)

I can't find this difference? In the release all three are set to -16px, and the actual height of all the 3 buttons are 18px. And it doesn't look misaligned either.

I didn't see it myself until I made a copy of the default theme and started to play around with the settings in CSS.
It should be very easy to spot if you set it up like this:
/* This is for the special header boxes on the top (user info, key stats, news box.) */
.headertitles
{
background-color: #000000;
border: 1px solid #000000;
height: 14px;

Just did a fresh install for a test forum. Was gonna install all the mods I need and then copy the new release into my current forum. I have no mods installed right now and while going through the admin pannel, I received the following error:
Quote from: error

ORDER BY minPosts, IF(ID_GROUP < 4, ID_GROUP, 4), groupName' at line 3
File: ************/test_forum/Sources/ManagePermissions.php
Line: 201
I checked the min versions on my host and it seems I meet the requirements of the forum.
EDIT:
Also, when I click on profile, I get the following error:
Quote from: error
Table 'smf_test.smf_log_warnings' doesn't exist
File: *************/test_forum/Sources/Load.php
Line: 800
and as a regular user you get:

sounds like a bug from my vWarn mod version 1.03, in which for some reason a bug I fixed in version 0.94 returned (but only for 11rc)... the "log_warnings" table is used in my mod, too. you sure you uninstalled all mods properly? :P
I know what happened, I think my ftp program was set to overwrite if newer, not overwrite. Let me try again.
EDIT: That's what happened. Everything is fine now and running great!

Yes, its there, but only in IE, not in Firefox. And adding that value actually make FF show it wrong instead - likewise with Opera. It has been like this since 1.0 so I don't think it can be considered a "bug" really. Just a result of browsers (still) showing css slightly different.
Ahh... It's good to know it's my browser and not my eyes there is something wrong with :P I hate small imperfections like that, but I don't think it's enough to make me switch browser. Hopefully, it will be fixed in the next release of IE whenever that might be though :)

you most download update package from the previous version, except when you have mods installed. You can use the upgrade package too, but it's larger.
Use this if you have SMF 1.0.5 or SMF 1.1 Beta 3 Public, or higher installed. Remember to run upgrade.php, and if you're not using English get the new language files.

That is impossible. Your SMF-files need to be the same as your database.
And if i point the smf 1.1 to the old database, can the 2 smf work with only one database?

NO
erh... yes. :P
if you use different table-prefixes for the forums, they'll be independent, if you use the same, it's basically the same forums with the same content, but other software (for example if one of the forum installations has one mod installed, that does not necessarily mean the other does, too). Can't think of a reason why anyone would do the latter :P

2 smf versions (that is, a 1.0 version and a 1.1 version) can't share the same tables. Of course they can be installed with different prefixes, but if one decides to upgrade, the only way back is to use the backup.

Anyways guys, my two other admins are regreting over switching to SMF insteadd of phpbb. But I do believe that Smf has a great future. And i insist on staying with it (luckily there is no good "smf to phpbb converter" (i bet this sentence after next google indexing will push the rating of simplemachines up)). However patience is ending. I have not upgraded to RC1 yet, as i have a couple of mods installed and waiting for their authors to release compatible versions (arcade, doublepost).
Anyone knows if the problem with Opera/Firefox logging in solved?
I only use firefox and I don't have any problems logging in or out.
Lifewise, I use FF, Opera and IE for my testing .. and Konq. on my linux box .. all works well enough.
Expect a release of a SMF to phpBB convertor soon .. spoke to the guy working on it, and whilst it has a few bugs, the core of it is there. We'll see when (if) it's released into the wild.
Overall, I'm damn impressed with SMF and everytime I get annoyed with it (for whatever petty reason), I get a phpBB install up and running, and find myself coming back.
Next time I do get annoyed, I'll try to document *why* and see if there is another avenue to go down rather than do the phpbb-shuffle.

It's good to see the next full version getting closer and closer to being released. I can't wait. The visitors to my forums have loved it ever since the switch to SMF was made and seeing now that more is being put into it and features are getting better, I'm very excited.
With the new version, is it possible to upload avatars to a remote location? For example if I wanted the "upload from hard drive" feature to upload to my own FTP instead of the site's server (For bandwidth/management purposes) could it be done?

Depends how you look at it. For the doing part, I'm sure uploading to the FTP then linking to that URL would be faster.
However, that involves more steps for the average forum user. They'd have to first find the FTP information, tackle with a FTP client to access it, then figure out where they put it, then go into their profile and put the URL of the FTP link. Since people don't read stickies all the time, I'm sure there'd be 2000 posts on my forum about the "inability to upload avatars".
For the user, it would be simpler to have the "upload avatar" feature access a remote location to upload to, and add the URL automatically (as it does for the server the site is currently on).

NOw, topic. I have had the following problem since switching to smf - when i sign-in in Opera, it signs me in fine. But when i click on home page it wouldn't show me logged in! But when i enter forum through any link - it shows me signed in! Magic...
I read here somewhere that the problem is the way smf hashes passwords, which is not quite "opera" and "moz/fire"friendly. I even saw a bugzilla with this problem (which seems to become a stub). So... me - no comments.
Wyld, as of smf->phpbb converter - that would be useful. I never tried phpbb, but i would like to ...
phpbb in my experience is a very flawed program. I ran it for about 3 months before I was hacked the first time... It never stopped from that point on.... I used snitz for many years and never had as many problems with it as I did phpbb..
Needless to say I switched all of my forums back to snitz until I found SMF... Now I am switching all of my forums from snitz to SMF due to it's increasing features, security, and ease of use.
Just wanted to share my experiences with you. They may be of help.
I like SMF 1.1 RC1, but since I've upgraded I've had little issues here-and-there. The one I'm concerned with right now is the background image used for all of the BBC buttons isn't showing up. Was it taken out? Along with that, the arrow used to go to the last post in a topic was removed... :(....
I'm still using the same template (it was just a copy of the old 1.0.5 default template that I edited slightly) as I did with 1.0.5 because I saw how the new default template looks, and personally... I don't like it. I prefer the way the header looked (by that I mean the buttons for Home, Help, Search, Profile, Calendar, etc, as well as the News Box's placement, the User Info box at the top).
But can anyone help me out with the BBC backgrounds?
Have you updated your template to 1.1RC1? There were changes so that old templates won't work proprely. I don't think the changes were very major though.
I'm a little annoyed since upgrading to RC1, a lot of the the Javascript stuff seems to be broken - I can't add news, people can't register, etc... also, the pulling a quote into quick-reply thing doesn't work anymore?

I have PM'd back and forth with [Unknown] a couple times, and the last thing I heard from him about this was:
Quote from: [Unknown] on September 22, 2005, 08:43:46 PM
For some reason, the sha1 function is not working properly. If you look at a phpinfo.php, does "mhash" appear anywhere?
-[Unknown]
Now, my issue ONLY has to do with the admin security check feature. I have received no reports from my users about not being able to stay logged in. So these may be two separate issues? It caught my eye tho, because I use FF at home and work ... only use IE on my game computer (and still get the admin login deal there).
I did check my phpinfo and did not see "mhash" in it anywhere ... used the find function so wouldn't miss it. I don't know exactly what that signifies or how to fix it and have not heard anything else since relaying that info. I'm sure the devs are good any busy with other issues, so since this doesn't break my board (only adds an extra step in for me now and then), I'm inclined to wait patiently until they have a chance. But I will keep checking back now and then ...
Any updates on this [Unknown]?

I'm a little annoyed since upgrading to RC1, a lot of the the Javascript stuff seems to be broken - I can't add news, people can't register, etc... also, the pulling a quote into quick-reply thing doesn't work anymore?
www.ryuxforums.net I believe you won't even be able to register... at least, it wasn't working two days ago.

Try uploading all files from the updatepackage again. Do you have any mods installed?
Hi
Hope this is the place to ask this. I have version 1.05. I looked in my admin area under the package manger, but i did not see anything to upgrade to 1.1. What i see is:
language tag 1.1.1
GeSHiSMf 0.0.7
Shorthand Time 0.1
Topic Rating 1.03
May I ask, how do I upgrade to 1.1? I tried to do a search but kept getting this message about stress on search function.
thanks
steve
upload the files from the upgrade package to your server and run the upgrade script
Ran the upgrade and it was one of the easiest ones so far :)
Just a few questions on some things that have been brought to my attention.
Is there anyway to make the preview option work like it used to? Like before when you hit preview when makeing a post the screen went up so the poster could read the preview - now the preview shows but you have to scroll up to it.
And is there a reason for an extra www to be added ? It seems every few times a thread or my forum index is loaded it adds an extra www like this
Quotehttp://www.cjexotics.com/yabbse/index.php?www
or something like
Quotehttp://www.cjexotics.com/yabbse/index.php?PHPSESSID=a bunch of numbers www
or it turns into a long url like this
Quotehttp://www.cjexotics.com/yabbse/index.php?PHPSESSID=1e824dde5b486ae08a5bea0a62b86f30
and the search engine friendly urls are turned on.
It's not causeing a problem,that I noticed,just curious
I wonder if someone can help me...
In attempting to upgrade to the latest SMF build, I encountered the following error:
Safari can't open the page "http://www.tvnewstalk.net/forum2/upgrade.php?step=1". The error was: "lost network connection" (NSURLErrorDomain:-1005).
As somewhat of a novice, I'm not sure what this error refers to and what steps I need to go through to correct it. In the mean time, I have a half-upgraded forum that's spewing scary errors all over the place. What do I need to do (or tell my host to do) to get this timeout to stop so that I can finish the upgrade? Thanks for any help, and I'm sorry about posting this in the News section, but it does pertain to the uprade... :P

Quote from: Uzbek on October 02, 2005, 06:36:33 PM
I am so happy to see someone else is having this same problem! Well, not happy you are having it, but happy, that my problem is not completely isolated. I have several message boards and ALL of them have this problem. Most are on the same server, but one is on a different server and has the same problem. These both fresh 1.1 rc1 installs and upgraded 1.1rc1 installs. 1.1 beta 3 also has this problem, but it is NOT as severe.
The problem seems to get worse too as I continue to use the forums, or at least I am noticing it more. It is not only affecting the admin log-in but also the regular log-in since I upgraded to rc1. I am unable to log-in on any log-in other than the login2 page. And on one of my forums, it sometimes doesn't even log-in on that page. Posts have come to a near hault on the boards that I have upgraded to rc1. Maybe someone can get me up to date on the status of this error.
Unknown, I am more than willing to create admin accounts for you on all these boards, but one of them may be hard for me to get logged into in order to do so.
Oh, by the way, this error occurs in ALL browsers I have used. Netscape, Firefox, and IE.

I have mods downloaded to the server but according to the admin panel they're not installed. I'll try re-uploading stuff then.
EDIT: I deleted all mods on the server and ran the upgrade again, but it's still broken.
Hmm, I just had the log-in problem on THIS very board as well.

Might be a silly question, but what is the EXPECTED release date for full 1.1 ?
I know that release dates may change, but does anyone have an indicative between RC1 release and proper full v.1.1 release ?

well... since the RC is called "RC1" you can assome there will be at least one or two RCs more before the final. It all depends on how quick all bugs are being fixed. I am sure that the crew doesn't have a date in mind other than "when it's done"

Since you've only got 31 posts under your belt and are therefore obviously rather new to the boards, I won't be too harsh with ya ... here's the nicer version of some of the responses I've seen to your question:
The devs never have a release date. Ever. They release new versions when they feel they are done ... they may not even know themselves until the day before. There is no timeline. They also really hate it when people ask ... which they do all the time anyway.

Combining them into one means office update isnt needed.
Certainly on my machine you cannot revert to windowsupdate without uninstalling microsoft update first

thanks for that :) It's hard to keep track of which groups announce release dates and which groups just release "when it's ready", but I'm happy to wait. Like everyone, I'd rather bug-free rather than a flood of bugs.
Don't worry, I'm happy to use RC1 for now :)
As for now the only issue i am having - is the login ptoblem! Sometimes if i follow a link into tyhe board - i seem to b signed off. But it happens in 10% times.
As for the rest - i am happy to use smf. Can't see any other bugs.

You can't make this update with the packagemanager. Unzip the updatepackage, upload all files to your server and run upgrade.php.
Thanks i have now done it

Reports are starting to come in from various members of the sites that they cannot log-in as well. So this is of course the reason why new accounts are being created by the same people. Then these new accounts do the same thing as well.
Is there ANY workaround or fix for the log-in issues yet?

You'll get better response if you give more info: what version of SMF to and from? what is the exact error message? Is the error message right away or after xx seconds? Did you chmod the files as required in the read me?
I've done a fresh install of 1.1 rc 1, and am getting a few errors like this:
8: Undefined index: name
File: /home/xxxxxxxxx/public_html/forum/Themes/default/ManagePermissions.template.php (eval?)
Line: 445
I've just tried my upgraded forum, and I'm getting them there too. Seems to be mostly in the admin sections like:
http://www.xxxxxxx/forum/index.php?action=managecalendar
I don't think it's affecting the actual running of the forum, I just hate to see errors in the log. ;D
I've got this & theres no errors
Big urls - Use repair_settings.php from downloads
Template errors - Cause maybe Missing template/custom theme
Did something change in the way the BBC code for lists is done? If so, is there some way for me to change it back to the way it used to render lists? Thanks in advance.
The list code is just [list]
[li][/li]
[li][/li]
[/list]
Yeah, I know.
I had someone embedding lists inside lists like so.
[list][list][/list][/list]
This used to render the lists still, and yes I know that it was not intended to be used like that. It used to indent without the bullets. Well, now it just ignores the closing tags and actually prints them out. So all the posts are loaded with a bunch of closing tags for the list. If there is a way I can set it back to how it used to render I would prefer to do this since the info he posted was documentation. It does not look so good now. Thanks.

EDIT: After checking the files he might have changed, the "sha1.js" file in the THEMES folder might be critical to this!
EDIT AGAIN: Well, after taking a closer look, it doesn't appear that ANYTHING was changed in that file, although it could be so minute I missed it. The index.template and Settings and Settings.bak files also had date stamps as being uploaded too, but I haven't checked them very closely to figure out what might have changed in them.
I finally updated my test site and now I understand why the themes are different :-X

Hi, for those that remember me, saying I was having 503 DB problems with 1.1b3. It was suggested that it was a mod I had installed, others said it had something to do with ssl. I'm now having the problem with my 1.1rc1.
----------------------------------------------------
"Service Temporarily Unavailable
The server is temporarily unable to service your request due to maintenance downtime or capacity problems. Please try again later"

I think I managed to track down something that may help solve this problem.
One thing I noticed is the url, it tends to have something like this in it:
It happens when I go to "xxxx.com/forum". I can remove the "PHPSESSID=adcff0ec82d6133363af2c1243e6ca3f;www" part, and then it loads just fine. I'm no expert, but I think it may a php bug.
BTW, only mod's installed are simpledownload and simpleportal. I just don't see how they can be causing this.

Can you post a phpinfo?
What is phpinfo.php? (http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=18250.0)
i have moved from IPB 2 to SMF 1.1 rc1 last weekend.
i got following errors / troubles.
1) BB code doesn't support incorrect nesting of values.
example: text [/u][/i]
[b][i][u] text [/b][/u][/i]
2) no options to change forum behavior for users.
there was option in 1.0.5
to change if user will see topic or board after posting.
to hide all users emails
to show if any have posted while you typing

after post i got error, no post. i have commented this, so for now all is ok, but it can be loose of security. isn't?

1.This format of bbcode is incorrectly formatting IPB(its paid, what do you expect?)
this is just incorrect nesting.
it can be reached by typing manually in any forum, not only IPB. SMF too.
but IPB supports it, and SMF is not.
it's naive to ask users to use correct nesting for such thins. it is not xml, i right?
i think parser must workaround with such things. =/

thank you, this is exactly what i asked for! :D
i am sure i posted this before but couldnt find the topic to bump :P
here is what i am talking about;
i surf in a board (which has many child boards and posts inside)
for example here Language Specific Support board.
i surf, then i click Mark as Read because i dont know most other languages.
so, i dont want them to be listed in my "new posts since last visit" list.
now, my Language Specific Support is greyed out. Shows no new posts.. (and all the child boards are the same)
but hey, when i click to "new posts" link, i see lots of things from language boards.
this is REALLY annoying.
please change that in next release :|
Marking read will only mark the current board as read, not it's childboards. It has always been that way.

you are wrong.
it marks all of it. i am sure my eyes are still working and seeing well :)
all the childboards got greyed out when i marked read
Yes, it will grey out the image. But it will not mark it's content as read.
so, then this is a problem that needs to be fixed.. :-\

Like he said its been that way. It's not a problem.
IMO it is. in a parent board, you click "mark as read" and IT SHOWS YOU LIKE IT DID, because all childboards go greyed out. But then you see its unread.
so, at least its showing greyed child boards is a problem.
and another thing, when you want to mark a board with lots of childs in, you have to click a million times
I guess it uses the same base as when you enter a board with new posts and return to the mainpage, without reading those new posts, the board is grayed out.

i think parser must workaround with such things. =/
This is because the new parser works, first it builds a parse tree, and because of this, the code must be correctly formated. When you type a message, there is some misstake fixing code that will alter your messages, if you have forgot a tag, but the code must be correct when it parses, othervise it can display wrong.
Showing here, if youre code is [b][i][u] text [/b][/u][/i], we will get the parse tree
- [b][i][u] text [/b][/u][/i]
- [b][i][u] text [/b]
- [/u][/i]
If you do a parser that accept incorrect code, then say goodbye to a fast parser, everything goes so much faster if you can think as a tree (from O(n²) to O(n log n) or O(n) or O(log n) depedning on operation)
/Carl
So let me get this straight....
You mark a board as read and they all grey out but then you still have to mark all the child boards as read too ??
To be honest I don't care if it has always been that way or not. To me it does not make sense or come into logical reasoning for it to be that way. In my humble opinion I think it should be changed to mark all children of the parent board as read also.
It just makes sense for it to be that way. :D

Yes thats right thats how it works. In a way its confussing. Maybe if enough request is made it can be changed.

OK, I think I understand the problem now, and I see that it's both a feature and a bug, depending on whom asking :)
Solution:
There should be two buttons, one "Mark Board Read", and one "Recursively Mark Board Read". If you use first option, then the icons should reflect the current state (likewise for the second one, but then it's only one state left)
Then you can implement some more buttons:
- (Recursively)Mark Board Old Read - Mark all topics not on it's first page at current limit
- (Recursively)Mark Board Sticky Read - Mark all sticky post read
- \cdots
/Carl
IMO,
there should be two buttons in parent board. "mark read" and "mark read all with child boards" (or anything shorter :P )
Yeeaaah, i've got this release, in the next update do you mind putting buttons in for singnature so the bb codes come out you can use these buttons bellow:
All buttons like that
I think "Mark All Read" and "Mark Read" should work just fine...
The "Mark All Read would mark the parent and all of it's child boards as read where as the "Mark Read" would mark only the displayed board as read.
If needed additional information could be included in an alt.
I could see something like that to be useful. For example here, I only speak english fluently, so I would like to mark all of the child boards in the Language Specific Support board as read, so I don't have to see them in the unread posts page. :) But it takes awhile to go into each individual child board and marking it as read.
I don't think the current functionality is a 'bug' nor do I think it should be changed. But as mentioned an additional "Mark Child Boards Read" or "Mark Read Including Child Boards" could be a nice addition. At least as a mod. ;)
Yea i have the same issue as u aka with the language boards. thats y i suggested the ignore boards but this will also work if they all get marked as read.
I finally updated my production site 8) and it went off with a hitch.
I even used my test site to modify all them themes ahead of time and put them in the Upgrade themes folders and did them on the fly.
One thing that would be cool to add back is: now in the "News and newsletters" you can not pick groups like you did before, IE just send emails to certain groups instead of "Regular Members"
Spoke too soon :-X

Happy to note that (at least part of) my problems seem to have been host related. My original host is going to be shutting down, so I moved my site and voila ... admin login issue is gone. Haven't heard any reports of users not being able to log in (once they recover their encrypted passwords that the DB export/import mangled).
I would still love to know what the issue was, since hosts can sometimes be reconfigured and most are happy to do it. Would be nice for the people who don't want to or can't change hosts.
I ran an the UPGRADE.php from the Upgrade version on a couple of my forums having the log-in problems. It seems to have done the trick for all the log-in problems, other than the admin log-in problem (although come to think about it, I haven't taken the security admin check thing back to default, so it MIGHT have fixed that too, just don't know yet)
I was wondering how near the final 1.1 is to release? I currently have 1.0.3 installed, and I'd like to know whether I should wait for 1.1, or just install the RC1? I ask because I've made quite a few little modifications, and don't really want to have to make them again soon after :)
Same situation as Ian above. Looking to upgrade from 1.0.5, but I'm going to be doing quite a few customizations afterwards. Knowing the general time line, to know if I should wait or go ahead, would be great~ :D
The Dev team here do not like to give timelines due to the fact that this is something they do on their free time. It's not their job and they have another other things to do like work take care of family some of them and life gets in between them. So they think its better if they don't give the public high expectations and give a time line and release date to not meet them later on. They just release it when they think its ready. I personally thinks that RC2 will be out soon. The reason being that they have over a months and change with RC1 out and they usually last 6 weeks or so per RC release. I'm expecting 1.1 to be final by end of Dec. begginning of Jan. Lets not put pressure on the developers and let them decide when they will release it.
No pressure. Just a Question.
But thank you for the input, it helps!!
Was just wondering...
In the perspective of installing a fresh, new board for a fresh, new site:
Would you suggest me using the 1.1 RC1 or keep with the 1.0.x until the 1.1 final is out ?
Note: I'm at ease with installing non-final software and stuff. Was just wondering if 1.1 RC1 could cause important troubles to some of the users of my boards ?
1.1 is not convertable at the moment
1.0 admin center still not tidy
I have not had any issues with the 1.1 RC1 release and it is pretty stable. But If you are uncomfortable with beta software, I would recommend you to wait for the final version.
Added: scs, what do you mean by not convertable?
Most bulletin boards doesn't have a converter for SMF 1.1
As I said, I'm kinda at ease with beta softwares and stuff. Actually I've coded the engine (PHP/MySQL) of my new site myself so installing a php script, even in beta, shouldn't be such a problem.
If the site is useable without big troubles by normal users just like any other boards, then no problem. Except if anyone see any other downside to 1.1 RC1 over 1.0.x final ?

There are no downsides, but there are a lot of new features like the introduction of a much better and faster search system, better RTL support, speed enchancements and more!

Most bulletin boards doesn't have a converter for SMF 1.1
I converted from vB 3.0.3 to smf 1.1 PB3 some time ago! And there are converters in the related subforum. But there were loads of tricks. Finally what i did: i converted to smf 1.0.5, and then just upgarded to the latest version.
I had a few problems within these 5 months, my site went down couple of times (once i had settings.php completely emptied! someone here said that it was a bug of smf). However overall it is working good. Well, as a free prog smf is good and probably the best. The downside - lack of mods, even the existing ones are going...
When i mean converters,i mean ones which can convert smf to .....
LOL, why would someone do that? If they feel uncomfortable they can take a backup before converting to SMF.
SMF is a posh forum software
Say someone wants a mod only phpbb got, they want to switch but can't due to the change of sql structure in 1.1

Sorry, I meant in general, the more code, the more space for a bug to be present. Such as 1.0 didnt have a bug deleting categorys, yet 1.1 Beta 3 had an error with it, the same with pulling SSI data from an empty board. SMF 1.1RC1 is bound to have some bugs that 1.0 never.
Yeah, the thing i don't like most about smf - it its "bloated" design, no offence, and lack of mods! It looks "posh". I'd prefer something simpler & clearer. And changes to design always make the package manager unusuable - almost all the mods i had to apply manually.
Sometimes i think of switching to other boards - but absence of "converters from smf to..." stop me! And probably the fact that since i spent so much time with smf - i start loving it! :D
is there any mod..
that when you view a board..
you need to be in a specific group...
but you still can see the board in index page..
just that you can't view all the topics and post in it...
because i dont want people to think that my forum only have a few boards..
because the boards can only be view by the group..
and also guest can see all the boards.. but i dont want them to see the topics inside... the only way not to let them see is to hide it..
that means that it will be like a blank forum with nothing..

Nope i deleted them all, i had swedish lang. files before and what i can see so is there no new swe.lang - files ready yet. So i tried both to just remove the swedish files only, didn´t help so i deleted the english too. And i have tried so many other ways to but with the same result. If i manually change the URL way from step 0 (where the error msg comes) to step 1 im coming to the next window and there ít says everything has updated successfully ........ but then it is not possible to go any further. i know that is wrong but i had to try ??? After that my whole site is down with only this msg :

Disable search engine friendly URL's in 'Features and settings'. They're not supported by the Mambo bridge you're using.

2. - MOST importanly - now the above errors have been fixed - I try and post in the forum and I get the following error ~: The board you specified doesn't exist

I got it to work by putting in a & instead of a ;.
When you turned on SEF in Mambo, you were supposed to rename a file from htaccess.txt to .htaccess.
When you turned it off, did you change that back?
:-X ermm No. So I have done what you sugested - went into the folder - renamed the file to 123.htaccess, went back to the site - reloaded and its still doing it.

he said just .htaccess not 123.htaccess
sorry - I did not explain it properly - I went to the root - and found the file .htacess I then renamed it to 123.htacess thus stopping the 'safe urls' I will keep trying to find out whats gone wrong. thanks, the renaming of the .htaccess to an alternative has not done anything yet

I'm having a similar problem to this. Thread here http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=56299.0 if anyone has any ideas please? :)
1: I did replace the files and ran the upgrade script
2: I used Gg-Gt Chameleon Theme by koni which is made for 1.1
Did you use 1.1 rc 1 versioned theme?
I think so. Here is the forum link:

Also, where is the news/newsletter section?
I upgraded to 1.1rc1 today, from 1.05.
I have this post from a member using safari:
QuoteOkay, so normally I look in my unread replies and I click on the 'new' button with takes me to a message post I've already seen. Normally when I click on the new button next to the message it will load the page and take me to the first unread reply on that post. Now when I click new it loads the post as if I had not read the message at all - so it is at the first post. I hope this makes sense.
I have not used personally used the unread messages thing, so I am not sure of the action. This member is a mod, and has been on the board since the beginning.
any thoughts?

I couldn't find any references to this problem in my search for "calendar error", so in case it hasn't been brought to your attention before, I thought I should mention it here... The week number display in the calendar is wrong. It becomes very apparent when you look at December (http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?action=calendar;year=2005;month=12) and see that week one comes before New Year's.
For those that are tracking the URL problem that leads to a false DB error, I found a solution that works for me.
In Admin > server settings:
If I put http://www.xarcel.com I get the DB error when viewed.
If I put http://xarcell.com I get the DB error when viewed.
If I put www.xarcell.com I get http://www.xarcell.com/index.php/www when viewed.
If I put in xarcell.com I get http://www.xarcell.com/

i hate this release
i just uploaded all the files of RC1
and now when i try to install any package in RC1.
it gives this error
Error in Package Installation
At least one error was encountered during a test installation of this package. It is strongly recommended that you do not continue with installation unless you know what you are doing, and have made a backup very recently. This error may be caused by a conflict between the package you're trying to install and another package you have already installed, an error in the package, a package which requires another package that you don't have installed yet, or a package designed for another version of SMF.
NOT EVEN a SINGLE MOD, i am able to install
i hate this
SMF 1.05 was 1000 times better
now i got to upload all files again
You must be one of the few who do not like 1.1rc. As the package manager suggests maybe you are not using the right package? Upgrading generally goes without issue and is simple as uploading the upgrade package and running upgrade.php.
There is nothing written in stone that you must use 1.1rc anyway obviously. I personally would recommend that anyone upgrade to 1.1rc.

Admin -> Permissions -> Settings
Enable post-based group permissions (or something like that)
no. that's not it. 1) that is already enabled and 2) i dont want set any permissions, i want to send newsletters TO post-based groups, like I did in beta3 and before
any comments on why I can't send newsletters to groups anymore?
I tried to search if this problem was reported here or not.
I upgraded from 1.0.1 to 1.1 RC1, had few problems in the beginign but all went fine.
The only problem I noticed so far is that the spell check doesn't work anymore. I get no message, it is just that when I press the spell check button nothing happens.

As redone suggested, you might try making sure that the package you are trying to upload was written/updated for 1.1 rc1 and not for 1.0.5. There are plenty of changes from one to the other that would throw the errors that you mentioned. The same thing goes for themes - many of them will install/work, but will give errors in unexpected places.

I have tried to install the smf1.1rc1 three times now and I get this error everytime.

The package you tried to upload either is not a valid package or has become corrupted.
This is on a fresh 1.0.5 that I just installed to put this update on to test out.
SMF 1.1 can't be installed through the package manager I'm afraid (It's just too big an update). You need to upload all the files in the "upgrade" archive to your forum directory. Once you have done this go to your website address and access upgrade.php.
Alternatively read this:

You also might want to be sure you aren't using an older theme with 1.1 RC1, as there have been numerous changes to the themeing system since 1.0.1.
An odd place to put this, but I've heard rumblings about SMF 1.1 RC2.

Just curious, but when is it to be released, and how much adaptation from 1.1 RC1 will we need as far as our themes and mods go?

A note:
I just installed SMF 1.1 RC1 fresh on an IIS5 / php 5.1.1(isapi) / MySQL 5.0.15 server.
If I put the new MySQL 5 files: (http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=55616.0;attach=11890)
into the folder before install, the install fails after entering the admin acount info with the following error:

The install works if the new files are not used. I placed the new files in the forums folder after installation and it seems OK now.
Left unattended for a few hours that forum install crashed php altogether on that server, affecting several other websites. >:(
I guess the Access Violation errors continued until they crashed php.
Not happy. Not happy at all. I was under the impression that 1.1-rc1 was supposed to be an improvement.
No. I will not rollback my php version.
I will try SMF 1.0.5 instead. It should be more stable hopefully.
Then back to writing a proper search script for 1.0.5 on our main site if I can figure out that abomination of a permissions system in 1.0.5.

Thumbsdown on SMF 1.1-rc1 big time. It clearly needs a whole lot of work before it can be used on live sites.

Oh, I suppose I should be running Apache1.3.33 php 4.3.7 on Redhat or some such solution I suppose? <rolls eyes>
phpBB 2.0.18 works flawlessly on IIS5 php 5.1.1, the problem is with SMF 1.1 rc-1.
SMF 1.0.5 works pretty good on our Apache 2.2.0 (Win32) / php 5.1.1 server, except the search function is absolutely hideous, one search will cripple the server totally for minutes at a time...
The current version of php is 5.1.1. That is what actively supported php applications should run on. IIS is a perfectly respectable webserver, though I like apache better... so much so that I compiled 2.2.0 win32 binaries and the corresponding php module myself.
Bottom line:
You are just plain wrong.
:P
Edit: The best webserver I worked on was apache 2 php 5 I compiled and statically linked on QNX 6; rock solid and lightning fast.
I don't want to press de dev team, but I sure think that some sort roadmap with a rough time frame estimation of when versions come out would help people running SMF. Now I know RC2 is coming out pretty soon, but what then? Is the final version like a month away or more like half a year?
Bonk - Can you start a topic detailing your problems with 1.1 on your platform in the [[General discussion and feedback]] board. This will enable the developers to track down your issues easier.
Oh and FWIW, I thought your comments over @ phpbb.com were a bit harsh. SMF's search feature has been rewritten in 1.1 and works perfectly fine. Yes 1.0x's search feature has issues, but then it's perfectly normal not to backport new features in to an older line. Indeed phpBB 2x has had no new features added like SMF 1.0.x. The difference is SMF 1.1 will actually be released in the not too distant future, phpBB users have been waiting over 2 years for phpBB 3.
Also I'm not sure where you find the code bloated and as for permissions, yes they can be hard to understand / configure, but thats a price to pay for the flexibility they offer.

There is no roadmap because things are subject to change, more so in a project like SMF where all the coding is done as and when the devs have time to fit it in round their real life.

Not trying to agrue, trying to find out where it is that your falling over with it. Access Violation errors could mean anything, is there anything in the error log, bear in mind I'm unfamiliar with IIS.
The reason I suggested posting in the general discussion & feedback board is your posts will easilly get lost in this long topic.

I can perfectly understand the motivation for not giving out dates. But that's not what I was asking for, rather for the
magnitude of time till final. Progress reports would do it, too.
Each release is usually a few months apart. Major releases will probably be about a year apart. They wont give out more specific dates, so I wouldn't push any further, or it'll cause more arguments.
I'd expect RC2 will be out within a month, depending on how stable that is will determine how long before 1.1 Final is out.

Apologies for my overly negative reaction to SMF's failure on IIS5/php5.1.1(isapi).
It occured to me today that it is possible that the isapi caching function of IIS may have issues with php 5.1.1 which are not revealed by phpBB but are by SMF.
As SMF's unorthodox use of function recursion (at least for php, function recursions greater than 1000 calls are known to crash php) has also revealed the failings of both eAcclerator and APC on php 5.1.1 where other php applications do not.
Two options here: eliminate the use of function recursion in SMF, or wait for Microsoft, eAccelerator and APC to achieve compliance with the revised Zend engine 2, or do not use caching applications of any kind when running SMF.
I will give SMF another try on IIS5/php5.1.1 with isapi caching disabled at a later date when I have the time and inclination.
I would not say SMF has an unorthodox use of function recursion at all. It's used rarely, but appropriately. Due the way SMF approaches security all incoming variables are cleaned ($_POST, $_GET and server vars). The *only* way to do this properly is through function recursion. It will never get more than a couple of layers deep, and I would very much consider it a bug in PHP, IIS or otherwise if it cannot handle the very small amount of recursion SMF uses.
This is the first time I've ever heard of this problem, and it sounds very much like a bug in the build you are using. Everything in the SMF code is perfectly legal. Bear in mind that I believe Ben runs an accelerator (eAccelerator) with SMF without issue. Also, at the very least vBulletin also uses recursion so if it is a bug with PHP it needs fixing.

Function recursion is known to crash php since a few versions back. If it is only called a few times then you're OK though. still excessive preg_* function calls in php will create a nasty serverload on the windows platform.
QuoteIt is possible to call recursive functions in PHP. However avoid recursive function/method calls with over 100-200 recursion levels as it can smash the stack and cause a termination of the current script.

Re eAcclerator: it is not compatible with the revised Zend engine 2 of php 5.1.1. If you will read the above you will see that Ben is running php 4.4.1. <sigh>

They have known for some time and have not addressed it.
Neither is APC compatible with php 5.1.1. Niether is Turck MMCache.
Only the Zend Optimiser 2.6.0 is currently compatible with php 5.1.1.
See my posts toward the end of this thread:

Also see my posts on the eAcclerator forums on sourceforge.
Because of this, we are considering rolling back our apache server to 1.3.34 and php to 4.4.1...

The IIS server we are running on another box runs phpBB just fine on php 5.1.1:
http://sfc2.net/forums/
I know what I'm talking about, trust me...
edit: also note that as I stated above, I suspect the issue on IIS5 is in the isapi caching function as currently NOBODY can cache php 5.1.1. (without errors)
Bonk,
You have to bear in mind that I do not have the time to read through every post in every topic. Nor do I have the time to read the PHP manual from cover to cover. If accelerators have not been updated for the latest version of PHP this is not my concern. The only thing that I care about is that SMF is written to work on all valid (and even not so valid) server configurations - and is optimised for the current issue of software.
As I've already stated, SMF does not use several hundred levels of recusion - it uses it as appropriate for the functionality. I'd be in full agreement that if a function is recursing hundreds of times there is something seriously wrong.
As far as preg_* on windows not working well goes - that's very much a platform issue. preg_ functions are used in SMf for very good reason, writing a custom regex function in PHP would clearly be slower.
I'm more than happy to work with people to make SMF work on their current server configuration, but only if it's vaguely sensible. Forgive me if I'm wrong (As I've said - I don't have time to dedicate to every topic) - you are trying to run SMF 1.1 on PHP 5.1.1 with an accelerator that doesn't work on 5.1.1 - I can't see how you can blame SMF for not working in this situation.
I believe that you are basically in agreement with me (i.e. ISAPI plain doesn't work caching PHP 5.1.1) - but if this is the case then I don't see why you decided to write a ranting post about it in the first instance, without ensuring that it was, indeed, a problem with SMF.

Grudge
PS - I've had 5 pints and a bottle of wine so forgive any incohersion :)
Hear hear!

Bonk,
You have to bear in mind that I do not have the time to read through every post in every topic. Nor do I have the time to read the PHP manual from cover to cover. If accelerators have not been updated for the latest version of PHP this is not my concern. The only thing that I care about is that SMF is written to work on all valid (and even not so valid) server configurations - and is optimised for the current issue of software.

I figured out one, in your posts there is like a small picture thing of a piece of paper and a pen going in it, click on it and your post comes up like a quick post for editing.
Yup thats one inline editing. ;)

Did you run upgrade.php?
yes :D
Were there any errors during upgrade? You might want to try uploading all files again, using a different ftp-client and run upgrade.php again. Maybe something went wrong during upload.
Is it just me or is "Quick Reply" option not there?
How do i set it on?

I seem to be having a problem with RC1.
i updated just yesterday from 1.0.5 to 1.1RC1.
Although the board manager in the admin section displays the boards in the correct order (as they were pre-update), the board index does not, rather it displays the categories and boards in wrong order. Does anybody have a clue why?
my board is at www.opadoi.gr/forum/
Switching a board back and forth should fix that issue. Or a query:
ALTER TABLE smf_boards
ORDER BY boardOrder
If you did not let the upgrade.php script run completely, you will also have this problem...
Going from 1.0.5 I had to upload files to do the upgrade. Will I be able to use the package manager now to go from 1.1rc1?
The package manager can only be used for minor updates I'm afraid. That said, I hope the next version of SMF will make it all possible via the Package Manager.

That indeed would be great! ;)
Yeah, I too would hope to see this as an upgraded feature... ;D

The big updates can't be used in the package manager due to the php execution limits (how long php can do it for)
