Title: hope this is easy ? trying to recover after domain fwd
Post by: TheDragon on May 03, 2013, 12:36:31 AM
situation (hope I can make the following clear enough)

I have my main .com at the host provider
(eg TheeDragon DOT com)

I registered a DOT com for my church
(eg church DOT com) and had it mapped as an alias domain with my host
(ie typical for small hosted accounts)
so the DNS for church DOT com pointed direct to the folder under TheeDragon DOT com
(eg TheeDragon DOT com/AliasFolder/index.html resolved to same as Church Dot com

then I installed my forum [SMF 2.0 RC1.2] in a folder under alias folder above and called it Forum
all worked PERFECT
last year - the church elected to have its site hosted by a CHURCH hosting company
so = I domain fwd the URL to the other hosting company - who built a whole new site
now a new church wants me to make them a site
I can still show my old site - by simply entering TheeDragon Dot com/Alias folder
and all works (had to go back in and rec-code some of links to read thee dragon dot come / alias vs church dot com
all was easy
BUT the forum has lost it css
I am hoping it is easy to re-point it somehow
so = before I start   making bad guesses and breaking something
must be an instruction for renaming the host URL ?

FYI  - cannot login - as it seams to point to a bad URL for all PHP stuff as well
yes - I can do FTP and simple PHP edits if needed

unless you or your tech guys figured out the hooks system (no offense intended, but, based on your previous questions, I am assuming not), it has to have been added in subs.php (like this: http://wiki.simplemachines.org/smf/Buttons_-_How_do_I_add_buttons_to_SMF_2.0)

@Kindred, referring to the above, most of the hooks changes were in RC4.

Congratulations on using a forum that's 4 years old with a raft of known security vulnerabilities and bugs.

[SMF 2.0 RC1.2]

Quoteran fine doe 2 years when installed in 2009 / had no issuse

There are something like 65 vulnerabilities fixed in your installation which is a beta version and came with a very large warning to NOT USE ON PRODUCTION SITES, not to mention hundreds of bug fixes that have come with it.

eek...  I missed that completely.

Dragon, you need to update ASAP. Not just for "working" but because RC1.2 has numerous KNOWN security issues that could compromise your whole server.
Additionally, we don't support the RC versions.

Quotebecause RC1.2 has numerous KNOWn securitoy issues that could compromise your whole server.

Technically, the worst single vulnerability around that time that could compromise an entire server was fixed with RC1-1 (the krisbarteo incident). And it would be fair to say that no individual vulnerability could do that. However, it is certainly feasible to chain two or three of the vulnerabilities that are present, and escalate it that way.

argh = ok - warnings noted
I made many many hand codes to look and feel
(colors. borders. icons. etc)
this site will not be used - just a demo for me to show to church
so . . .
an idea - without upgrading - which will surely break my customization
what SINGLE edit ( or small group of edits ) can I make to 'turn off the forum'
then edit 'back on' for a demo / then off?

hmmm . . . maybe I will also just make a demo video of it working >?

but = back to my question - can I change a file name or something to break it ?
eg index.html to index. html~ and/or index.php to index.php~

thanks guys

ps
there are about 50 hard coded links in my website that target specific boards/posts
eg http://www.site DOT com/st/Forum/index.php?board=105.0

ummm.... seriously, you would demo an outdated and buggy version?

ah - YES = for the look and feel / that works just fine . and worked perfect for 2 years till we no longer need it
this is HIGHLY integrated within my website
Title: Re: hope this is easy ? trying to recover after domain fwd
Post by: Kindred on May 03, 2013, 11:40:42 AM
if it is highly integrated, then I would argue that it is even more important to update since one of the 65 security issues or several hundred bug fixes could have seriously adverse effects on your site as well as your forum.

Anyway...   I have no idea where the menu array was kept in RC1.2 - as I said, we don't really support RCs, especially not once the final release has been made.

The 'Core' theme that RC1.2 uses is still available and bundled with 2.0.4. So you really have no argument other than 'I can't be bothered'.

The menu array is in the same place, incidentally.

 in SUBS.php
I searched on the word "James" as it is hard coded; it was not found
ergo = I thought I guessed wrong php file, and came to support section to ask which file to use
you all said = subs (as I had originally guessed)
then I looked harder and found this (which I presume is result of a mod?) called 'custom_tab_1.2
'custom' => array(
'title' => !empty($modSettings['custom_tab_label']) ? $modSettings['custom_tab_label'] : $txt['custom_tab_label_default'],
'href' => !empty($modSettings['custom_tab_execute_url']) ? $modSettings['custom_tab_execute_url'] : $scripturl,
'show' => $user_info['is_guest'] ? !empty($modSettings['custom_tab_enable_guest_access']) : !empty($modSettings['custom_tab_enable_member_access']),
'sub_buttons' => array(
),

therefore I deduced not hard coded
so, went to mods section of SMF and found the old zip
tried to parse - could not / as deprecated
so I DL the ZIP / opened it / studied the code/ and found some hints = to go into the
Admin -> Configuration -> Modifications -> Custom Tab (SMF 2.0)

and edit the options (one which as the link address)

which I did and now works as desired

thanks all

ps

when I went in as admin, to make the edits
got the warning - to delete repair-php
did not know I should have
Is that global knowledge to the casual user ?
if not - perhaps  - it might be coded into the page (if not already there and I just missed it)

you should never leave any utility that directly accesses your server settings...  and no, that warning is not shown to everyone, just to admins

noted - thanks
can I humbly suggest that the warning be added INSIDE the utility
to tell the user to delete from forum after it used ?

That would imply that users actually read the instructions given to them, which it is clear they do not.

if you leave it, it tells you when you load the forum (as you noticed)... :)  just like install.php

and after all, if you're messing around with things, you might want to leave it there while your mess around.
