So I am getting this error when I run the converter

Sorry, the database connection information used in the specified installation of SMF cannot access the installation of PHP-Nuke 7.9. This may either mean that the installation doesn't exist, or that the Database account used does not have permissions to access it.

The error that was received from the Database was: SELECT command denied to user 'john1974_smf430'@'localhost' for table 'nuke_users'

I added the smf user to my phpnuke database but I still get the error? thoughts?

Clearly its permission issue, may you double password etc. for the given user.

I suggest you to get db backup then install SMF on phpnuke db (Use 1 db / 1 username). Its more healthy (unfortunately).
