I need some support if you can help me with ideas, links to any mods or anything that will help me on what i am trying to do.
What i am looking to do is split my forum into two separate forums in a sense the idea would be when a person goes into the forum they would be greeted with the main forum which is the main content of my website and above this forum would be two tabs. The first tab would be what shows the main content of my forum the second tab would switch to the other forum which would be general discussion.
I have not long ago installed the tabs mod and if you see the screen shot below you will see how it's produced it (yes it will need theme edits properly if i decide to use it). In a sense this is what i am after as i could easily just merge everything into two category's which would produce the two separate forums sections.
but the problem with this is it would be really messy and cluttered if i merged everything into the two category's. So my question is how would i go about getting my forum into two sections which shows the main content and the option to switch to general content.
i hope this all makes sense :P
Thanks
what you are asking for is contrary to the general nature of a forum and the specific design of SMF.
So, you can basically do what you have asked by using the tabs mod... and that's about it...
You could try the subforums mod, but you need separate urls for that
being simplistic... If you wanna do something, like that, why not have two forum sites, linked from a common front page?
Or, am I missing something? (https://www.simplemachines.org/community/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.katzy.dsl.pipex.com%2FSmileys%2Fc018.gif&hash=dbf6b10ad78cd31a57feae3f0016b14d8d2c90fa)
he probably wants to share users and profiles, etc...
Oh, yeah. Good finkin', Batman!
Maybe I'm not seeing it in full, but the tabbed categories with a custom BoardIndex wouldn't solve it?
It seems that the OP wishes fits here, no?
I was thinking of two separate forums but though it might be a pain to set up user profiles, setting, mods etc and a mod or some edits to the forum might be better than having two forums and having to do things twice. I did a around a year ago see something like what i am after but i think that was based around the tabs mod.
The tabs mod in a way does the job i am asking but i would prefer if i could get say a bunch of category's in one tab and a bunch in another. I know i could create two tabs and just move all the child boards of each category into both tabs but this would be rather messy unless i had a way of splitting them to look like a standard forums category's list.
I never noticed the sub forums mod although i will check out out Cheers :)
form the original post, I think his complaint is that he doesn't want to stick all the boards into just two categories
he wants tabs, each with multiple categories and multiple boards...

That's exactly it ;)

You can, with some edit to BoardIndex.template.php
TBH, I probably can't help you in this (I hate design :P ) but one of our templates geeks probably will ;)
ETA: Just sayin' that, while there isn't a MOD that does EXACTLY want you want, it should be possible to make it happen ;)
I wouldn't know how to edit the boardindex.template.php and do what i am looking to do or i would of used the tab mod and created two tabs and then added all of the category's in and separated them like a standard forum has.
You'll excuse me but I didn't understand nothing of what you're saying... That sentence makes no sense, please use some punctuation...

Lol, sorry, but if you are going to insist on correct punctuation, you should at least sort out your own major 'fail'.
I'm not going down that road. Thank you for the note ;)
You must excuse my punctuation i was never any good in english.
Anyway i have come up with an idea which could work but unsure so thought i would run it through you lot. I was thinking what if i merged all the child boards into two category's which would mean i would get two tabs. And both tabs i click would give me two sections the main forum and the second forum.
Then i was thinking what if i could take the child boards of each tab and split them as in there would be still two tabs with lists but each list would have spaces in them like so.

and after i have split them i add a header into the space after each split IE

I know this would mean editing the boardindex.template.php but i feel this would be one way of doing what i am looking to do. I did check out subforums mod but not sure if it is exactly what i am after as i would prefer one forum that when loaded has two sections.
Anyway thanks for all your support so far :)
That approach was pretty much what I was suggesting. 2 categories and a change to board index to design it to your needs;)
In which case I am moving this out of support since you are asking for something completely custom - not support of an smf problem or feature
