without Ad Management mod

Are you are referring to the last post in the topic? If so the ad management mod would be the easiest way to add it. But since you are against that, you will have to manually edit your themes Display.template.php and place your ad code there.

That is rather difficult to do without know what code you plan on inserting. Why are you against the ad management mod?
