packages backup seems to be using most of my total forum space usage... is it safe to delete these or not?

That will give you back a very small amount of memory. Who is your host and how much memory do they allocate you for both files and database.
Sounds like you mat want to consider a new host.
this has nothing to do with memory, but server hd space instead.
In the context that ftab4me is talking, he's not totally wrong. Quite a lot of people refer to disk space as memory, nowadays.

This is not a case of linguistic drift - the words have very specific meanings in the case of tehcnology, and if we do not correct people to use the correct word, then they will continue to refer to things incorrectly, thus confusing matters.

People will call things whatever they like. A great number of people call hard disk space "Memory".
But, some would argue that disk space is RAM, which is Random Access Memory, just as a USB stick is known as a "Memory stick".
So, whilst not being entirely correct, he's not wrong, either.

Well, it was dem Yanks wot changed "Fora" to "Forums".
RAM memory is randomly accessed, which is exactly what a hard disk does.
Now, when I sat my A+/N+ course, we were told that RAM is volatile. When you turn the power off, it gets wiped clean. But, we were also told that, as with "Forums", things become acceptable with use (Again, mainly by the Amercians, oddly enough), as it were, and, even back then, the term was OK. We wouldn't fail the exam, if we called that kind of thing RAM, which is memory.
Of course, come the exam, we made damned sure we didn't. ;)
ummm... but no. Disks are not RAM. They are not randomly accessed.
And there is NV RAM and V RAM (neither of which is a disk drive)
As I said, I totally agree. But, common-usage is beating both of us, unfortunately.
Oops, I've called it a "memory stick" for years even though I know it's a misnomer. I think I started off calling it a "flash drive" or "usb stick" around the turn of the century. My favourite name for it is a "wand" but too few people know what I'm talking about to actually call it that.
I guess the term's become used, in that way, because HHDs, sticks and the like remember things and people equate remembering with memory.
I'm sure my own memory's volatile RAM...
It remembers what you tell it to remember, therefore memory is not entirely wrong :P

Still it could be what my mother calls them, which is 'fizzy stick', though I have no idea *why*.
It isn't helped by the fact that hard drives can now have solid-state components, aka flash memory (ack) or even be totally just SSDs...

I certainly did not mean to start a big debate here when I used the generic term memory to ask about disk space made available from his host for his files and database. If the OP is worried about the small amount of memory or disk space if you prefer that he could recover, it would appear he is very limited and might want to think about changing hosts if true.
BTW: We always called USB Memory Sticks as Jump Drives!
Hopefully we will hear back from the OP as I am interested in hearing who his host is and how much disk space and thus memory they allocated to him.
