Title: "View Active Topics"?
Post by: khigh on January 09, 2014, 12:59:12 PM
Apparently this is one of those things that I know what I want, but the words I say and what searches think I'm talking about are two different things.

So this is oversimplified - please excuse that.

I'm looking for a feature/mod equivalent to what's called called "View Active Topics" on PHPBB.

And I'd like it up in the top left area up by your avatar in the vicinity of where it says "Show unread posts since last visit" with the difference being that they could have been read.

I get a lot of people that check in mobile, and read a question, but can't give the complex and thoughtful answer needed from a phone so they think "I'll answer that when I get home". But then they have to dig through all the boards to find the topic again if no one else has posted on it. With something similar to that "View active topics" feature, they could just click that instead of unread and pick it up say 10, 12 down the list if it's been a couple hours.

I even installed a mod after searching that I misread somehow as it was going to do that, but it didn't. It was called "Recent Topics On "Recent Posts" Page", but as far as I can tell it hasn't done anything. It could just be a misunderstanding involving me not having any idea what a "Recent Posts Page" is. But it's not doing what I want in any case.

Can anyone help?

Thanks

There was another recent request for this and, AFAIK, there isn't such a mod

The 'mark unread' button is your friend. Perhaps we should rename it 'remind me later about this topic' ;)

MEANWHILE

I have a user complaining that "Recent Posts aren't updating!!" I assume I broke it with the mod I never could figure out what id did.

I guess I could ask him, but I STILL haven't found "recent posts".

What/where is that?

Recent posts is shown on the board index, in the info centre, where it says 'view the most recent posts in the forum'. There's also a list of posts you can add there (like we have) but both are cached to prevent the server being hammered.

Huh - thanks for the pointer but I'm still stumped.

I see it on this board. This board has two sections mine don't have - Recent Posts and Calendar up above the two sections mine do have - stats and users.

So still don't know what my user is complaining about. I could (and will) just remove the mod I installed, but I sure wish I knew what seemingly perfectly normal thing about my own forum I'm incapable of seeing.

Recent posts is something you can enable in your ACP (as well as calendar, if you use it)

I think I'm seeing that now - that it's something that's not enabled. Which answers the question of why I couldn't find it/wasn't familiar with it, but not why one of my users is complaining about it.

If I click recent posts on this board I come up with a URL that ends in "action=recent". If I go drop that on  my board, it gives recent posts. So apparently he got it from somewhere else and brought it to the board. I'm torn now between fixing it and saying "Hey - quit using unsupported stuff!".

As to the original question, I'll leave it unchecked for a little while - thanks for the answer of "no mod", but I'll keep my fingers crossed that someone's JUST completed one and needs it beta tested.

action=recent is on every site, even those who don't have the list of recent posts.

No such mod has been submitted to the customization team for review, so you're still out of luck.

Maybe not the best option, but you could install the Bookmarks (http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=864) mod.

That would help with

Seriously, mark unread was added for precisely this reason ;)

Wouldn't the mileage of this method depend on how active your forum was? As there could be 20 or 100 new posts/topics since marking a post as unread. In that case, I would probably go with the bookmark mod in that scenario, either that or some sort of visual marker to mark favourite threads (not that this exists).

In a perfect world, they'd be using Chrome or Firefox on their smartphones and having synced bookmarks on the device, or sharing tabs between desktop and phone etc.

Sure, but you still should be taken back to the point you were at... I should note, this is precisely the method I use here, and I have multiple devices from which I browse (and don't use FF or similar to sync them, I let the site do it for me)

I have been looking for the same feature but I have found out that portal mods like Ezportal have built in blocks that can display active topics.

Here is an example with ezPortal's "Recent topics" block in a custom page:
