Needed to change the way the SSI introduces the recent topics, but whenever I change the form (html/css) it gives me error and the page (outside of smf) appears blank..

When you get a blank page, what does it say in your servers error_log?
And why are you changing the ssi code itself?
You do know that you can output the contents of the ssi call as an array and format it any way you want during readout instead of trying to change the function itself?

What kindred said is true. Don't change the raw code. I would give you an example if I was in front of my computer on how you can do it the right, and more elegant way...
