Oh, this is quite useful since it promotes the discussions... thanks! Works beautifully!

Would it possible to make it collapsible though?

My users seem to like it, however they already suggested making it collapsible :D Another small (?) request: could it  be shortened to one line - that is, omit the second line from the table?

Oh, and I think it broke Tapatalk...

Dont know i have to look into that.

also do to is that it will work with the global topic mod, ill work on that when the author of that mod will update it, as it has some bugs into it.

Very nice mod, thank you.

When using with SimplePortal, it uses the full width of the page (like a header), shifting all my left and right blocks down.

Is there a way to make it take up the same width as the forum topics (in the body, not header), so the left/right blocks remain in place?

Or is it me?

Thanks.

Nevermind about the screenshot or site link, i figured out what you mean, i have a solution for that but it takes a file edit and some code to a portal costum php block, ill post that later, i'm testing first to be sure it will not mess up any/your forum. Btw with adding code to portal php block you can also choose to collapse the thingy  :P

Heres a screenshot on a new site i'm currently working on, ive been testing on that one.

Can you install the RecentForumTopics mod agian, and after that replace this file(see attachment)--> Subs-RecentForumTopics.php in Folder ../Sources, be sure to make a backup of that file first before replacing,

If you done that could you reply to this topic and tell me if it works or not, thx

i've just installed this mod on my forum (new install 2.0.7) and have a few issues with it.

First issue I have is I have it installed it along side nchat shoutbox and whenever recent topic is enabled it stops nchat shoutbox from work. (nchat doesnt display previous shouts or allow you to add new shouts) but if i disable recent topics it works fine.

Second is placement, with this mod installed i get recent topics, shoutbox, forum index
is there anyway I can move it so its shoutbox, recent topics, board index?

Title: Re: Recent Forum Topics on Boardindex

Is it possible that the mod only picks new topics added based on the first post. It shouldn't consider replies to designate the recent activity.

Secondly, how to make the mod only pick topics from certain boards and not from all of them.

First: The mod nchat wich you are using is for smf 2.0.1 my fix solution is to install simpleportal they have a shoutbox implented, and i know that its shoutbox work well with my mod. (see screenshot in above post).

Second: As far as i know you cant fix the placement because nchat is hardcoded and my mod uses hooks. The hook ads the RecenForumTopics right after the Header.

Thank you advice Pipke, i like using nchat as the shoutbox works perfect on the mobile theme. and no real need for a portal page :)

I thank you for your work.

This Mod is very fantastic

I am a Korean. So to speak English is not very good. Please understand that

I hope that the next version of this Mod will include functions of 'roll up'.

and

How can I report language pack for this mod?

Additionally, I noticed in that screenshot that the member names were colored in your mod, but in the current version I do not have colors (but they are seen elsewhere in the forums).  I am using mod "Member Color Link 3.1 " to show the colors.  Is this not compatible?

Thanks again for your nice work.

After install it, singe category mod stops working  (you can't view single category) and you can't collapse forums.

I'd like to know if you could post what would be needed to make a custom php block for this to show?
I use SimplePortal, and on the main page, I'd like this to be in the middle (top) blocks area.
I figure, instead of file edits, having this mod set to Disable Recent Forum Topics only from the Frontpage with SimplePortal, then use a block to add it wherever we want.

You mean like the screenshot on this post (http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=522114.msg3695375#msg3695375)
This can only be done/activated on homepage(portal), boardindex, some actions and pages with simpleportal and NOT at BOARD pages cos it will mess up the code.
If thats the case you want, let me know and ill make a php file to do so, and then you can add a new php block with some code.

I'd just want it for the "Portal" page.
That would be the only setting I'd set the block to display on. :)

ok here we go, it should work for now, use at own risk!

Upload file from attachment (RecentForumTopicsBlock.php) of this post with ftp to folder ../Sources

Then create/add with simpleportal a costum php block(only top/bottom, not header/left/right) and add this code to it:
global $sourcedir;
include("$sourcedir/RecentForumTopicsBlock.php");

Don't forget to set display/style settings etc then save it and you should be good to go.(do NOT use 'SELECT BOARDS' in the advanced options)

Hi there

Thanks for the mod it's great and exactly what I needed for my forum! There is just one problem, my forum requires a login to see any content on the forum. The problem is the Recent Topics board shows up on the login page so the public can see the Recent Topics which I don't want. I don't see any way to change the permissions?

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance!

Not quite easy. Because theAds mod is added to SMF with changing the core template files and NOT with hooks (no editting core files) like my mod does, but it can be done.

Try this at own risk(make backup of the files your going to change):

Remove this code from ./Themes/{Your theme}/BoardIndex.template.php

//Display ads on the board index
if (function_exists("show_boardAds"))
{
$ads = show_boardAds();
if(!empty($ads))
if($ads['type']==0)
echo $ads['content'];
else
eval($ads['content']);
unset($ads);
}

and in ./Themes/default/RecentForumTopics.template.php
find

global $context, $settings, $scripturl, $modSettings, $txt, $boarddir;

replace with

global $context, $settings, $scripturl, $modSettings, $txt, $boarddir;

//Display ads on the board index
if (function_exists("show_boardAds"))
{
$ads = show_boardAds();
if(!empty($ads))
if($ads['type']==0)
echo $ads['content'];
else
eval($ads['content']);
unset($ads);
}

Not sure if it works, but it should i guess.
NOTE. this will break the uninstall of the AdsMod.

Hi there,
great mod which works perfectly!
Only one question, would it be possible to have the recent topics block on the bottom part of the page? i.e. where recent posts block was placed...
I do not see any option about that.

thanks!

working on a updated version, be patience its almost done.

Wonderful mod. I'm having an issue with collapsing categories though with this mod installed. Whenever I try to collapse one, it collapses the same category each time.

Hello!

Today I installed a new mod that makes the forum responsive, but the Recent Forum Topics mod shows up really screwed... So I was wondering if you could make it so it's responsive as well?

Thanks!

Try to resize your browser and shrink it so that the responsive stuff kicks in and see how it looks ;)

Hey guys, sorry it took me so long (went to bed :D ).

Here's what it looks like. Admittedly, I've got to do further testing to check if its this mod's issue or not...

Thanks for the response!

Btw, the forum is located at www.cpcwiki.eu/forum .

Today I installed a new mod that makes the forum responsive, but the Recent Forum Topics mod shows up really screwed... So I was wondering if you could make it so it's responsive as well?

Thanks!
Quick fix: as i'm updating the mod with many more functions, i dont update the mod now and wait for my next big update release.

in RecentForumTopics.template.php
Find:

<th scope="col" class="first_th" width="8%" colspan="2">&nbsp;</th>';

Replace with:

<th scope="col" class="first_th hidden" width="8%" colspan="2">&nbsp;</th>';

Find:

<th scope="col" width="15%">', $txt['replies'], ' / ', $txt['views'], '</th>

Replace With:

<th scope="col" width="15%" class="hidden">', $txt['replies'], ' / ', $txt['views'], '</th>

Can you confirm all is ok now, if still any probs let me know?

Ahhhhh great!!!! Thanks so much :)

It's not perfect (see screenshots - it leaves a blank at the right), but that's a detail, we can wait for the update!

you forgot this edit then i think? cos it will hide the last blank colum.

Replace With:

Super mod, thank you for sharing it with the community.

One thing, it has a few issues on 2.0.10 with responsive curve installed. As you resize the page, the text doesn't have icons to switch to so they show as missing, and also some of the columns don't behave nicely. Can you give any hints as to which css and php files I'd want to tweak?

Thank you for your time,

-Johan

in Themes\{your_theme}\languages\RecentForumTopics.english-utf8.php and RecentForumTopics.english.php

change this line--> $txt['rft_name'] = 'Recent Forum Topics'; to your likenings wich is in your case 'Recent Topics'

so this

$txt['rft_name'] = 'Recent Forum Topics';

to this

$txt['rft_name'] = 'Recent Topics';

Different thing now.

I installed English.british as my default; could this be why I'm getting many errors in the logfile like:

http://extreme-macro.co.uk/forums/index.php? 8: Undefined index: current_board
File: /home/plat-linnas01/e/extreme-macro.co.uk/user/htdocs/forums/Themes/default/Display.template.php
Line: 883

Do I need to edit English.british to stop this?

many thanks,

-Johan

I could be wrong but as far as i know Display.template.php has nothing todo with this mod as my mod uses hooks only and doesnt modify the Display.template (any) file at all. You have to find the solution somewhere else to solve your error.

Fair enough, but I get the errors when I install the mod and none with it uninstalled again. it's even worse now with some other mods in. Clearly there must be conflicts there, but other than here I don't know where to post or how to start resolving it...

I do have the info centre commented out (I'd rather have yours!), but I uncommented it and that didn't change anything. I have no doubt that it could be my clumsy source edits that are responsible. are there any files that I could attach that would help you see what the issue might be, where I might be going wrong?

Thank you for your time,

-Johan

Hello again Pipke,

I read all the posts you ever made on the forum here but there's no clue to this issue. I understand this has an issue with tapatalk but I don't have that installed. I also looked through all posts here mentioning this mod, and again nothing sprung to mind.

I understand this uses hooks so shouldn't affect anything, and I confess to being relatively new here so don't fully get hooks yet. But does the data used by your hook depend on something that's been broken or altered by something else ($context?).

Beyond that, looking for other info to solve this, if it helps, I have a mod that shows integration hooks. This is the info that it shows over its 4 pages:

Your Display.php file is screwed up. I suggest you uninstall one by one each mod till the errors disappear. Then you can see wich mod it is.

Q: Does the errors you get only happens when you have actived/installed my mod?
Title: Re: Recent Forum Topics on Boardindex

Hello!!

Yes - it only happens if your mod is active.

I have 2 boards, identical mods on them

This with your mod: http://extreme-macro.co.uk/forumstest/index.php
This is same without: http://extreme-macro.co.uk/forums/index.php

I'm not sure about uninstalling 60 mods to find out why yours breaks everything :(. Clearly yours depends on being able to get something out for its display, and that "something" is either missing or changed. I was hoping you'd be able to tell me what that something is given all the information I've supplied, as much as I can find out my side.

If display is the problem, would you be able to attach a display that works for you so that I can go through it and try and work out the difference between what works for you and what doesn't work here?

when your inside/view a topic(like your screenshot), the Recent forum topics shouldnt be visible? So thats a thing that is wrong for sure.
My mod should be visible only when your on the boardindex.

Maybe this mod --> 57. Force Topic Read On Login Mod 2.1   [ Uninstall ] [ List Files ] [ Delete ]  breaks it.

Hello again, and thank you. That's the weird thing and why I'm trying to find a 'cause' before your mod, or rather with the data arriving at your mod. That was the index page!

I wasn't in a topic - let me show you a screengrab. Or try for yourself at the URL I've mentioned twice in this thread, you'll see the same - http://extreme-macro.co.uk/forumstest/index.php

So for some reason, with your mod, the index page thinks it's in a specific topic and that's why we get the display we get. Without your mod the page behaves as you'd expect, ie shows the forums index. So what I'm wondering is if you're calling something specific in your mod by number $someArray[1] expecting the value in that number to be something which it now isn't anymore, because it's been changed by something else.

Your forum is calling a topic (the display.php and display.template) when your on the index of the site, for sure thats wrong in my eyes. Wich mod does that trick for you?
Title: Re: Recent Forum Topics on Boardindex
Post by: roshaoar on May 11, 2015, 09:08:31 AM
Hello,

This is where my lack of SMF knowledge is telling because I thought that display and display.template were everything to do with anything but the forums index and that the problem here is that something seems to be getting into the forums display that shouldn't be? Sorry if this is wrong... I just don't know the software that well.

Neither of those have anything especially interesting in them, but I've attached them. See anything odd? I thought the problem would be in boardindex and the only unusual thing in there I thought was echoing out an ID of a topic to try and get at a thumbnail for it eventually.

fyi, I tried with a display file and a display template file from 2.0.10 clean install and it made no difference - same topic being shown, not the index
Title: Re: Recent Forum Topics on Boardindex
Post by: roshaoar on May 11, 2015, 11:26:54 AM
Also I noticed that in the buggy html below the "Recent Forum Topics" bloc, when logged in (ie seeing a comment rather than what you see, not available) the buttons all seem to call "topic=.0" (or some variant. Does this ring any bells - what would make it get that instead of what it's supposed to get? Would it help if I sent you a login to that testforum to see what I'm seeing?

In terms of trying some debugging, as I don't know smf all that well, where does the script action happen once the bloc is in - where is it getting the next bit from? Can I output an array there to see if something is wrong - which php file is responsible for the bit below yours?

Many thanks

Ok, big thanks to Pipke for having a look at my board with admin and FTP access. The upshot is that there's no identifiable cause for what I'm getting so we're really not much the wiser. Bound to be some mod conflict somewhere or my code tweaks foobaring it up.

Last Q though - my (very limited) understanding of mods and hooks and this mod is that instead of using the default boardindex, it used recentforumtopics and display instead. How does this happen (ie what is the bit of scripting that says "after recentforumtopics get display").

Many thanks again,

-Johan

I wonder that myself to. Some mod that you have installed is loading? the display.php file after my ( integrate_pre_include or themes) hook, and uses my last $topic array request  and prints the topic out on the boardindex, sorry i dont have any clue how to express this weird thing lol.

Just for the record. It looks as if the mod "POST & PM INLINE ATTACHMENTS By Dougiefresh" (http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=525705.0) is responsible for all the errors on my preceding posts. This seems to do something to display that I don't prefess to properly understand so I've let the author know.

yes, modify RecentForumTopics.php like this:

Code (find) Select

if (isset($_REQUEST['start']) && $_REQUEST['start'] > 95)
$_REQUEST['start'] = 95;

Code (replace with) Select

if (isset($_REQUEST['start']) && $_REQUEST['start'] > 45)
$_REQUEST['start'] = 45;

Code (find) Select

$context['page_index'] = constructPageIndex($scripturl . '?action=forum;c=' . implode(',', $_REQUEST['c']), $_REQUEST['start'], min(100, $total_cat_posts), $rft_per_page, false);

Code (replace with) Select

$context['page_index'] = constructPageIndex($scripturl . '?action=forum;c=' . implode(',', $_REQUEST['c']), $_REQUEST['start'], min(50, $total_cat_posts), $rft_per_page, false);

Code (find) Select

$context['page_index'] = constructPageIndex($scripturl . '?action=forum;boards=' . implode(',', $_REQUEST['boards']), $_REQUEST['start'], min(100, $total_posts), $rft_per_page, false);

Code (replace with) Select

$context['page_index'] = constructPageIndex($scripturl . '?action=forum;boards=' . implode(',', $_REQUEST['boards']), $_REQUEST['start'], min(50, $total_posts), $rft_per_page, false);

Code (find) Select

$context['page_index'] = constructPageIndex($scripturl . '?action=forum;board=' . $board . '.%1$d', $_REQUEST['start'], min(100, $total_posts), $rft_per_page, true);

Code (replace with) Select

$context['page_index'] = constructPageIndex($scripturl . '?action=forum;board=' . $board . '.%1$d', $_REQUEST['start'], min(50, $total_posts), $rft_per_page, true);

Code (find) Select

$query_parameters['max_id_msg'] = max(0, $modSettings['maxMsgID'] - 100 - $_REQUEST['start'] * 6);

Code (replace with) Select

$query_parameters['max_id_msg'] = max(0, $modSettings['maxMsgID'] - 50 - $_REQUEST['start'] * 6);

Code (find) Select

$context['page_index'] = constructPageIndex($scripturl . '?action=forum', $_REQUEST['start'], min(100, $modSettings['totalTopics']), $rft_per_page, false);

Code (replace with) Select

$context['page_index'] = constructPageIndex($scripturl . '?action=forum', $_REQUEST['start'], min(50, $modSettings['totalTopics']), $rft_per_page, false);

Think this should be enough to do the trick.

Pense had translated but it seems not good you went up attached files with the Latin translation into Spanish: D plus some more files add-rft.php, remove-rft.php and redirect.txt although I think are so important ???

Code (Line_17) Select

exit('<b>Error:</b> Cannot install - please verify you put this in the same place as SMF\'s index.php.');

exit('<b>Error:</b> No se puede instalar - por favor, compruebe que el index.php este en la misma carpeta que SMF');

Code (Line_19) Select

exit('<b>Error:</b> Cannot uninstall - please verify you put this in the same place as SMF\'s index.php.');

exit('<b>Error:</b> No se puede desinstalar - por favor, compruebe que el index.php este en la misma carpeta que SMF');

The Recent Forum Topics Mod has been installed successfully! You will now be taken to the settings page where you can config the mod.

Temas recientes del foro ha sido instalado con éxito! Ahora va a ser llevado a la página de configuración donde se puede configurar la modificación.

I leave both Latin normal as utf-8

Regards!

I think that would be cool to solve the bugs faster. This mod can be something, all the new kids on the block (new forum system) are based on this logic and not on categories.

@Kindred suggestion, a new version of smf needs to have an option of this kind as a default option. It just improves the usability on a forum by a lot and decreases the entry barrier for new users.

Thanks a lot for this!

I'm talking about what this mod does... Basically it allows to replace the boardindex to be a recent topics instead. That I think it should be a SMF default option, not the mod site :p

Egads no! I'm with Kindred. That goes against the whole concept of how a forum should work for those who make the software. If one must have it the way you suggest, then as Kindred said, it should be a mod imo as well.

I most disagree with you guys. We are in a mobile world, what's the point of scrolling through pointless categories (defined by a clever illuminated guy) when you can scroll through content? That's what you were looking for in the first place. New young users won't even understand that concept, are forums dying? Or just not adapting...

You guys are right and everyone else is wrong? :) Think about the new kids on the block, tapatalk, discourse, flarum, nodebb, etc. Not to mention facebooks and twitters and so on.

btw, someone trying to do this on elkarte... pretty cool stuff imho

Speaking as someone who spent considerable time on a 1+ million post forum that was on Discourse and now NodeBB, and find it much harder to navigate to find where to post anything, or where to find anything... if you're a regular and keep up with all the current content, sure, it works great. If you're not - and most forums users are not - they tend to be harder to navigate.

Just because they do it doesn't make it right. You talk about Facebook... try finding a post from 2014 on there. It's all geared to the latest content which if you only care about the latest content, is fine. But plenty of users and plenty of forums are not about the latest, and plenty of them are not about rapid response, where replies can take hours or days, where you can then find your topic long gone if you can't readily find it amongst a category structure.

That's arguable, very. Once again, think about the current reality, with navigation through the updated content + push notifications, it's a breezy to be aware of what is going on. Let's face it, platforms like smf without native apps can't really compete with facebook groups for instance.

And I do think the users that make a community alive are the regulars, always a small percentage of the user base. And we should build interfaces for them. Not the sporadic user that stumble upon your community by searching for something, luckily you can make that new user a regular. But if your community is designed for a 15 years ago reality, you are just making your life as an admin harder. And without new users your community just dies eventually.

I really like what tapatalk is doing. It's way nicer to navigate to that updated list of content and have push notifications to the content you are interested in, than once again the typical and old categories list... It's just not a fair fight and if our old mindset doesn't change nothing good is coming for the future. Just look to smf 2.1, not released yet and it's already outdated by 5 years :(

And don't get me wrong, I love smf and I think it's one of the more stable platforms out there. I just release a major redesign on a big forum. But I just feel that I'm not getting the tools that I need to fight my competition and sadly I don't see that changing.

nope.... it's not arguable...

it is, demonstrably, nearly impossible to find a specific post from a year ago on any of the systems that you mention.
I despise their layout...  I really do.
I utterly despise tapatalk and refuse to use it on any system that I admin.

However... if you must have it, there's a very nice mod, right here, to do it for you.
That's why we have mods in the first place...
that's also why SMF makes it so very easy to install mods that can completely change your functionality.

So no... we will probably never add what you ask as a default feature... but you can still get it, nice and easy, with a simple mod.

Yes it is. The search system as nothing to do with the navigation system. What you have is an opinion. The search engines that this new guys are using are much better than smf's one...

Yep agree, and that's what I'm trying to do. Love smf, not planning to change, would rather pay for the customization that changing platform at this moment at least.

So no... we will probably never add what you ask as a default feature... but you can still get it, nice and easy, with a simple mod.

The fact that you reply with that mindset and you have "project manager" on your badge really scares me as user of this project. What's the problem of trying new things or change things on a project that seems to be not on it's best days. Maybe some change would be nice. Try to be more open minded Kindred, saying "no" just based on your opinion, doesn't make you look good and specially SMF as a project as well.

cheers

and your desire to have those things is also just an opinion.

I don't say no just because I personally dislike them...  I work in UX and hate them for UX reasons as well as person reasons.

I use a responsive theme instead of an app

This is great, how can I try this. I want my homepage with simpleportal to be only recent topics. This would do it I guess

see attachment, pls note the mod is beta, bugs can occur, use at own RISK!! ok i warned you enough i think. good luck and fun with the mod.

Since the attachment is beta I went ahead and pulled it. Please post your attachment in the appropriate channel. In this case it would of been the Customization Development boards.

its there (http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=544481.0) already! I waited for help/contribution and got one respons from a member after 7 months, one single member from this whole community. I was back then finnally approved to post in the customization development board and then no one contributes, why is that board there anyway and why should i go on with this mod? The beta is downloaded 4 times(1 myself)? And now one year later another member posted a request to make it working. I know the mod has lots of bugs, to fix those would take weeks maybe months with testing. At this moment i see no point to give my free time to fix those bugs for 2 members, if more members reply they want this mod working ill maybe continue to fix it.

Not to mention facebooks and twitters and so on.

btw, someone trying to do this on elkarte... pretty cool stuff imho
http://www.elkarte.net/community/index.php?topic=4010.0

just the two cents of someone desperately trying to make this happen for his humble smf forum ;)

I agree with much of what is written here, although I believe that it is possible to have a well balanced system that promotes more interaction without having to go to extremes like tapatalk and others. I've already started it in our forum long time ago, the landing page hasn't changed that much yet, but they can right now see Unread PMs, Mentions and Alerts of Quoted/New Subscribed Posts or Topics the whole time. This gives the forum and its users a new dimension when it comes to interaction (and they've noticed it already). Even the featured topic for the "blog"-like board is meant to put highlight featured content more accessible to users instead of just organizing it, which is in short what we are talking about here.

Other ideas: to put before the categories a list of 5 or 6 topics which are "latest" and another with the "hottest" (meaning more replies in y amount of hours) a bit like nodebb has with the "popular"; get the mentions and PM tab to open a dropdown list like the Alerts do instead of opening in a new page; give search a real boost with more focus and better layout.

P.S.: It's possible to put the latest topics on boardindex using SSI, it has to be worked for you to get exactly the elements you want with the layout you want, but it's possible. ;)

Thanks a lot Pipke for this fantastic Mod, it's just what i wanted and it fits perfectly in my non-default Theme.

But i would like to ask you something which maybe is estupid from my part, but as i'm less than a newbie in coding, i don't know if it's possibe, but i could imagine isn't it.

The first screenshot i've attached below, is how it looks all the forums with a custom icon.

This is the look i had in my old IPB forum, and i would like to get it the same with this SMF v2.0.13 i'm installing.

To the icons look as it shown, i've had to add them into the title field, in this way:

<img src="https://url-to-image.jpg"> Title

As the icons are 48x48 pixels, and the Mod catch all content from title field, the icon shows as well as i have attached in the second screenshot.

My stupid question is if there is a way that the icon don't show close to title in the Recent Topics, i suppose no, but as you guys are masters, maybe know the trick if there is one.

Anyway, i have another question that is not stupid hehe... if it can be shown the avatar of the poster like this Mod does:
http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=4107

As it's your Mod, i can figure it's possible.

Again Thanks for this great Mod and even Thanks in advance for your help.

Another question i got about this Mod is more important, at least for me, i hope to get some help for this.

Now that my forum is growing in messages and after have set topics to display to 10, i see those 10 are to be shown in front page, but it paginates all the last messages in the forum, for what the number of pages could be infinite.

I would like to show only the last 10 messages, no more, no pagination.

Please, i need help with this, Thank you.

Hi Pipke,

I have the same problem as Gryzor here (https://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=522114.msg3806871#msg3806871) and did what you said the post after (https://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=522114.msg3806914#msg3806914).

But then it won't show it when in desktop mode and it looks very weird and ugly.

So what do I need to change that it looks ok on mobile and desktop?

in RecentForumTopics.template.php

Code (find) Select

<th scope="col" class="first_th" width="8%" colspan="2">&nbsp;</th>';

Replace with:
Code (replace by) Select

<th scope="col" class="first_th hidden-xs hidden-sm" width="8%" colspan="2">&nbsp;</th>';

Code (find) Select

<th scope="col" width="15%">', $txt['replies'], ' / ', $txt['views'], '</th>

Code (replace by) Select

<th scope="col" width="15%" class="hidden-xs hidden-sm">', $txt['replies'], ' / ', $txt['views'], '</th>

Code (find) Select

<th scope="col" class="lefttext last_th" width="24%">', $txt['last_post'], '</th>';

Code (replace by) Select

<th scope="col" class="lefttext last_th hidden-xs" width="24%">', $txt['last_post'], '</th>';

SMF 2.0.15 , PHP 7.1.15

It seems that in PHP 7.1, a Warning will be emitted if a non-numeric value is encountered.

Here is the relevant portion that pertains to the Warning notice you are getting:

New E_WARNING and E_NOTICE errors have been introduced when invalid strings are coerced using operators expecting numbers or their assignment equivalents. An E_NOTICE is emitted when the string begins with a numeric value but contains trailing non-numeric characters, and an E_WARNING is emitted when the string does not contain a numeric value.

working on it later, should be easy to fix.

Here's the fix for now:

in Sources/RecentForumTopics.php

Find around line 30
Code (find) Select

if (isset($_REQUEST['start']) && $_REQUEST['start'] > 95)
$_REQUEST['start'] = 95;

Add this code after it:
Code (add after) Select

// Make sure start are numbers.
if (isset($_REQUEST['start']))
{
// Make sure its a string and not something else like an array
$_REQUEST['start'] = (string) $_REQUEST['start'];

// If there's a slash in it, we've got a start value! (old, compatible links.)
if (strpos($_REQUEST['start'], '/') !== false)
list ($_REQUEST['start'], $_REQUEST['start']) = explode('/', $_REQUEST['start']);

// Now make absolutely sure it's a number.
$_REQUEST['start'] = isset($_REQUEST['start']) ? (int) $_REQUEST['start'] : 0;
}
// Well, start is going to be a number no matter what.
else
$_REQUEST['start'] = 0;

I've implemented this mod and it's working fine on my 2.0.15 site. Love the mod. Has a very nicely structured layout with paging for the list of recent topics.

One que (or issue). During our migration (from IPBoard), we did a lot of review/re-formatting of some posts (due to HTML/BBCode compatibility) and those topics are being shown in the list of recent topics (even tho there is no "reply" to those topics since the migration). This resulted in a rather long list of recent topics (13 pages in total).

Is there a way for us to reset the list (flush some cut-off date?) so that this list starts with zero topics (yeah we might lose one or two "real" recent topics, but that's fine for us)? TQ

The recent forum topics are getting renewed(updated) when there are made new topics or replies, you only have to wait for that if it has about 100 new ones, if you have a busy forums that will happen within a week then or so, its better to wait for that instead of implenting a code to query after certain date. just my view on it.

Hi!

IMHO this is one of the greatest SMF mods!
Many thanks for sharing it with us!

Recently one of my moderators has noticed that on some mobile devices the RFT table extends past the right edge of the container. Please, take a look at my screenshot taken from the Chrome DevTools.
I'm using the default SMF template.

Is there anything I can do to fit the table to the main content section?

Is there anything I can do to fit the table to the main content section?

Can you provide a link to your forum, so we can see this behavior in action. At GigaWatt's site this looks all fine.

Yeah, no problem on my forum... though I don't own a smartphone, so I can't confirm.

I recall viewing my forum from my wife's smartphone a few days ago, it seemed fine.

Also, a request directed at Pipke. Could you add a setting to limit the number of pages or recent topics shown (either will do) in the next version? Thanks :).

It's hard to say. I have two web browsers on my phone (Chrome and Opera Beta) and for as long as I can remember the site looks fine.
Two days ago one of my moderators posted a screenshot from his phone. Then I used the built-in Chrome DevTools and saw the same bahaviour. The site still looks good on my phone.

I've just used the Chrome DevTools to check GigaWatt's forum and there is no such problem.

in RecentForumsTopics.php change this as desired

if (isset($_REQUEST['start']) && $_REQUEST['start'] > 95)
$_REQUEST['start'] = 95;

and find all '100' in file, to the desired number of topics, that should do the task.

Yeah, it looks OK with Chrome. But why doesn't it look OK in DevTools?
Take a look at this recording -> http://splawikigrunt.pl/pliki/misc/RFT.avi

I wrote to the moderator and will post the info as soon as he writes back.

Thanks Pipke!
After adding this meta I got the following preview in the DevTools which is, I suppose, even more strange.
I thought it could be related to the custom font DPI (125%) which I set in my Windows, but nothing changed after setting it to the default 100%.
Also, in my desktop Chrome shortcut I have the following target command:
"...\chrome.exe" /high-dpi-support=1 /force-device-scale-factor=1
I launched Chrome without this addition but it didn't change anything either.

The fact is that the GigaWatt's site always looks good in DevTools.

Never mind, let's say it is something mysterious :)
The most important thing is that the site (and the RFT table) looks OK on most mobile devices.

Turned off eval, new error pointed to "RecentForumTopics.english-UTF8.php".  Turned eval back on and removed the file for now. I assume it's used when your forum is in UTF8 format. Will look into it again when I convert to UTF8

Dear Pipke,

First I would like to publicly thank you for your support and availability to change your MOD.
I am already using it on my fórum page but I have some issues and some requests (if possible).

Would like to have a option or eventually remove completely the 2 colluns on the left side of the topic (post).
(https://cld.pt/dl/download/e5e577e4-f24a-49d6-96ee-3b15638599b3/Image1.png)

On the topic would be nice to have date of when was changed.

On mobile version of my fórum luckily, when fórum is loades is justify all to the left....so is not so bad.
But If I zoom out we can see different boards (blocks) sizes.
Your MOD is not adapting to remaining theme.
Anything you can do with this? "Automatic resize" of topic block?

Hello,

New version in use and working. Nice.
Removing the 2 columns on the left helped on the mobile version but still issues :-(

Quote"Try this. NOTE:This apply only for your theme!
Open file /Themes/YOURTHEME/RecentForumTopics.template.php (v1.2)"
I don´t have that file on the specific theme I am using. I have one called "Recent.template.php" but this file doesn´t match with your instructions :-( neither line number and content!
Can I send you the file I have called "Recent.template-php" so you see?.....or because is not your theme is bad?

P.S. On default SMF heme I have the file called "RecentForumTopics.template.php"

This mod template works best with the SMF default theme, for other themes you should ask for support for theme editing in the theme author support topic or to point you in a direction look at the messageindex template how it is build and use these classes and/or icon urls

After MOD installation can you point me where are the files of your MOD?
Would like to change "A BORDO" to "GRUPO".....and will be not waiting for your update :-)

mod language files in your case -> Themes\default\languages\RecentForumTopics.portuguese_pt-utf8.php and RecentForumTopics.portuguese_pt.php

good luck.

mmm, I think I see your issue: it's that the recent block is wider than the rest I guess...

That is caused by the title being too long for the screen and set to nowrap...
Caused by this section in index.css.

table.table_grid thead tr.catbg th
{
white-space: nowrap;
}

the nowrap prevents the long title from wrapping to the next line...
You can take that out to fix it... just make sure you check what is doe to other tables in your theme...

You are correct....my bad.

Exactly the problem like you said.
Before I try your changes do you know where I can change the words on the header that can be the cause of width?
I believe I can write in other way, meaning the same, but shorter...

It uses these text strings that are in your language file...
The rtf_ strings are in RecentForumTopics.xxx.php

$txt['rft_name']
$txt['rft_to']
$txt['started_by']
$txt['rft_in_Board']

But that will changes the strings also on desktop view. I personally would suppress the started by and in Board strings on mobile.
In your theme you can do that by updating the file RecentForumTopics.template.php

Find

echo'<th scope="col" class="lefttext ',$class,'" >', $txt['rft_name'], ' <span style="color: #'.$modSettings['rft_color_viewnumbers'].';">&laquo; ', $counter = $_REQUEST['start'] + 1 ,' '.$txt['rft_to'].' ', $sum['counter'], ' &raquo;</span> / ', $txt['started_by'], ' / ', $txt['rft_in_Board'], '</th>';
}

and change that to:

echo'<th scope="col" class="lefttext ',$class,'" >', $txt['rft_name'], ' <span style="color: #'.$modSettings['rft_color_viewnumbers'].';">&laquo; ', $counter = $_REQUEST['start'] + 1 ,' '.$txt['rft_to'].' ', $sum['counter'], ' &raquo;</span><span class="phoneNone"> / ', $txt['started_by'], ' / ', $txt['rft_in_Board'], '</span></th>';
}

Thanks for your reply.
Top of recent topic, on my case has this in Portuguese:
QuoteTÓPICOS RECENTES NO FÓRUM « 1 A 10 » / INICIADO POR / NO GRUPO
I changed it to:
QuoteTÓPICOS RECENTES  « 1 A 10 » / INICIADO POR / GRUPO
Meaning is the same and I "bypass" width issue.
Now is okay for me also on mobile version.

Thanks for those who help me...

Best regards

As always, thank you very much for the mod, Pipke!

Let me report two issues I noticed after installing the latest version.

1.
The W3C validator shows errors related to the last column of the table. The number of errors matches the number of last topics in the table.
end tag for element "span" which is not open
...u=3556">Shreku82</a> <br /> on <strong>Today</strong> at 06:54</span>

2.
My TapaTalk plugin (https://www.tapatalk.com/download_SimpleMachines) stopped working. Users of the TT plugin report the following error:
Server error occurred: Cannot redeclare rft_mainbasic() (previously declared in /home/admin/domains/splawikigrunt.pl/public_html/forum/mobiquo/env_setting.php(55) : eval()d code:1) (RecentForumTopics.php:26)

Thank you for your support!

Frankly, I hate TT. This plugin always caused some problems. I only kept it installed because of my users' requests.

As for the HTML errors, I found two more which may also be related to the RFT mod.

document type does not allow element "div" here
<div class="pagesection">

end tag for element "li" which is not open

Hi, I uninstalled an old version of this mod and installed the one from the main mod page (1.2).  Everything reported that it installed OK but now there is no settings page under "Modification Settings". So no way to enable it ? Forum is a stock curve theme with almost no mods (only resize pics mod).

Any suggestions?

EDIT: I have abandoned the 1.2 version and installed the Extended version linked earlier. It seems to be a lot nicer but it's a little broken on mobile. This is on a standard install, curve theme with responsive mod.

Any tweaks I can do to make it look better on mobile?
