Title: checking IP's in admin panel, questions.
Post by: Nodaz on December 29, 2014, 12:57:12 PM
after a rash of spammers a few weeks ago i set my forum to require my approval for membership, then updated to 2.0.9
Ive disabled captcha but have 4 very specific questions that must be answered correctly to join.
Im getting a "normal" number of signups, still requiring approval.
i always check the IP which brings me to this screen;

AfriNIC (Africa)
APNIC (Asia Pacific region)
ARIN (North America, a portion of the Caribbean and sub-Saharan Africa)
LACNIC (Latin American and Caribbean region)
RIPE (Europe, the Middle East and parts of Africa and Asia)

I'm just not sure what I'm looking at or for.

sometimes one of those is bolded so i click on it and it takes me to a page , where i just look for the country of origin.  I'm very careful about anything from .ru or Ukraine Belarus...

But sometime non of the tracers are highlighted, what should i do then, click on on till information appears?

anything i should know of look for  when checking IPs?

Well, those links are the different registries that look after IP addresses. The ones in bold are what SMF thinks is the best match for the IP address given as a guide, but any of them may be able to help.

Any doubt about some ip, I do a search for any results from Stopforumspam, botscout, cleantalk etc (using Firefox right click on the ip > Search Google for)

It'll show up as a rat in the search results if it is a rat (unless the rare occurrences when one's forum is among the very early hits from the ratbot, it's ip not yet being registered by the databases \ Google). & use Google, as Bling & Bohoo are useless for such work.

Nodaz did any of the above help or answer your question?

I have marked this as solved as you have not bumped this in over 2 weeks
