Title: Converting PhpBB3 forum to SMF and Installing SMF in CPanel
Post by: immigrants.ie on March 27, 2015, 07:19:18 AM
I have a forum in PhpBB3 and I would like to convert it in to SMF. I have no PHP skills.

1. There is no SMF in the Cpanel site software. Only PhpBB3 is there.Should I ask the hosting company to do this for me or what are the steps to install SMF to Cpanel  myself?

2. I have seen a doc regarding the conversion of PhhpBB3 to SMF smf_2-0_phpbb3_converter, where would i run this php code. on my local computer or on the server itself? If it is on the local machine what software do I need for this?

3. In an SMF forum are there tags allowed by default when a thread is started or is it an optional extension / addon?

Hi and welcome to sm.org ;)

We have some documentation for you to easily understand how to install SMF. We usually don't recommend that you use your host's installer because they are usually not using our latest release.
http://wiki.simplemachines.org/smf/Installing
http://wiki.simplemachines.org/smf/A_friendly_guide_to_installing_SMF

Conversion is handled by a set of converters that we have available. Some documentation for converters:
http://wiki.simplemachines.org/smf/Converting
(this step usually requires some support from our side)

About the tags, not sure if I understand what you meant. Do you have any external application that creates posts in your forum?

By Tags , I meant if I start a thread related to operating system, I could add keywords like "Windows 7", "Microsoft", "Ubuntu" etc, so that if any one search for "Ubuntu" it would be easily available in the search or listed in the tag cloud.

There are some "tag" MODs, you need to choose what's more adequate to you ;)
http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=579
http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=4034 (this has no "cloud" or search, IIRC)

I have a similar question. I have been using PHPbb3.3 but want to move to SMF. I feel like PHPbb is dying slowly so that's why i don't want my gaming forum to look old or outdated. Is there any guide to migrate from 3.3 to SMF? Also, i need to use the same provider for SMF that I was using for hosting PHPbb (this one: cloudways.com/en/phpbb-hosting.php ). They don't provide root access to their users. Can I install SMF on their server without root access?

Try the phpBB 3.2 convertor from the site here. If you run into any issues let me know and I can work on the 3.3 version
