I think smf should implement a native favorites feature. Essentially, if you favorite a topic, it goes into a separate bin of favorited topics.

is there? I wasn't aware :P While every feature has its own use, I'm not sure this will get popular enough to be included inside SMF 2.1 (estimation under 1%).

It is not nearly popular or requested enough to be a feature... Even on sites where I have implemented it, users rarely use it.
So... No, I see no future for this as a feature, it belongs, as it is, a mod... :laugh:
Also, in 2.1 you can subscribe to topics without getting any notifications for them, which serves a similar purpose.

But can you see them listed on a separate page?

The idea behind SMF is simplicity. The core software should be minimal, while allowing to easily add applications. The more "default" features it has, the more bloated the core software becomes, and the less simple it is overall :)

Very true, we constantly want the software to do more than it was designed to do.
I'm not saying it shouldn't be something to consider, but rather we need to ask how many people would actually use such a feature. If that number is a significant percentage, then it most definitely would be something to consider adding by default.
The best way to look at it is this: the less code there is in the core package, the less time it takes for development cycles, and the easier it becomes to fix bugs and optimize code :)
I remember I started using the bookmarking feature once the number of topics increased and my involvement increased in the community. A lot newcomers who aren't dedicated to the community might never use it.

Precisely. Don't get me wrong, it's a great feature. But it definitely belongs better as an addon than a core feature :)
I heavily use the "Show new replies to your posts" link at the top of the page.
If I'm interested in a topic, I usually contribute. Fully automated, no need to bookmark. Works in 2.0.

I understand your reasoning, but it's not the same. For example, you might reply to it last, and it might get lost if no one else replies.
