Title: Copyright Issue
Post by: dieselv2 on August 19, 2015, 06:54:34 PM
I have done quite a few edits on board index template but now copyright won't show on board index.  It shows on every other page.  I downloaded a new boardindex.template file but there's no sign of copyright in there.  Index.template shows the copyright...#confused

Not sure why we don't help putting the copyright back in for cases like this.

Amen to that Steve!!

dieselv2 I think you might have taken out a little more than the stats part by mistake :). There should be a call for it that you can remove... it should be "template_info_center();" Removing it will stop the stats thing on the bottom, unless you're trying to remove a specific part of that or something else? Maybe post your code here, check your error log too, it's probably something really simple we can solve. :)

Yea, it just doesn't make sense to not help someone who accidentally removes the copyright then wants to put it back as it should be.

sometimes depending on how the copyright went missing or was removed we basically give instructions on how to remove it. we dont want to end up doing that.

Ah, I see what you mean now. By telling them how to put it back, you've told everyone else how to remove it!

I am 100% certain it's now okay to remove the copyright so I am not seeing the fuss here. I'll still help dieselv2 get his theme working right, he's obviously removed it by mistake and fixing his file for him would be helpful to both sides :).

does not mean we want to have users remove their copyright.

Not if you want to get any support at all here...
You can remove the copyright, and thus the credit towards all the hard working people and not help spread the word, but that means you won't get support here. (At least not from the staff, and a large part of the helpers/friends honor that policy.)
Obviously, we're not going to help people remove it... Why would we do that? :)
Just saying: it's a bad idea to remove the copyright on purpose, if you want to get help here. ;)

Of course you can help someone restore it, whether they removed it by mistake or want to make amends for removing it and add it back in there... Adding it back is always good, so no problem with that at all. Just explaining what "the fuss" is about with not posting instructions on how to remove/add it back. :)

Oh don't take me wrong when it was announced my choice was to change the wording, I never removed it. I wanted the credit to be there! I just removed the version number and made it flow in a sentence better.

I just thought that the support side was at each persons discretion now, so if you didn't want to help with it fine but if you did then fine too. Personally I'd rather it be kept there.

What I'm mostly worried about here is that he's stopped it working by removing something completely unrelated, so I am hoping I can help him fix that and not cause other problems for himself. He didn't like that it wasn't showing either and came to us so I can only assume he wants to fix it and his request is genuine. If I can't explain how to fix I'd at least like the opportunity to look at the code and repair it then hand it back :).

Also re "the fuss": He didn't remove or touch the copyright at all, he touched the boardindex file, so this isn't actually a copyright issue?

I didn't know we could.  As edited further up, this has been fixed. :) I downloaded a fresh copy of SMF and deleted line by line to find it so it's all good :)

I will keep the copyright there just so people know SMF is there.  It's free advertising and gets more eyes on the product so there is more development :)

Not to mention, as CoreISP said, being able to get support here. :)
