Title: Admin approval of new members issue
Post by: EL34 on December 01, 2015, 02:57:14 PM
Hi All,
This is really weird and just started happening recently

I have the registration set up as admin approval and it has always been that way going back many years and versions of SMF

Normally I get an email from the forum,
Before this member can begin posting they must first have their account approved
I click on the link and go look at the member(s) awaiting approval

The last few days, I click on the email link to go look at the members awaiting approval and they have already been approved
There is no one in the list
I go to the members list and sort by newest first and there is the member that was supposed to be waiting for my approval

The only thing I can think of that has changed is I set myself up another admin account a few days ago just to have as backup in case something happened to my main admin account
I am the only admin, ( except for my other admin account), so no one else could approve the registrations

I have the Stop Spammers mod installed and HttpBL and that's about it

Scratching my head on this one
Any help is appreciated

Are you sure that is all the mods?

Do you have tapatalk or oneall or some other social media linkage mod?

also, look in the admin logs...
index.php?action=admin;area=logs;sa=adminlog

Try registering as new member, see if account comes up activated before you as admin approve it.

No social media mods
There's a couple more mods shown in my screen shot below and the admin log screen shot also
Note that all mods have been installed for a very long time
Nothing new has been added recently

I'll give that a try

Note that I just demoted my other admin account to global moderator just in case that was causing some sort of problem

you are running 2.0.7? you should upgrade ASAP to 2.0.11 for security fixes.

Ok, I registered as a test and it worked fine this time

I should go back and change my other admin account back to admin
i set it to global moderator just a few minutes ago before this test

Sorry, I did not post the version because it is listed in my signature
2.0.11 is my version

Ok, I set my other user name back to admin and did another test register

The registration process is working fine

It's really strange, but if it happens again I'll report back
Thanks for the help all

Change passwords on both your admin accounts.

Just curious why?

I have extremely secure passwords that I don't even know  :)

I have to use a password manager to login

This would be an example of one

Just a precaution.  If you receive an approval email, the new account must be pending activation.  If it's already activated when you get there, someone must have activated it.  If not you, then there may be a compromised admin account.

yeah, I guess it can't hurt to change my password and change my other account back to global moderator
