Title: parallel versions

Does it make sense to install 2.1 an attach it to the same database as the production version of 2.0.x, or is that asking for trouble? (I think I know the answer but, it doesn't hurt to ask.)

there are database changes in SMF 2.1, an SMF 2.0 database will not work with SMF 2.1 files.
