Title: Trouble Changing Domain Names
Post by: stephenbrennan on September 19, 2017, 07:47:13 PM
I installed SMF into a subdirectory of my primary domain a few weeks ago, with the intention of assigning a domain name to it when it was ready.

Earlier this afternoon I assigned the domain badmanfusion.com to it, through GoDaddy. I know the reassignment worked, because I can browse to specific forum files through that address. But the forum as a whole won't load. If I change the URL under the admin control panel, the forum immediately breaks and then I can't access it at all.

I've found other threads about this, and uploaded repair_settings.php to try and change all the paths. But I'm obviously still missing a step somewhere. I've tried changing all the URLs to badmanfusion.com (plus whatever directory path). I've tried leaving most of them alone and only changing the main URL. And I've tried clearing my temp files afterward to make sure that wasn't the issue.

Repair_settings.php is only helpful to a point. It pretty much just tells me to put all the URLs back the way they were. Which does unbreak the forum, but it gets me no closer to changing the domain name. Any thoughts?

what version of SMF are you running?

if you have the new domain setup, you go to that domain/repair_settings.php and it will prompt you for all the URLs with the new domain.

do you have the new domain set to that folder on your server? if not then this will not work at all.

I just figured out what I was doing wrong. I set up the domain name as "forwarded with masking" when I should have set it up under my hosting control panel (GoDaddy can be confusing sometimes). Once I made that change and waited for it to be set up, I used repair_settings again, and this time it showed me what all the correct URLs should be. 30 seconds and done. Everything's working great now.

Thanks for the help!
