For upgrade packages you do not install via the package manager.
In your case you should install each minor update version though the package major. There should be a link to download.

But I can't do that, i.e. I can't just do one patch at a time. That's the problem as described below. Well, to be clear: yes, I can do what you said with this test forum. However, I cannot do that with my live "production" forum, because of the issue here:
https://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=554407.msg3930869#msg3930869
So then I tried the Fresh Files approach, but it hosed my forum and I had to restore from backup:
https://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=555886.msg3940011#msg3940011
On that thread, Arantor explained that I had used the wrong download to do it and, if I understood right, should have used the Upgrade file. So that's why I am trying that out on a test forum first. Here is what he wrote:
Arantor: "You're not supposed to upload the install package, but the upgrade package, as the upgrade package doesn't override
your Settings.php file.Restore what you backed up, then upload the upgrade package."
"OK, there are three types of packages you can get. There is the install package, the large upgrade package and the mod package.
You grabbed the install package, which assumes you're doing a fresh install. Except you already had an install and didn't need
to install a new one.
That leaves the mod packages which are just installed as mods to get you from version to version, e.g. 2.0.8 to 2.0.9, you
get these from https://custom.simplemachines.org/upgrades/ - but
this isn't the full set of fresh files."
That leaves the large upgrade - which you get from https://download.simplemachines.org/ - and
going to 2.0.14 from 2.0.8 is perfectly fine."
So here is my goal:
Get my stuck live production forum - stuck at 2.0.8 apparently - to 2.0.14 or maybe 2.0.13 and I also want to add the Responsive Curve theme. The only mod I have installed on the live production forum is the Ad Management module.
Unzip the upgrade packagethen upload all the contents of that unzipped folder to your forum via ftp

That's what I was wondering! Thx - will try it.
