Title: Push Notifications
Post by: Study Force on May 07, 2018, 01:18:50 PM
I think SMF badly needs something like this:

https://xenforo.com/community/resources/xen-pushover-push-notifications.3039/

Where you get browser alerts whenever someone comments, quotes you, or starts a topic in a board you're following.

How come SMF developers are not all over this? I'm thinking @SMFhacks, @dougiefresh, @Nigabo, etc.

Moving forward, this is the future. I'd pay for a complete product any day...

Well it looks like you have to get third party involved app will users really download app just for notifications? I don't like building a product around another person's tech since at any time it may disappear.

it is not just any app, most of the time your normal internet browser supports this by default.

Link broken.

The developer would be responsible for developing the back end stuff build around SMF, such as the interface. When someone creates a post, this would trigger the 3rd party service. That being said, the load is being placed on the 3rd party service, not your server, and that's the benefit of it. When you accept push notifications, the browser stores a cookie, information isn't stored into the website's database.

i believe that SMF 2.1 already has this feature.

What are the things it notifies?

We try not to depend on anything involving third parties, with the exception of PayPal, it is unlikely that we willimplement anything as a core feature which requires a third party interface

no idea which ones, but the admin panel help text says this

Quote
This option allows your members to receive AJAX notifications. This means that members don't need to refresh the page to get new notifications.
DO NOTE: This option might cause a severe load at your server with many users online.

so i assume that if you have your notification setting set for alert, it will alert you this way as well.

As a note -- you only get notified when then forum is open, in a browser window.

What Study Force seems to be asking for is a push notification across the internet whether you are viewing the forum or not....   and the answer to that would be no. See my previous statement regarding third parties
