Title: error message: Unable to load the 'global_hf_above' template.
Post by: PenelopeQ on July 13, 2018, 11:29:03 PM
I was trying to install a mod--ad management--and it listed two errors along with the edit instructions to remedy the problem. It said to edit the messageindex.template.php file. I downloaded the file and made the changes. I saved the original file by making it .bak instead of .php and uploaded the edited version. The install failed again and so I simply switched back to the original file.
But now my site is down with this error message: Unable to load the 'global_hf_above' template.

This surprised me since I went right back to the original document.

Don't see a package backup for this mod, last one is 6-25-18.  Did package manager complete the install?  Do you have a recent backup of forum files?

No it did not complete the install.

I don't think so...but after trying other things I cannot recall exactly what happened.

The first time, when it errored, I made sure not to force the install.

Looks like you've broken the global headers and footers mod.  Try uninstalling/reinstalling it, but don't proceed if package manager gives you errors.  I have a forum backup from March.

Oops, that wasn't very helpful if you can't login. :P  Do you have admin access?

Last package backup is from 6-25-18 - /Packages/backups/2018-06-25_before_antispam_cleantalk_smf-2.tar.gz.  You can d/l, unzip, u/l and it will return forum to before that mod install.

I have a backup from that same date in  June--25th.

The error is global across the entire forum, so I can only access things through cpanel--so I cannot go into my forum package manager and uninstall.

What do I need to do to unistall it using cpanel?

You can't.  Upload the backup, it will clean up the files and you won't lose content, database won't be affected.

I uploaded/restored the backup.

No change/same error.

But maybe I restored it wrong...I have never had to do that before and it was super easy. I went to the backup section in cpanel and then selected the restore option and then uploaded my backup.
Or maybe I did something wrong when I backed it up originally.

I download and save all my backups as tar.gz --though I have no idea what that means.

Hang on, I'll take a look .......

Nothing's changed.  Ok if I restore the 6-25 package backup?

Those backups are incomplete.  What backup do you have and how did you make it?

In cpanel I went into backup (not the wizard) and selected Download a full website backup.

Sometimes I also got to my file manager and make a copy of the mlcforum folder.

I always delete these from cpanel after downloading because I am always just that close to being over my disk usage.

A couple of the kids just woke and need me, so I will check in the morning--once I get the kids occupied!

Ok, going offline shortly, be back on tomorrow around 1600EDT.  I know you won't like it, but I'm going to recommend another clean install.  You're not logging a lot of forum errors, but you have a large server errorlog, and there appear to be several things broken.  Clean install will be best way to go.

I hate leaving anything hanging. >:(  Manually removed global h&f mod, got you up and running.  Will take a closer look tomorrow.   Check everything, see if anything's not right.

First thing you should have tried at this point, at the second install try, is to ignore the error on the file you modified manually.
Of course it will fail, if the edits are already there. So did you check if the forum actually worked at that point?

Lex,

I went back to the original messageindex.template file at that point and so the edits were not there. When I tried the install just before that--with the edits, I just can't specifically recall the error anymore. Something didn't work. I usually record this stuff and remember well, but a couple kids were waking during all this and so I was distracted.

Sir Osis did get it back up for the tie being and I think I'll need to do the clean install he recommends--and that he knows I dread :P! But I will wait until he is back to review things--and I probably won't have time until then anyway or until the kids are in bed again. Now I'm able to check in for brief moments between sibling arguments and diaper changes.

Sir Osis,

Thanks for everything!

Forum is currently running clean, just a few password errors.  Server log looks ok, most of the recent errors were from global h&f mod, which I removed last night.  I'm concerned that you may still have broken mod code in some files, this has been a chronic source of problems on your forum.  Package manager backups are incomplete, most of the theme directories/files are missing, I had to fudge around that last night.  You have sufficient disk space, don't know what's causing this.   I have no idea what caused the original glitch, you were working with the ad management mod and somehow broke the h&f mod (it's currently uninstalled).

Found what appears to be a full backup of all files and databases from 6-25-18.  The forum db backup is too small, it's an .sql and should be same size as db (1.4 gb), but it's listed as 1.0 gb.  Don't know why that is, but we don't need db dump to fix the forum (this time).  You really should have a host account that does automatic backups, don't see an option for that here.  Your cpanel supports cron jobs, but you don't have sufficient disk capacity to save multiple db backups.

I'll see if I can restore the 6-25 forum files, that should get you back to just before or after you installed cleantalk antispam mod.  Forum may be offline a bit until I'm done.

Um, why? The DB will contain indexes which won't be part of the SQL.

Could that account for 400 mb difference?  The _messages table alone is 1.1 gb.

Check the database to see what indexes are on it, and ideally query how much data is in it vs how much the indexes hold. The structure tab in phpMyAdmin will tell you how much space MySQL is using for data and indexes on a table.

Looks like you're correct, as usual. For _messages table -

Space usage
  Data  719.5 MiB
  Index  381.3 MiB
  Total  1.1 GiB

Backup should be good.  Thx.

Restored 6-25-18 files backup, saved previous install in /forum_bak.  Forum is up & running, error logs clean so far.  Check everything soon as you get a chance.

Reinstalled global h&f and cleantalk mods, both without errors.  Will keep an eye on the logs next couple of days.  If you don't find anything broken, and members don't report any problems, you should be ok to keep the current install.  Would still prefer a clean install, but if it ain't broke, no reason to fix it.
