However - if you don't want a forum -- WHY THE HELL WOULD YOU USE A FORUM SOFTWARE?!

Us the proper tool for the task.
If you want a forum with a file manager/download system - then great...
if you don't want the forum -- then get a file manager web tool, not a forum script forced into being somethiong that its not

If you don't want a forum, why are you trying to turn a forum into a file sharing mod?

That's like trying to turn a blog into a calendar, it's not really going to work. Just get a file sharing script already.

I agree with the two responses above. Most file-sharing modifications built for SMF are built poorly without the functionality you'd want in a file-sharing website. Take, for example, the file sharing mod added to my website (link below), I worked endlessly to modify it as best as I could, but the search functionality is still very limited. I'd find a dedicated file-sharing software if that's your main focus

So, is there a simple script, like SMF is, that is supposed to be like a blog?

PS: I don't like WordPress :P :D.

Whenever I'm looking for free software (and this is how I found SMF 8 years ago), I go to http://demo.softaculous.com/enduser/index.php?act=demos

All the software listed there is free, and you can try a demo before downloading.

Look up "File Management" (all the way at the bottom)!

ProjectSend

Pydio

PHPfileNavigator

eXtplorer

Arfooo

OpenDocMan

Monsta FTP

Forums & filesharing are both important.  I don't think it should be an either/or situation.

In our forum, one of the things we do is share a lot of files (gear patches).  ~4000 patches spread out over ~160,000 posts in ~20,000 topics.

We do use the Download System mod (linked above), but that seems to be better designed for the more stable content, e.g., manuals & instructional materials.  The higher volume patches are a bit harder to sort thru.

It would sure be nice to be able to "browse" our attached patches...

I have provided the ability for our users to browse patches via Excel or via an online table within an SMF post here:
https://www.vguitarforums.com/smf/index.php?topic=24401.0

Not perfect, but it works.  It takes a few seconds to load.  All column headers are filters, e.g., if you type in "jimi" in the column header for post excerpt, you'll see all the Jimi Hendrix patches folks have shared, across all types of gear.

I do think ways to more easily categorize & search & browse patches/attachments is a promising future direction for SMF.  SMF excels at merging discussion & documentation.  Getting at that documentation is, uh, an area of opportunity!
