Title: converting from vanilla 2.5.1 -- not working at all
Post by: brenwa on October 24, 2018, 08:36:11 PM
I am currently using V2.5.1 and smf 2.0.15

its a fairly small forum (less then 1k members)

Im less and less happy with the features offered with V and was trying to install smf and import all my content to give it a try
but so far the simple process is anything but simple

it sounded great but its been one obstacle after another for hours now

first thing the converter offered on this site, didnt work at all...
https://download.simplemachines.org/index.php?converters;id=57
it kept telling me the path to the vanilla install was incorrect (it was correct)
(the info provided on the conversion tool page regarding versions is pretty sad)

after searching for a while I saw a couple of old posts about it having to do with the converter is for vanilla 1 not 2... so I started trying to find a version to work with 2
I came across this
simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=477778.0
leading me to this
github.com/DukeofRealms/Vanilla-2-to-SMF-2
it on the very last post of the refrence solution it has mention of it having an error when trying it, and I had the same error and determined it was solved by adding the database user from the smf install as a user on my vanilla form with full priv.
simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=454953.0

and that at least got everything working... or so it appeared

see attached screenshot... it just hangs there forever

eventually I got bored and reloaded the page and it basically told me success and it was updating "Totals and Statistics"

it was not... nothing had changed imported or updated...total fail

heres the thing, I just want to give this a try by importing my board and seeing it its going to be a better fit for me
but I am not too willing to spend days forcing it to work... frankly I have gone down that sort of rabbit hole time suck before and life is too short

so FINALLY onto my question.. is there something obvious Im missing here?
Is there possibly a version mismatch with converters?
is there a different one where Im going to load convert.php into the browser window and puppies will begin to sing?

if so please point me in that direction, this does look like a great bit of software and I think long term it will be the solution I am looking for... the impression Im getting is...hey..this just works...however its not the experience I am having at the moment...any help would be appreciated

thanks in advance :)

PS ... after writing all this to find out I cant add an external link to my references ..... bad bad bad

My guess your site is on https:// which is why the convertor is not loading the css files. Attach your convert.php file

That's an anti-spam/bot measure, you need to have at least 5 posts to do that ;).

thank you for that prompt reply, I have tried it and it hangs at converting members just like the last one... there was no difference
I have no way to know how long it takes but I gave it 10 min at least and then tried it again (only waited a min or 2 this time) to the same result.

You did mention it turned on debug but I have no idea where that information can be found?

thanks again
