Title: Forum suddenly stopped showing image thumbnails
Post by: EL34 on October 28, 2018, 04:04:52 PM
A moderator on my forum just reported this to me
Images are thumbnailing any more
It shows the full sized image only now

I looked at some older post from a week or so ago and they were all thumbnailed properly

I looked at the settings
I have not changed any of the settings in years
I am not sure what is going on?

Here's a screen shot of my settings

I just looked at the attachment folder on my server and it seems to show a bunch of thumb.tmp files right next to a thumb file that has a size of zero
Not sure what the .tmp file is, but I am guessing that it gets converted to the real thumb file and then deleted?

The only thing I can think of is that my Cloud Server host recently had an issue where a program they ran stooped PHP from being able to write to the disk.
That was a simple fix in the PLesk Server control panel and php is able to write to the proper folders

But now I am wondering if there could be some other php setting that got changed?

Sometimes hosts rearrange things...   And what they like to think is "transparent" requires reviewing your settings.

If there are any doubts, I would suggest running repair_settings.php, and comparing all settings to what can be found in your File Manager (or equivalent) utility.

Pay special attention to your URLs *AND* folders for attachments, avatars, and custom avatars.

repair settings results were all correct
As you can see in my screen shot, smf is writing to the attachments folder
Just something is screwed up with the thumbnails

Have you checked file and folder permissions?

yes, as I said above, it is writing to the attachments folder
This is a windows 2016 server

I unchecked the extensive security checks box
Tt's thumbnailing again

Weird how that has been checked for a long time and just now goes wonky

Maybe a security update messed something up ???.

Ok, the forum is doing it again today
Same thing as before
It is not creating thumbnails again, just showing full sized images
My attachment settings on the forum have not changed at all

There were some php issues on the server last night and they were fixed earlier today
But then the thumbnails stopped being created

I have my cloud server host looking into it
They were asking me what the forum software uses to create thumbnail images
I am here to ask you guys that questions so I can give them that info
Thanks

ok, problem solved
It has nothing to do with SMF software
The php issue I had last night affected permissions on my windows cloud server

I noticed that my shopping cart was unable to delete all items in the cart and start fresh also
One of the commands my shopping cart has to do is to unlink a temp file

That got me to thinking that the forum php software also needs to unlink a temp file in order to create the final thumbnail file
We found in Plesk control panel that the permissions were unchecked
Restoring the proper permissions and bang, thumbnails worked and my web store problems were gone

Just leaving a note here that smf bails out on creating a thumbnail file if it cannot follow through and delete the temp file.
