Title: serious problems with search engine
Post by: supernova777 on January 18, 2019, 11:42:39 AM
i need some help
i have some topics that i literally have to delete + repost before they will show up in search
if i search using google it comes up properly first result

if i search with simplemachines.. the page doesnt even come up.. even after switching to + from using an index...
what can i do to ensure that my search engine works properly????

example:

simple machines search doesnt work:
http://www.oldschooldaw.com/forums/index.php?action=search2&search=%22Roland%20JX-8P%22

site search on google works:
https://www.google.ca/search?as_sitesearch=oldschooldaw.com&q=%22Roland%20JX-8P%22

can someone help me to understand how this works + whats goin on here?
why is it that the search engine built into SMF CANNOT find the page? is it because the page is too old?
checking the thread that was searched for ( http://www.oldschooldaw.com/forums/index.php?topic=1390.0 )
reveals that it was posted on October 22nd 2015 - why is it that google can find the page? but the page is invisible to my own built in search engine?????
even after i have recently responded to this same thread as of today, it STILL cannot find the page at all???

this is a serious bug + defect in how the search engine works? wouldnt you agree?

Hello, the main search in Menu will find that post only if  "Search in topic subjects only" is ticked, otherwise indeed no result.

A test: menu > search > weights, increase % in "Relative search weight for a matching subject" and see if it does anything.

there is no option "search topic subject titles only" that i can see
is that supposed to be under "Weights" or "Search Method" or "Settings" ????
or is that under a different section altogether?

the only setting i see under "settings" is:
[] Enable simple search

is this what you mean?

also im seeing this error:
Fulltext index
Index: cannot be created because the max message length is above 65,535 or table type is not MyISAM

the only checkboxes i see under "search method" are:
[] Force the use of a search index
[] Match whole words only

Hello, no "Weights" showing up anywhere?

Wrote menu > search > weights above, it's (of course) admin > search > weights. See attachment.

Search topic subjects only is in the main search form when you do the search itself.

Search topic subjects only is in the main search form when you do the search itself.

thanks for pointing that out..
however that does nothing to help me fix my search engine to work for the people using my site.
as most people search from the box that is embedded on every page, that does not have this option.

is there any way to rig my search to always use this topic-title search??? maybe by adding a variable to a php file or something?

http://www.oldschooldaw.com/forums/index.php?action=search2&search=%22Roland%20JX-8P%22&subject_only=1
ok.. this is working
maybe i just have to add this variable to the textbox form post...
